Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If your 3D printer stopped working immediately after a firmware update, do not flash a random image or start replacing parts. Recovery depends on the exact printer model, board revision, update method and message on the screen. First record those details, then follow the manufacturer’s procedure for that model. A failed flash can leave valid firmware missing from internal memory, but the supported recovery is often straightforward when the correct files and recovery mode are used.
This guide separates safe checks from model-specific recovery. The Prusa procedures below apply only to the models named; they are examples, not a universal method for every printer. For other manufacturers, use the exact firmware, manual and support article for your model.

1. Identify the printer and the exact failure
Write down the full model name before downloading anything. Two printers sold under one brand can use different firmware packages, and a board revision can require a different file from the same model. Record the board or hardware revision if the screen, label or manual shows one. Also note the firmware version before and after the update, how you performed the update, and what the printer does now.
- Exact printer model and board revision.
- Firmware version that was installed and the version you attempted to install.
- Update method: computer utility, USB drive or another manufacturer-documented method.
- Whether power was interrupted or the printer was restarted during flashing.
- The complete on-screen error, including its number.
- Whether the display is blank, stuck on a logo, repeatedly rebooting, or usable but producing incorrect behavior.
Do not assume that a package for a similar model, a different board or a newer product family is interchangeable. If you cannot identify the board revision, stop at identification and consult the model manual or the manufacturer’s support center.

Use the symptom to choose the first branch
| What you see | What it can indicate | First safe action |
|---|---|---|
| Blank or completely unresponsive display | The update may have failed, or the printer may not be entering its normal boot process. | Do not repeatedly power-cycle it. Confirm the model and look for the manufacturer’s documented recovery mode. |
| Boot logo, then restart or a continuous boot loop | The installed firmware may be incomplete or incompatible with the hardware. | Read the exact model recovery instructions rather than trying a generic image. |
| A named firmware error | The message may identify missing internal firmware, missing removable-media files or an initialization failure. | Copy the wording and number exactly; apply only the remedy documented for that model. |
| The update utility fails on a computer | The procedure, driver, application version, file or printer state may not meet the manufacturer’s requirements. | Check the ordinary update prerequisites before attempting deeper recovery. |
| The printer boots but motion, heaters or menus behave incorrectly | The firmware may not match the machine, or settings may need model-specific treatment. | Stop printing and consult the model’s troubleshooting instructions; do not continue a heating or motion test that appears unsafe. |
2. Check the ordinary update prerequisites first
Manufacturers usually document a normal update path separately from emergency recovery. Start there if the printer still reaches its menus or the computer utility can communicate with it. Prusa’s troubleshooting guidance for the MK2.5S, MK3S+ and MMU families specifically recommends rechecking the procedure, retrying a normal update, confirming current drivers or applications and ensuring that the printer is powered on. Those checks are examples from those families, not a universal checklist.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and hardware revision.
- Compare the downloaded file name and release notes with the model designation. Do not substitute a file for a visually similar printer.
- Read the complete update procedure again, including the required computer software, driver and connection state.
- Install or update the required driver or application if the manufacturer calls for it.
- Make sure the printer is powered on as required by the documented computer-based procedure.
- Repeat the ordinary update once, exactly as written, if the printer remains responsive and the instructions permit a retry.
If the screen now shows a recovery-specific error, stop repeating the ordinary update and use the branch for that error. Repeated attempts with an incorrect file do not make the file compatible.
3. Read the error before choosing recovery
The wording matters. A message about internal flash is different from a message about a USB file, and an initialization error can require a different action again. Error numbers are diagnostic identifiers, not proof that every printer with a similar symptom needs the same fix.
Prusa “No firmware found in the internal flash”
Prusa’s XL and MINI/MINI+ recovery guides identify this condition as firmware missing from internal flash. The company says it can happen when the printer is restarted during the flashing process. The appropriate response is to use the recovery procedure for the named model, not to install a file intended for another printer.

“This can happen if you restart the printer during the firmware flashing process.”
Prusa Research, “Firmware missing #17612 (XL)”
Prusa “firmware file missing in the USB flash”
This message means the printer did not find an uploadable firmware file on the USB drive. Check that the drive contains the correct model’s file in the location and format specified by the model guide. A drive that is detected by the printer is not necessarily carrying a usable file.
Prusa BBF initialization failure
For the documented BBF initialization error, Prusa says to repeat the action or try another USB drive. Use that advice only where the screen and model guide identify the same condition. Do not infer that every USB-related error is a BBF error.

4. Prusa XL recovery example
The XL instructions illustrate how a documented recovery differs from a generic “copy firmware and reboot” recipe. Follow these steps only when you have a Prusa XL and the guide identifies the same missing-firmware condition.
- From Prusa’s official XL support article, obtain the firmware package for the exact XL hardware. The guide may also require a bootloader file; download it only when the guide says it is needed.
- Copy the specified firmware and, if required, bootloader files to a USB drive using the file names and folder layout in the guide. Do not rename files or add unrelated packages unless the instructions explicitly require it.
- Safely unmount or eject the USB drive from the computer before removing it. The XL guide explicitly instructs users to unmount the drive.
- Insert the drive into the printer and restart using the reset button as described by the guide.
- Wait for the documented recovery behavior instead of interrupting the process. Removing the drive or restarting while flashing can recreate the original failure.
- If the procedure does not start, use the alternate sequence described by the XL article: restart with the reset button and press the knob during boot when instructed.
- After the printer boots, confirm the displayed firmware version and complete any model-specific setup or verification before starting a print.
A USB drive by itself cannot repair incompatible firmware or a damaged bootloader. The model, file set, file placement and recovery timing all have to match the XL instructions.
5. Prusa MINI and MINI+ recovery example
The MINI/MINI+ guide also documents recovery from USB and an alternative reset-and-knob start. Use it only for those models.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Download the MINI or MINI+ firmware identified by the official guide for your hardware.
- Place the required file on USB exactly as the guide specifies.
- Eject the drive safely from the computer, insert it into the printer and start the documented recovery process.
- If the normal USB start does not appear, follow the guide’s reset and knob alternative rather than inventing a different button combination.
- Leave the printer undisturbed until the update or recovery completes, then verify the version shown by the printer.
Do not copy the XL package to a MINI/MINI+ drive, even though both procedures use USB media. Their recovery files and boot behavior are model-specific.

6. When a computer-based update fails
If your printer never reached a recovery error and the failure occurred in the computer utility, return to the manufacturer’s normal update article. The useful checks are narrow but important:
- Confirm that the selected firmware is for the exact model and board.
- Verify that the required driver and update application are current.
- Confirm that the printer is powered on in the state required by the procedure.
- Read the procedure from the beginning and repeat it once if the manufacturer recommends a retry.
- Record the point at which the utility fails and any message it reports.
Do not switch to a bootloader image, serial flashing method or downgrade merely because the computer utility stopped. Those actions can make the situation harder to diagnose and are appropriate only when the exact manufacturer documentation calls for them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Check USB media without guessing
When a supported recovery uses USB, the media is part of the procedure, not a universal repair tool. Check three separate things: the drive is accepted by the printer, the file is intended for the exact model and board, and the file is stored in the location and naming convention required by the guide.
Recommended Free Tools
- Use the file supplied by the model’s official support page.
- Follow the documented folder, file-name and capacity requirements; if the page does not specify a change, do not invent one.
- Safely eject or unmount the drive before removing it from the computer.
- Try another USB drive only when the model’s instructions recommend it, such as Prusa’s documented BBF initialization remedy.
- If the printer reports that the firmware file is missing, inspect the drive contents and placement before attempting a different recovery mode.
Formatting a drive, renaming a firmware file, deleting other files or changing partitions may be necessary for some products, but none should be assumed here. Perform those actions only when the manufacturer’s article for your exact model says to do so.

8. If the printer boots but no longer works correctly
A successful boot does not prove that the update is appropriate. If the printer starts but menus, motion, temperature control or other functions behave unexpectedly, stop the job and keep the machine under observation. Note which function changed, the firmware version displayed and whether the problem appears before or after a command.
Return to the model’s release notes and troubleshooting page. Look for a documented compatibility issue, required configuration step or specific recovery path. Do not continue heating or movement tests when the displayed temperature or motion is clearly wrong, and do not assume that a factory reset, calibration or downgrade is safe without model-specific instructions.
9. When to stop and contact support
Escalate when the documented recovery does not start, the printer remains unresponsive, the screen does not match the model article, or you cannot determine the correct board revision. Prusa’s recovery articles direct users with continuing problems to support. Creality’s official support center separates firmware downloads, manuals and after-sales help by model; its resources include an Ender-3 V3 SE example, but that does not establish one recovery sequence for every Creality printer.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Send support a concise record:
- Full model name and board or hardware revision.
- Firmware version before the update, attempted version and source of the file.
- Update method and the step at which it failed.
- Exact error text or a clear photograph of the screen.
- Whether the printer was restarted or lost power during flashing.
- Recovery steps already attempted, including the USB file and drive used.
This prevents support from repeating generic advice and helps them identify whether the issue is firmware, media, a bootloader state or hardware.
10. Actions to avoid
- Do not flash a generic image or a package for a similar model.
- Do not open the printer, remove the control board or connect serial tools unless the manufacturer’s exact procedure instructs you to do so.
- Do not downgrade, alter the bootloader or modify firmware names based on an internet comment.
- Do not repeatedly interrupt a recovery that is visibly progressing.
- Do not treat a USB drive as a cure for incompatible firmware.
- Do not continue printing when heaters, motors or sensor readings behave abnormally after the update.
11. Preventing a repeat failure
Before future updates, save the current firmware version, board revision and the official download location in your maintenance notes. Read the complete model-specific procedure first, prepare the required computer software or USB media, and keep the printer powered as instructed. During flashing, do not press reset, remove the media or restart unless the procedure explicitly tells you to. Keep the exact error wording if anything goes wrong; it is more useful than a description such as “the update broke it.”
The safest recovery is the narrowest one: identify the machine, match the documented files and interface, follow the model’s recovery sequence once, and escalate with a complete record if it fails.
