Buy the Switch 2 edition if you own a Switch 2 and want the publisher-stated resolution and frame-rate improvements; buy the original Switch edition if you still play on the original Switch. The dedicated Switch 2 releases cannot run on the original console. There is no planned upgrade pack, and saves do not transfer between editions, so an existing playthrough will not carry over.

Can you play the Switch 2 version on an original Switch?
No. Nintendo lists the dedicated Switch 2 editions as incompatible with the original Nintendo Switch. If you have not moved to Switch 2, choose the original Switch release of the game you want.

Will your Switch save transfer, or can you upgrade your copy?
No. Square Enix says save data is incompatible between the Switch and Switch 2 versions, and its product notices say there are no plans to sell upgrade packs. Buying the newer edition means starting a separate playthrough; it will not continue a partly completed save from the Switch release.
This applies to each game, not just a bundle purchase. If preserving progress matters more than the Switch 2 edition’s stated improvements, continue playing your existing Switch version.

Square Enix describes the Switch 2 versions of both games as having improved resolution and frame rate over their Switch releases. The announcement does not give target resolutions, measured frame rates, or a numerical comparison, so there is no official benchmark here to use when weighing the difference.

Do you need to play OCTOPATH TRAVELER before OCTOPATH TRAVELER II?
No. The first game follows eight travelers in Orsterra. OCTOPATH TRAVELER II introduces eight new travelers in Solistia, a separate world. Square Enix describes the sequel as independent of the original and suitable for newcomers, so you can choose based on which setting or story interests you rather than buying both in order.
What about the two-game Switch 2 bundle?
Square Enix announced a physical Switch 2 bundle containing both games alongside individual digital releases. It may suit someone who wants both titles, but the announcement alone does not establish whether a retailer currently has stock in your market or precisely what physical format is included. Confirm those details on the seller’s current product page.

Release and series context
Square Enix announced the Switch 2 editions on July 13, 2026, with an October 1, 2026 release date. In that announcement, the company said the OCTOPATH TRAVELER series had sold more than 6 million copies worldwide. That is a series-wide figure, not sales for either individual game.
