Home Assistant says a post-update problem usually affects one integration, especially a community-maintained one, rather than the whole installation. The right next step depends on whether the integration is built in or custom, and whether it failed to load, became unavailable, or only broke an automation.
First, identify what failed
“Stopped working” can describe different problems, and each points to a different place to investigate:

- Integration does not show up: it may not be installed, may have been removed or renamed, or its setup may have failed.
- Integration failed to set up: look for a configuration, dependency, authentication, or connection error in the logs.
- Entities are unavailable or behaving strangely: the integration may have loaded but lost access to a device or service, or an update may have changed its behavior.
- An automation or action is unavailable: inspect the automation and the integration’s available actions; the integration itself may not be the only issue.
- The Home Assistant interface or many unrelated integrations fail: this is broader than a single integration problem and may require startup or recovery diagnosis.
Before changing anything, note the Home Assistant version before and after the update, the integration name, whether it is built in or custom, the exact error shown in the UI, and when the failure began. An update occurring just before a failure is useful context, but it does not by itself identify the cause.

Read the backward-incompatible changes for the Home Assistant release currently installed. A renamed or removed configuration option or action can make an existing setup invalid. If you upgraded across several releases, review the notes for the intervening versions too; Home Assistant’s OS update guidance recommends checking all release notes between the current and target versions. The relevant notes and instructions depend on your installed release.
If a log names a YAML or configuration problem, address the specific reported issue rather than making unrelated edits. Where applicable, validate the configuration and restart only if the change requires it. Recovery mode can follow YAML syntax errors, missing include files, changed configuration options, or corrupted configuration storage.
Check whether the integration is built in or custom
Built-in integration
Consult the integration’s official documentation and use the log message to narrow down the failure. Home Assistant says dependencies for its official integrations are tested and shipped together. If a built-in integration reports a dependency error during normal operation, report it to Home Assistant with the relevant logs and version details.

Check the integration project’s documentation and issue tracker for compatibility with the Home Assistant version you just installed and for reports with the same error. Community-maintained integrations may need an update before they support a new Home Assistant release, and one custom integration can conflict with another. If the maintainer has published a compatible fix, follow that project’s documented update process.

It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app. Supports advanced Matter bridge functionality, enabling Aqara-exclusive scenes and signals to sync with Matter ecosystems such as Home Assistant for seamless integration. Supports up to 127 Aqara Zigbee devices (** Not third-party Zigbee devices) and 127 Thread devices (Repeaters are needed).
- [Edge Compatibilities and Local Automations] The M3 serves as an Edge Hub, prioritizing local control and automation. Upon integration, it supersedes existing Aqara hubs, shifting the automations among them to local operation (Some cloud-based notifications still require internet). Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
- [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)

The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
- [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.
If no compatible fix is available and the update has made the installation unusable, a known-good pre-update backup may be a temporary rollback option. Restoring it returns the installation to the backup’s state, so consider any changes made since that backup.
Use safe mode to isolate custom components
When the logs do not make the cause clear, safe mode provides a comparison. It starts Home Assistant without custom integrations, custom cards, or themes and remains active until the next restart. If the problem disappears in safe mode, one of those custom components is a lead to investigate; safe mode does not identify which one by itself.
Recovery mode is different. It is intended for fixing a startup-blocking problem and loads only a minimal set of system integrations. User integrations, devices, automations, and scripts are not active, so recovery mode is not a normal way to keep using the installation while troubleshooting.
Collect evidence before asking for help
- Go to Settings > Devices & services, open the affected integration, and use its three-dot menu to enable debug logging.
- Reproduce the problem, noting the steps and the exact error or behavior.
- Return to the integration menu, disable debug logging, and download the resulting log.
- Download integration diagnostics from the same menu if that option is available. Not every integration provides diagnostics.
- When reporting the issue, include the Home Assistant version, integration version if known, exact error, reproduction steps, and whether the behavior changes in safe mode. Remove passwords, tokens, and personal information before sharing logs or diagnostics.
For a built-in integration, report the issue to Home Assistant; for a custom integration, use the project’s issue tracker or support channel. A focused report with the versions and relevant error is more useful than saying only that the integration broke after an update.

Choose between reload, restart, and restore
| Option | Best suited to | Scope and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Reload configuration | A configuration change for an integration that supports reloading | Narrower than a full restart. Most integrations using configuration.yaml can reload configuration, but a restart may still be needed if the change does not take effect. |
| Restart Home Assistant | A change that requires a restart, or a restart after correcting a startup/configuration issue | Broader interruption: automations and scripts stop while Home Assistant restarts. |
| Safe mode | Checking whether custom integrations, cards, or themes are involved | Diagnostic comparison, not a component-specific fix; custom components are unavailable until the next restart out of safe mode. |
| Restore a backup | Rolling back an update that has made the installation unusable when no prompt fix is available | Restores the backup state and can omit changes made afterward. The restore process depends on the installation and backup context. |
Reloading configuration is not a remedy for incompatible integration code. If the integration’s maintainer has fixed compatibility, update it using the documented process. If the update itself leaves the installation unusable and there is no timely fix, Home Assistant’s update FAQ notes that an automatic backup is taken before each update; restoring a suitable pre-update backup is the rollback route. Where practical, back up the current state before risky changes.
When the whole installation will not start
If Home Assistant enters recovery mode or cannot start normally, inspect the logs for the named startup failure and correct that issue before restarting. Recovery mode is useful for repairing a problem that blocks startup, but it does not run user integrations, devices, automations, or scripts normally. A single integration failure with an otherwise healthy interface is a different case: begin with that integration’s Repairs message, logs, compatibility, and connection.
What to expect from a post-update failure
Home Assistant’s update FAQ says that problems after an update usually affect a single integration, particularly a community-maintained one, rather than the entire installation. That is a useful starting point, not a diagnosis: the exact fix depends on the integration, the error, your installed release, and—if it is custom—the maintainer’s compatibility status.
