What “preserving layout and SEO” actually requires
AI can help produce translated copy, but the translation itself does not ensure that the page will retain its design or be indexed correctly. The practical approach is to keep the existing structure—templates, components, styles, and content fields—and replace or localize the text within it. Then validate the rendered result in each target language and implement the URL and language signals Google recommends.

Google says it determines a page’s language from its visible content, not from code-level language information such as a lang attribute or from the URL. As Google Search Central puts it, “Google uses the visible content of your page to determine its language.” That makes it important to translate the page’s meaningful visible content, including navigation, rather than leaving the main text in one language and translating only boilerplate. There is no established universal result for AI translation accuracy, layout retention, or SEO uplift here. Those depend on the translation, content, implementation, and site. Treat AI output as a draft that needs review, and test layout in your actual site rather than assuming a tool will preserve it automatically.

Choose a URL structure for language versions
Give each language version a distinct URL that a crawler can access directly. Google recommends separate URLs rather than changing page language only through cookies or browser settings. Do not make a translated page reachable only after a visitor switches locale inside the original URL.
Common structures include country-code top-level domains, subdomains, and subdirectories. Google describes tradeoffs rather than prescribing one structure for every site:

Translate within the existing page structure
- Inventory the pages and locales. List the pages to translate, the language or country variant for each, and which pages are genuine equivalents. Decide whether a version is a translation into another language or a regional version in the same language.
- Translate visible content fields. Use an AI system to draft translations for the page’s text, including headings, body copy, navigation, button labels, form labels, and other reader-facing language. Keep the source content and translation mapped to the same CMS fields or page components where practical.
- Review the copy in context. Check terminology, tone, names, dates, units, calls to action, and any text whose meaning depends on surrounding content. Do not publish AI output as if it were verified simply because it reads fluently.
- Keep structural elements intact. Avoid replacing the page with a flattened image or a standalone block of translated text. Retain the existing hierarchy, links, components, and styles, while allowing for language-specific content or assets where needed.
- Preview each locale in a browser. Inspect the translated page at desktop and mobile widths. Check text expansion, headings, buttons, menus, forms, images, and text embedded inside images. Longer or shorter translations can affect wrapping and component dimensions even when the CSS is unchanged.
- Publish each version at its own URL. Confirm that each page loads directly and is accessible to crawlers, not only through a visitor’s locale selection or a cookie-dependent switch.
- Add language relationships and switching links. Connect equivalent pages with reciprocal hreflang annotations or include the relevant language or regional mapping in a sitemap. Add visible links so visitors can select another language.
- Review after launch. Recheck the rendered pages and their indexing signals. No particular search-performance improvement follows automatically from translation or from adding hreflang.
Keep the translated pages readable and usable
A page’s visual design can shift when translated text has a different length or writing direction. Layout checks are therefore part of publishing, not a guarantee provided by Google’s SEO documentation. In the browser preview, inspect:
- Headings and paragraphs for awkward line breaks, clipping, or overflow.
- Buttons, navigation, and menus for labels that no longer fit or are difficult to tap.
- Forms for translated labels, validation messages, and clear instructions.
- Images and icons, including text baked into image files that will not change when page text is translated.
- Mobile breakpoints as well as desktop views, since a layout that looks fine at one width may break at another.
Use your existing CMS or page-building workflow to update the content in place, then fix actual display problems in the relevant content or styles. A browser preview is especially important for languages whose text length or writing direction differs from the original.
Set up hreflang, language switching, and canonicalization
Use hreflang for equivalent language or regional pages
Hreflang helps Google associate equivalent language or regional versions. Make the relationships reciprocal among the relevant pages, or provide the mapping through a sitemap. Ensure the URLs you identify are accessible to crawlers. Google documents both hreflang and sitemap approaches in its multilingual-site guidance.
Let visitors choose rather than forcing a language redirect
Provide visible links to other language versions. Avoid automatically redirecting visitors based only on an inferred language, such as browser settings or presumed location: forced routing can frustrate users and can make it harder for search engines to discover all versions. A visitor should be able to reach the intended language page directly.

A translated page has content in a different language. A regional variant may have substantially similar content in the same language—for example, versions adapted for different English-speaking markets. For overlapping same-language regional pages, choose the preferred canonical URL and use hreflang to help Google understand the regional alternatives. Canonical declarations are hints, not commands; Google makes the final canonical selection. See Google’s explanation of URL canonicalization.
Do not treat canonicalization as a replacement for publishing distinct language URLs or for providing language relationships. Google’s guidance distinguishes different-language pages from same-language regional variants.

Check the result after publishing
Open each locale URL directly and confirm that the visible content is in the intended language, the page renders at the screen sizes your visitors use, and the language links lead to the corresponding versions. Review the language relationships in your implementation or sitemap and check indexing signals after launch. Google’s documentation explains the relevant site-structure and canonicalization signals, but it does not promise that translated pages will be indexed or rank, or that a particular implementation will improve traffic.

Common problems and fixes
A translated page still appears in the original language in search
Check the page’s visible content first. Google uses visible content to determine language, so translating only navigation or boilerplate while leaving the main content unchanged may not make the page read as a coherent translation. Also confirm that the translated URL is directly accessible to crawlers and connected to its equivalent pages through hreflang or a sitemap.

Search engines or visitors cannot reach every version
Check whether the site relies on a cookie, browser setting, or forced locale redirect to switch content at one URL. Publish distinct URLs for the language versions, make them directly accessible, and add visible language links rather than relying on automatic routing.
Text overflows or controls no longer fit
Inspect the page in the target language at both mobile and desktop widths. Review expanded labels, headings, buttons, menus, and form fields; adjust the content or implementation where the preview shows a real fit problem. Do not assume that retaining the original CSS guarantees identical rendering.

For substantially similar pages in the same language, review which URL should be preferred and whether the regional hreflang relationships are correct. Canonical declarations are hints, so Google may choose a different canonical URL.

If text in an image is part of what visitors need to understand, it needs a language-appropriate treatment too. A normal page-text translation will not change words embedded in the image file.
