First confirm your tablet has cellular hardware; a Wi-Fi-only tablet cannot connect to mobile data. If it is a cellular model, check that mobile data is on and its SIM or eSIM and plan are active. Then use the symptoms below to narrow down whether the problem is SIM recognition, coverage, account eligibility, or carrier settings.
Start by checking what kind of tablet you have
Only a cellular-capable tablet can connect to a mobile network. Apple sells iPads in Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi + Cellular versions; Samsung likewise notes that Wi-Fi-only models do not support eSIM. Check the exact model’s specifications or cellular settings before troubleshooting a missing mobile-data option. SIM support can also vary by model and region: a cellular tablet may use a physical SIM, an eSIM, or a configuration specified by its manufacturer.

Turn on mobile data and select the intended line
In the tablet’s cellular or mobile-network settings, turn on Cellular Data or Mobile Data. If the device has multiple plans, make sure the intended line is selected and active. For iPad, Apple advises checking that Cellular Data is enabled and that the SIM is activated and unlocked when cellular service is unavailable. See Apple’s connection instructions.
Check whether the SIM or eSIM is recognized
If you use a physical SIM
If the tablet reports “No SIM” or a similar error, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to power it down before inspecting the card. Check that the SIM is correctly seated and undamaged, then reinsert it without forcing the tray. Samsung notes that SIM-recognition problems can interrupt network connections and that many require help from the carrier. Its SIM troubleshooting guide provides device-specific steps.

If you use an eSIM
Confirm with the carrier that the eSIM plan is installed, activated, and provisioned for this tablet. If it is missing or inactive, changing a mobile-data setting will not activate the line. Apple’s iPad cellular setup guidance explains that some plan transfers and account types require carrier assistance.

Verify coverage, plan eligibility, and account status
Try the connection in an area where your carrier provides service. Ask whether the tablet is eligible for the account and plan, whether the line is active, and whether there is an outage or roaming restriction. A tablet that is unlocked is not necessarily compatible with every carrier: supported network bands, carrier certification, plan eligibility, and roaming rules depend on the exact model, network, and country. Samsung lists plan, access region, settings, and account or network issues among possible causes of connection problems in its mobile-network troubleshooting guidance. Apple also directs users to carriers for certain plan transfers and account situations in its cellular setup guidance.

Check APN settings only with instructions from your carrier
An access point name (APN) defines the network path a device uses for mobile data. Some carriers require particular APN settings, control whether users can view or edit them, or configure them automatically. Ask your carrier what applies to this tablet before changing anything; do not copy values from an unrelated phone, carrier, or country. Apple warns that incorrect APN changes can interrupt mobile data and may cause additional charges. See Apple’s APN settings guidance.
Reset network settings only after the basic checks
For Samsung Galaxy devices, Samsung documents this path: Settings > General management > Reset > Reset network settings. Menu names can differ by model and software version. Samsung warns that a network reset removes saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings, so be ready to reconnect those devices. Use instructions specific to your tablet if its menus differ. Apple’s cited guidance does not establish one universal iPad reset procedure; consult current Apple support for your model before resetting network settings.

When to contact support
Contact the carrier first if activation, plan eligibility, account status, coverage, SIM/eSIM provisioning, roaming, or APN settings are uncertain. Ask the carrier to verify that the line is active and permitted on the tablet. If the carrier confirms service is provisioned but the tablet still cannot recognize a known-good SIM or connect, contact the tablet manufacturer or an authorized repair provider; Samsung recommends seeking service when network connection problems persist.
