In GIMP, image transformations are under Tools → Transform Tools. Choose a dedicated tool such as Crop, Rotate, Scale, Perspective or Flip for a single change, or use Unified Transform to combine rotation, scaling, shearing and perspective adjustments. Before you act, check the tool’s target setting: a transformation can affect a layer, selection, path or every layer.
Choose the right transformation tool
Open Tools → Transform Tools and select the operation you need. Dedicated tools make one-off changes explicit; Unified Transform is useful when you want to make several geometric adjustments in one canvas operation.

GIMP also includes Shear, 3D Transform, Handle Transform, Cage Transform and Warp Transform for other kinds of geometric changes. Their controls differ, so use the dedicated tool when its operation matches the result you want.

Set what the transformation will affect
Before dragging handles or confirming a change, review Tool Options and the transform target. The target mode persists when you switch transform tools, so a setting left over from a previous operation can produce an unexpected result.

- Layer: transforms the active layer. If that layer has no selection, the whole layer is affected.
- Selection: transforms the selection, or the whole layer when there is no selection.
- Path: targets the active path.
- Image: applies the transformation to all layers.
If the wrong portion of a composition moves—or several layers move when you intended to edit one—check this target first.
Use Unified Transform for combined adjustments
- Choose Tools → Transform Tools → Unified Transform, or press Shift+T in the GIMP 3.2 manual’s shortcut reference.
- Click the image element you want to transform. Confirm that the target mode is correct before proceeding.
- Drag the relevant handles: square handles scale, diamond handles shear, and perspective handles adjust perspective. Use the pivot control if you need to move the point around which the transformation operates.
- Inspect the preview. Apply the change only when the result is right; otherwise adjust the handles before committing.
Unified Transform is convenient for combining operations. For a single, easily described task—such as rotating or flipping—its dedicated tool can be simpler to operate.

Keep scaling, rotation and perspective adjustments controlled
- Scaling: use the aspect-ratio constraint when you need to prevent the image element from becoming stretched or compressed.
- Rotation: use the angle constraint to rotate in 15-degree steps when a freehand angle is not needed.
- Perspective and shear: constrain handles when precision matters, and judge the preview rather than relying on an unconstrained drag.
These controls help make a transformation deliberate, but the appropriate setting depends on the image and intended result.

Choose interpolation for the image and task
When a transformation resamples pixels, inspect the Interpolation option in Tool Options. Interpolation affects processing speed and the appearance of the result; no single choice is best for every image and operation.

- None (nearest-neighbor): can produce a stair-step appearance, which may be acceptable when preserving hard pixel edges matters.
- Linear: averages nearby pixels and produces a different appearance from nearest-neighbor interpolation.
Compare the preview at a useful zoom level and choose the option that suits the image. If the transformed result looks unexpectedly jagged or soft, revisit interpolation and compare alternatives before applying the operation.
