Keep your current mobile service active until Mint Mobile confirms that your number transfer is complete. Canceling first can stop the old carrier from releasing the number and may cause you to lose it. During Mint activation, select the option to keep your current number, then submit your number, billing ZIP code, current-carrier name, account number and transfer PIN or account PIN.
Before you start, confirm that your phone is unlocked and compatible, that your number can be transferred, and that Mint service covers the places you use your phone. Have the correct carrier credentials ready. Most mobile transfers finish in a few hours, but Mint says incorrect information can extend the process to 48 hours; landline transfers can take up to five business days.

Why your old service must stay active
A mobile-number transfer, often called porting, moves your existing number from your current carrier to Mint. The current carrier has to verify the request and release the number. Mint states: “Your service must be active with your original carrier in order for them to release your number.” Read the full instruction in Mint’s cancellation guidance.
If you cancel first, the old carrier may disconnect the line before Mint can complete the port. That can make the number unavailable or create a recovery problem. Do not ask the old carrier to close the line simply because you have bought a Mint plan or received a SIM; wait for Mint’s successful-transfer notice.

Keeping the account active does not mean you must keep using the old SIM indefinitely. It means the line and its account information remain valid while the port is pending. Once Mint confirms completion, test the Mint line and then review the old account for its final billing and any carrier-specific cancellation rules.
Check eligibility before ordering or activating
Resolving compatibility or eligibility issues before you submit a port prevents avoidable delays. Mint provides checks for the phone, the number and coverage in its compatibility guide and switching guide.
Confirm the phone is unlocked
The handset should be unlocked so it can accept Mint service. An unlocked phone is not the same as a phone that merely has a removable SIM: a carrier lock can prevent activation even when the hardware is otherwise compatible. If the checker indicates that the phone is locked, resolve that with the current carrier before beginning the transfer.

Run Mint’s compatibility check
Use Mint’s compatibility tool with the phone details it requests. Compatibility depends on the specific device and network capabilities, not just the phone’s brand or model family. Save or note the result so you know whether to plan for a physical SIM or compatible eSIM.
Check that the number is eligible
Enter the existing number in Mint’s eligibility flow. A number can fail a transfer check even when the phone itself is compatible, so perform both checks. If Mint says the number is not eligible, do not cancel the old line; contact Mint support for the available resolution before changing service.
Check coverage where you use the phone
Review coverage for home, work, travel routes and other locations that matter to you. Coverage is a separate decision from port eligibility: a number can transfer successfully even if the resulting service is unsuitable in a particular area.
Collect the information the transfer requires
Mint’s activation flow requests details that identify your line with the old carrier. Prepare them before opening activation:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Current mobile number: enter the number exactly as it appears on the old account.
- Billing ZIP code: use the ZIP associated with the carrier account, not necessarily the ZIP where you currently live or use the phone.
- Current carrier: select the carrier that currently holds the number.
- Account number: copy the carrier’s account number precisely, including any required leading digits.
- Transfer PIN or account PIN: provide the number-transfer PIN when the carrier uses one; otherwise follow Mint’s request for the appropriate account PIN.
PIN terminology and retrieval steps differ by carrier. Mint’s carrier-by-carrier credential guide was updated April 1, 2026; use it as a starting point, then verify uncertain details with the current carrier’s account tools or support team. Do not assume that the PIN used to sign in to an account, the voicemail PIN and the number-transfer PIN are interchangeable. Mint’s activation instructions explain the information fields and flow in How To Activate Your Mint Mobile Plan, while the carrier-specific examples are in Mint’s number-transfer guide.

Keep the old account active and accessible while you retrieve these details. If the carrier changes or regenerates a transfer PIN, use the current value when you submit the Mint request.
Choose a physical SIM or eSIM
Mint supports both a mailed physical SIM and eSIM on compatible, unlocked devices. The choice changes how you receive and install the service, not the requirement to provide accurate porting credentials.
| Option | What you need | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| eSIM | A compatible, unlocked phone and Mint’s app or QR-code activation process. | You want digital delivery and can complete setup on the phone immediately. | Only supported on compatible devices; check Mint’s eSIM information before choosing it. |
| Physical SIM | The Mint SIM and a phone with an accessible SIM tray. Mint says the package includes a SIM-ejector tool. | Your phone does not support eSIM or you prefer a removable card. | You must have the card available before installation; use the steps in the activation flow. |
Choose the SIM type during the plan and activation process based on the phone’s compatibility result and your delivery preference. eSIM activation may use the Mint app or a QR code; a physical SIM remains the alternative when eSIM is unavailable. Mint’s FAQ describes the included SIM tool and common activation questions.

You do not need a particular phone model for this process. You need a Mint plan, a compatible unlocked phone, and either a compatible eSIM setup or the physical SIM supplied for activation. If you choose a physical card, Mint says the package includes a SIM-ejector tool, so a separate ejector accessory is not necessary. The current carrier supplies the account number and transfer credentials; those details do not come from the Mint SIM.
Transfer the number during Mint activation
Do not treat number transfer as a separate cancellation task. Submit it as part of activating the Mint plan and the SIM or eSIM you selected.
- Prepare the phone and account. Confirm the phone is unlocked and passed Mint’s compatibility check. Have the eligible number, billing ZIP, current-carrier name, account number and transfer PIN ready. Keep the old carrier line active.
- Obtain and prepare the Mint SIM. For eSIM, use a compatible phone and be ready for the app or QR-code setup. For a physical SIM, have the card and the phone’s SIM tool available. Mint’s activation page covers the SIM-specific setup.
- Open Mint activation. Start activation in the Mint app or the activation path supplied with your plan. Follow the prompts for the selected SIM type rather than installing a SIM intended for a different device.
- Select the option to keep your current number. Do not choose a new-number option if you want to port the existing line. Enter the mobile number and the billing ZIP when prompted.
- Identify the current carrier. Select the carrier that currently bills and controls the number. Choosing a different carrier can route the request incorrectly.
- Enter the account credentials. Supply the current-carrier account number and the requested PIN or number-transfer PIN. Check every digit and the billing ZIP against the old account before submitting.
- Submit and finish activation. Complete the remaining activation prompts for the eSIM or physical SIM. Do not close the old account while Mint shows the transfer as pending.
- Save the confirmation. Keep any on-screen reference, email or text from Mint. It gives you a record of the request while the port is processing.
The exact labels can change with Mint’s app and website, but the required decisions are the same: retain the existing number, identify the correct carrier, enter matching account credentials and complete the selected SIM activation. Mint’s official walkthrough is How To Activate Your Mint Mobile Plan.
How long the transfer takes
Mint describes timing as an estimate, not a guaranteed deadline. Its number-transfer help page says most transfers complete in “just a few hours.” If information is submitted incorrectly, Mint says the number can take up to 48 hours to complete; landline transfers can take up to five business days. See Can I bring my current phone number to Mint Mobile? for Mint’s stated timing and support guidance.

| Situation | Mint’s stated timing | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Typical mobile transfer | A few hours | Leave the old line active and wait for Mint’s confirmation. |
| Incorrect information submitted | Up to 48 hours | Recheck the account number, transfer PIN and billing ZIP; contact support if the request does not resolve. |
| Landline transfer | Up to five business days | Allow the longer window and keep the original service available during processing. |
Mint says it sends a text and email after a successful transfer. A pending status inside the activation flow is not a reason to cancel the old service; it means the port has not yet been confirmed.

Verify service after Mint confirms the port
When Mint sends the completion notice, test the service on the Mint SIM or eSIM before making changes to the old account.
- Place an outgoing call and confirm that the recipient sees your transferred number.
- Call the number from another phone and confirm that the Mint line rings.
- Send and receive a text message.
- Check mobile data with Wi-Fi temporarily disabled.
- Confirm that the Mint SIM or eSIM is the line selected for calls, texts and data if the phone supports more than one line.
If those checks pass, review the former carrier account for its final bill, device payments or other account items. The old service generally ends as the number moves, but the exact billing and cancellation outcome depends on the former carrier’s terms. Do not assume that a port automatically resolves every balance or installment obligation.
Troubleshoot a delayed or failed transfer
The transfer is still pending
First compare the submitted information with the old carrier account: account number, transfer PIN or number-transfer PIN, billing ZIP and carrier selection. A single mismatched digit can delay the request. Correct information can still take time to process, so use Mint’s stated window before treating a typical few-hour transfer as overdue. If it remains pending, contact Mint support with the activation confirmation and the corrected carrier details.
The account number or PIN is rejected
Ask the current carrier which account number is used for number transfers and whether it requires a dedicated transfer PIN. Some carriers display multiple identifiers in an online account, and the number on a bill may not be the value required for porting. Generate or retrieve the current transfer PIN using the carrier’s process, then submit that value through Mint’s activation flow. Do not guess at a PIN format.
The billing ZIP does not match
Use the billing ZIP saved on the old carrier account. A shipping address, service address or recently changed address may differ from the billing ZIP used for authorization. If the carrier recently updated the address, ask its support team which ZIP is currently associated with the line.
The phone has no service after completion
Check that the Mint SIM is inserted correctly or that the eSIM was installed through Mint’s activation process, then verify that the phone is using the Mint line for cellular service. Test calls, texts and data separately. If the transfer confirmation arrived but the line still does not work, contact Mint support and provide the confirmation details rather than opening a second transfer request.
The number fails the eligibility check
Leave the existing service unchanged and ask Mint support about the number’s eligibility. A failed eligibility result is different from a delayed port, so submitting repeated requests or canceling the old account can make the situation harder to resolve.
The phone is locked or incompatible
Resolve the device issue before activation. The current carrier handles its own unlocking process, while Mint’s compatibility checker identifies whether the phone can operate on Mint. If the handset cannot be made compatible, you need a compatible unlocked device before using that phone with the transferred line.

Coverage is inadequate in an important location
Use Mint’s coverage information for the places you actually need service. Porting eligibility does not guarantee the same coverage experience as the old carrier, so check this before committing the number transfer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Questions readers often ask
Should I cancel my old plan before activating Mint?
No. Keep the old line and account active until Mint confirms that the transfer is complete. The original carrier must be able to release the number. After confirmation, check the former carrier’s final bill and cancellation terms.
Can I use my old phone with Mint?
Usually, only if it is unlocked and passes Mint’s compatibility check. A removable SIM tray does not prove compatibility, and an otherwise compatible phone can still be blocked by a carrier lock.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIs my account password the same as my transfer PIN?
Not necessarily. Carriers may use a dedicated number-transfer PIN, an account PIN or another credential. Follow the current carrier’s instructions and Mint’s requested field; do not substitute a voicemail or sign-in password without confirmation.
What if I do not know my account number?
Look in the current carrier’s account tools or ask its support team which identifier is used for porting. Bills and online profiles can show more than one number, so copy the carrier-confirmed account number exactly.
Will I have a service gap?
Keeping the old service active while Mint processes the request is the best way to avoid an avoidable gap. Mint says most mobile transfers take a few hours, although incorrect details can extend the process to 48 hours. Keep both activation records until testing is complete.
How will I know the port finished?
Mint says it sends text and email confirmation after a successful transfer. Then test incoming and outgoing calls, text messages and cellular data. A pending screen alone is not completion confirmation.
Can I transfer a landline?
Mint says landline transfers can take up to five business days, longer than its typical mobile estimate. Keep the original service available throughout that window and follow Mint’s instructions for the line type.
Best Value
Do I need to buy a separate SIM tool?
No separate tool is required when you use the physical SIM package described in Mint’s FAQ; Mint says that package includes a SIM-ejector tool. eSIM activation uses the app or QR-code process on supported devices.
A practical pre-transfer checklist
- Phone is unlocked.
- Phone compatibility check passes.
- Number eligibility check passes.
- Coverage checked for home, work and regular travel.
- Current carrier account remains active.
- Account number copied from the current carrier.
- Current transfer PIN or required account PIN obtained.
- Billing ZIP verified.
- eSIM support or physical-SIM availability confirmed.
- Mint activation started with the keep-current-number option.
- Calls, texts and data tested after Mint’s completion notice.
Following this order avoids the most damaging mistake: disconnecting the old line before the carrier has released the number and Mint has accepted it.
