How to Troubleshoot a Computer That Crashes After Installing New RAM

A practical sequence for diagnosing crashes after installing RAM, from checking compatibility and reseating modules to testing configurations and interpreting errors.

If your computer started crashing after a RAM upgrade, first return memory settings to stock, check that the modules are supported by the exact computer or motherboard, and reseat them using the manufacturer’s instructions. Then test modules and slots systematically. A memory-test error shows instability, but does not by itself prove that a RAM stick is defective.

Start by identifying the failure and undoing memory tuning

Record what happens: does the computer fail to start, restart, freeze, crash only under load, or show a blue-screen stop code? Note whether the problem began immediately after installation. These details help distinguish a failure to detect memory from instability that appears later.

If the computer can enter BIOS/UEFI safely, restore default settings or disable memory overclocking profiles while diagnosing. AMD recommends returning a system to stock configuration when troubleshooting stability. A high-speed memory profile can make a marginal or unsupported configuration unstable; a lower setting may help isolate the cause, but it does not repair a defective component. See AMD’s stability troubleshooting guidance.

Avoid changing unrelated BIOS settings as a first step. For example, ASUS warns that changing a disk mode after installing an operating system under a different mode can itself cause a blue screen: ASUS troubleshooting for crashes, hangs, and BSOD errors.

Confirm the memory is supported by your exact system

Find the precise model of the computer or motherboard and consult its manufacturer’s documentation. Check the memory generation and type, maximum capacity, supported module arrangement, and the recommended slots for the number of modules you have. The manufacturer’s instructions are model-specific; a module fitting the slot, or working in another computer, does not establish that it is supported in yours.

For a motherboard, check its memory support list. MSI explains how to find the list for the exact board in its memory installation guide. AMD also advises checking that memory is qualified and used according to motherboard guidance in its system stability guidance. A kit missing from a support list is not automatically incompatible; the list is a compatibility resource, not proof that every unlisted kit will fail.

Reseat the modules safely

  1. Shut the computer down and disconnect power as directed by its manufacturer. For a laptop, consult the model’s service manual before opening it; access and retention mechanisms vary.
  2. Use anti-static handling and remove and reinstall the memory in the slots specified by the manufacturer. Do not force a module into place.
  3. Reassemble the computer, reconnect power, and check whether it starts and detects the expected memory. If the problem persists, continue with testing rather than assuming the module is faulty.

A poor connection can cause memory problems. PassMark’s MemTest86 User Guide recommends anti-static handling, reseating modules in their original slots, and retesting.

Test modules and slots one at a time

If the computer has multiple modules, test one at a time only if the platform supports that configuration. Follow the motherboard’s minimum-memory and slot-placement instructions; some systems require a particular slot or module arrangement to start. AMD recommends one-module-at-a-time stability checks in its stability troubleshooting tips.

PUSKILL DDR4 3200MHz CL16 Desktop RAM Kit Heatsink, 32GB (2x16GB)
  • [UNCOMPROMISED 32GB PERFORMANCE] Supercharge your rig with 32GB (two 16GB modules) of high-speed memory. Designed for power users, this kit effortlessly handles heavy 4K video editing, complex 3D rendering, and lets you play AAA games while streaming without a single stutter.
  • [3200MHZ BLAZING FAST SPEED & CL16] Experience ultra-responsive multitasking with speeds up to 3200MHz (PC4-25600) and tight CL16-18-18-42 timings. NOTE: To achieve the advertised 3200MHz speed, you MUST enable the XMP (Intel) or DOCP (AMD) profile in your motherboard's BIOS.
  • [AGGRESSIVE ALUMINUM HEATSINK] Keep your system cool under extreme pressure. The premium aluminum heat spreader efficiently dissipates heat from the memory modules, preventing thermal throttling during marathon gaming sessions while adding a sleek, aggressive look to your build.
  • [MAXIMUM DUAL-CHANNEL POWER] Installing this matched pair activates dual-channel architecture, doubling your memory bandwidth. This dramatically increases frame rates in CPU-intensive games and cuts down rendering times for creators.
  • [BROAD COMPATIBILITY & DIY INSTALL] Engineered to work flawlessly with major Intel and AMD motherboards. Easy push-to-install design for 288-pin desktop slots. (Friendly Reminder: These are Desktop UDIMMs. Not compatible with laptops. Default speed without XMP enabled will be 2133MHz/2400MHz/2666MHz depending on your system).

Keep a simple record of which module and slot you tested and what happened. If individual modules pass but the intended combination fails, the issue may involve mismatched specifications, slot placement, or compatibility in the combined configuration. PassMark notes that multi-module or multi-channel configurations can fail even when modules pass individually; see MemTest86’s troubleshooting guidance.

If the same module fails in supported slots while another passes, that makes a module fault more plausible, but it is not conclusive. A slot, motherboard, CPU memory controller, or another system issue can affect the result too. Change one variable at a time so the outcomes are meaningful.

Run a memory diagnostic—and understand what it can prove

MemTest86 boots from USB and tests system memory. Follow its instructions to create bootable media and start the test; if you do not already have suitable media, you will need a USB flash drive. A reported memory error is evidence of instability, not a component-level verdict: a CPU or motherboard problem, or the memory configuration itself, can also affect the test. PassMark explains these limitations in its memory-error troubleshooting page.

A test that reports no errors does not prove the computer is healthy or explain every crash. If failures continue, use vendor-supported system stability checks and consider professional service rather than ruling out all hardware or software causes based on one test.

Choose the next step from the pattern of results

  • The computer detects memory after reseating: Test the full intended configuration and check that the modules are in the recommended slots.
  • One module passes, but the combined setup fails: Recheck the supported module arrangement, matched specifications, and stock memory settings.
  • Errors continue with a module at supported settings: Contact the memory or system manufacturer about troubleshooting, replacement, or warranty options.
  • Diagnostics crash or failures persist with a known-good supported configuration: The motherboard, CPU, power delivery, or another cause remains possible. Further isolation may require qualified service.
  • You need replacement memory: Match the memory type, capacity, module count, slot arrangement, and supported speed to the exact system. Use the manufacturer’s support information before choosing a kit.

PassMark recommends reseating and retesting before replacement, while AMD advises checking system guidance and component qualification: MemTest86 User Guide and AMD stability troubleshooting.
