Roku Error 003 means the software update cannot be downloaded. It describes an update failure, not proof that the Roku device is broken. Work through these six checks in order, starting with temporary service issues and ending with a comparison against another internet connection.
What Roku Error 003 means
Roku’s update troubleshooting page describes Error 003 as “Update cannot be downloaded.” Its Wi-Fi guidance also labels code 003 “Can’t update.” The code identifies a failed update download; it does not, by itself, identify the cause.

Roku lists other update errors separately: 001 means the device cannot reach the update server, 002 indicates an internet connection that is too weak, 004 means the software update failed, and 005 means the connection timed out. Some remedies overlap, but these descriptions are not interchangeable. Roku’s update troubleshooting guide provides the code descriptions.
Six fixes for Roku Error 003, in order
1. Wait briefly, then retry
Update services may be temporarily unavailable. Wait a few minutes and try again; if there is a wider service outage, retry after it is resolved. Roku devices check for updates when turned on and every 24–36 hours, and updates generally install automatically without interrupting use. Roku’s update guidance gives this schedule.

2. Confirm the Wi-Fi network and internet access
- On the Roku, open Settings > Network and check the selected network name.
- If it is wrong, connect to the correct network using its password.
- Using a phone or computer connected to the same router, try opening a website. If that device also has no internet access, address the connection before retrying the Roku update.
If the other device is online but the Roku is not, the Roku may have a weak signal. You can also run Roku’s network test from Settings > Network > Check connection. A red X can indicate that the Roku cannot reach the router or network; a connected network without internet access calls for checking the selected network, restarting devices, or contacting your internet provider. See Roku’s network-connection guidance.
3. Improve the Roku’s Wi-Fi signal
Move the Roku closer to the router, reduce obstacles between them, and avoid placing the device behind the TV if that blocks the signal. These are simple tests if Roku’s network check reports a weak signal. They do not prove that the router is faulty.

Roku’s UK network guidance lists typical streaming requirements of 3 Mbps for SD, 5 Mbps for HD, and 25 Mbps or more for 4K Ultra HD. Those figures concern streaming quality; Roku does not state them as a minimum speed for downloading a software update. See Roku’s connection guidance.

5. Check for the update manually; try Ethernet if available
To check manually, open Home > Settings > System > System update > Check now. If your Roku model has an Ethernet port, a direct wired connection is another way to test whether Wi-Fi is involved. Only some Roku players support Ethernet, so check your specific model before buying a cable. Roku describes wired Ethernet as potentially faster and more reliable for resolving update failures. See Roku’s update guide and Roku’s setup guidance.
6. Compare with another network
Try connecting the Roku to another internet source, such as a mobile hotspot, then check for the update again. If the update works on the hotspot but not on your home connection, Roku says the home internet connection is likely involved. That comparison narrows the problem but does not establish a specific router fault. If the issue continues, contact your internet provider or Roku Support.

What the results can tell you
- Other devices also have no internet: The internet connection needs attention before the Roku update can succeed.
- Other devices work, but the Roku reports a weak signal: Try improving the Roku’s position or removing obstacles.
- Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not: The wireless path is a likely factor.
- A hotspot works but the home network does not: The home internet connection is likely involved; ask your provider for help if the problem persists.
- The error remains across networks: Contact Roku Support rather than assuming the device is damaged.
When to consider a factory reset
A factory reset is not an early Error 003 fix. Roku’s network guidance reserves it for extreme cases after other steps. Since a reset changes the device’s setup, use Roku’s guidance or contact support before taking that step.
