How to Transfer Your Octopath Traveler Save to Nintendo Switch 2

You can move your original Octopath Traveler save to Switch 2, but you must launch the original Switch software to continue it. The separate Switch 2 edition is incompatible with that save.

You can transfer an Octopath Traveler save from the original Nintendo Switch to a Nintendo Switch 2, but you cannot use that save in the separate Nintendo Switch 2 edition. To continue your existing game, transfer the save and launch the original Nintendo Switch software on Switch 2.

Choose a transfer method

Method When to use it What it does Requirements or trade-offs
System Transfer While setting up Switch 2 for the first time Moves save data and other supported data and settings from the old console. Follow the on-screen setup instructions. Nintendo also describes a server-based method for people who do not yet have Switch 2; it has limitations and may initialize the sending console, so read the prompts carefully.
Save Data Transfer After Switch 2 setup is complete Moves an individual save between nearby consoles. Both consoles need internet access and current system software, and the user on each console must be linked to the same Nintendo Account. The save is deleted from the source console after transfer.
Save Data Cloud When the save is backed up and you prefer to download it rather than transfer directly between consoles Downloads a supported cloud backup to a console. The original game is listed by Nintendo Australia as supporting Save Data Cloud. Nintendo Switch Online membership is required; confirm support and availability for your region before relying on this method.

Transfer the save during initial Switch 2 setup

  1. Keep your original Switch available and follow the System Transfer instructions shown during the initial setup of Switch 2.
  2. Complete the transfer as directed on both consoles, including any account or connection prompts.
  3. After the transfer, start the original Nintendo Switch version of Octopath Traveler on Switch 2 and check that your save is available.

Nintendo also offers a server-based System Transfer route for people who do not yet have the destination console. Its limitations can include initializing the sending console; read Nintendo’s current instructions and on-screen warnings before choosing it.

Transfer an individual save after setup

  1. On the original Switch, open Nintendo’s Save Data Transfer function and choose the option to send save data to another console.
  2. On Switch 2, open the corresponding receive option.
  3. Connect the consoles as prompted and select the user and Octopath Traveler save to transfer.
  4. When the transfer finishes, launch the original Switch software on Switch 2.

This is a move rather than a copy: the transferred save is removed from the original Switch. Both consoles need internet access and current system software, and the user on each must be linked to the same Nintendo Account.

Use Save Data Cloud

Nintendo Australia’s eShop listing for the original Octopath Traveler marks Save Data Cloud as supported. Nintendo’s general guidance says saves for Switch games compatible with Switch 2 can be backed up and downloaded on either system. Cloud saves require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Check the game’s Save Data Cloud menu or your region’s eShop listing to confirm the feature is available for your copy before depending on it.

Why the save will not load in the Switch 2 edition

Moving a save onto the Switch 2 console does not convert it to the separate Switch 2 edition. Nintendo’s Australia eShop listing for the original game states: “Save data is incompatible between the Nintendo Switch™ and Nintendo Switch™ 2 versions.” Select the original Switch software to continue the transferred save; the Switch 2 edition cannot use it.

If the save does not appear

  • Check which software you launched. The old save is for the original Nintendo Switch version, not the Switch 2 edition.
  • Confirm the transfer completed. For individual transfer, verify that the sending and receiving consoles followed the prompts and that the accounts are linked as required.
  • For cloud recovery, check the backup. Confirm that Save Data Cloud is enabled for the game and that the save was backed up under the relevant user account.
  • Check regional availability. The title-specific cloud-support notice cited here is from Nintendo Australia; consult the eShop listing or game menu for your region.
