What to Do If You Find a Sea Snake on a California Beach

Move people and pets away, do not touch or move the snake, and notify a lifeguard, beach authority, local wildlife agency, or wildlife rescue service. Treat a sea snake as potentially venomous even if it is motionless or appears dead. If anyone may have been bitten, call 911 and seek emergency care; for a possible exposure without life-threatening symptoms, call California Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

What to do in the first minute

A stranded sea snake is a wildlife-response situation, not a do-it-yourself rescue. Keep swimmers, children, dogs, and other pets well away from the animal. Do not pick it up, prod it, place it in a container, or try to push it back into the surf. California guidance says not to handle snakes, dead or alive, and the Australian Museum gives the same instruction for a stranded yellow-bellied sea snake.

  1. Stop and create distance. Back away without stepping toward the snake. Keep others from gathering around it.
  2. Do not attempt an identification. You do not need to prove that it is a sea snake before reporting it. Never approach for a close photograph.
  3. Alert the on-duty authority. Tell a lifeguard, park ranger, harbor patrol officer, or beach-management staff member if one is present and ask them to contact the appropriate wildlife responder.
  4. If no official is present, call the current local wildlife authority or a wildlife rescue service. California does not publish one statewide sea-snake stranding number in the guidance available for this situation, so the correct contact depends on the beach jurisdiction.
  5. Watch from a safe distance only if you can do so without approaching. Give responders the beach name, nearest access point, and a description of where the snake is. Leave the area if staff direct you to do so.

The Australian Museum’s species guidance specifically says, “In cases of sea snake stranding, contact your local wildlife authority or wildlife rescue service.” Read the guidance at Australian Museum: Yellow-bellied Sea Snake.

Who to call in California

Use the contact route that matches the situation. A beach sighting and a possible envenomation require different responders.

If anyone may have been bitten

Assume a possible bite is urgent. Call 911 and follow the dispatcher’s instructions rather than driving while trying to manage the injury yourself. California Poison Control lists unconsciousness, uncontrollable shaking, and any difficulty breathing as life-threatening symptoms that require 911. A suspected serious bite also warrants emergency care even before severe symptoms appear.

When to use California Poison Control

For a possible exposure without life-threatening symptoms, call California Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. The service can assess the details and tell you what to do next. Its emergency guidance distinguishes this non-life-threatening hotline route from the 911 route; read it at California Poison Control’s Poison Emergency page.

What not to do while waiting

  • Do not improvise treatment or follow unverified internet remedies.
  • Do not try to catch the snake so clinicians can see it.
  • Do not delay emergency care to take photographs or obtain a species confirmation.
  • Follow the dispatcher, emergency clinician, or poison-center professional’s instructions exactly.

Tell responders whether there was direct contact, whether a bite was seen, and when symptoms began. If the person has trouble breathing, loses consciousness, has a seizure, or develops uncontrollable shaking, state that clearly to 911.

Why you should treat the animal as venomous

The likely species in a California beach encounter is the yellow-bellied sea snake, Hydrophis platurus. Older or alternate references may use the name Pelamis platurus. The Australian Museum describes this species as highly venomous. A beachgoer should not rely on color, pattern, size, or behavior to identify it, because safe action does not depend on a visual diagnosis.

Sea snakes can be difficult to distinguish from other snakes at a distance, and a motionless animal is not proof that it is harmless. California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s general snake guidance also says not to handle snakes. That advice is intended for California snakes generally, not as a species-identification guide; see California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s snake-safety guidance.

Do not return a stranded snake to the ocean

Picking up a stranded animal and carrying it to the water creates the very close contact that the safety guidance is meant to prevent. The Australian Museum instructs the public not to pick up a stranded sea snake and return it to the sea. Leave decisions about release, rehabilitation, or collection to a qualified wildlife authority or rescue organization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the snake looks dead

Use the same distance rule for an apparently dead snake. Do not touch it, move it with a stick, place it in a bag, or allow a pet to investigate. Report its location and appearance to the beach authority or wildlife responder. A layperson cannot safely determine whether a snake is dead, and the California guidance applies to snakes dead or alive.

If the snake is in the surf or moving back toward the water

Do not follow it, block it, or attempt to guide it. Alert the responsible beach authority from a safe position. Responders can decide whether intervention is appropriate without asking beachgoers to handle the animal.

How rare are sea-snake sightings in California?

California encounters are unusual, but rarity is not a safety test. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County reports six documented yellow-bellied sea snakes in California; five of the six stranded during earlier El Niño events. The museum also says stranded snakes are most likely to appear from October through January. The pages do not state the year for those figures, and they describe historical records and seasonal context—not the odds of finding a snake at a particular beach.

Those records explain why a sighting can attract attention without making it safe to approach. Weather, ocean conditions, and an El Niño pattern may affect when unusual animals reach the coast, but none of those factors changes the immediate response: keep clear and notify a qualified responder. The museum’s context appears in “Storm Creatures” and “NHM Scientists Brace for Unlikely Visitors and Strange Creatures During the Super El Niño.”

Information that helps a responder

You can make the report useful without moving closer. From a safe distance, note:

  • the beach name, city or county, and the nearest entrance, lifeguard tower, or landmark;
  • whether the snake is on dry sand, among rocks, or in the wash zone;
  • whether it is moving, motionless, or partly submerged;
  • whether a person or pet had contact with it; and
  • the time you noticed it.

Do not approach to collect measurements or a close-up image. If you already have a photograph taken from a safe distance, you can offer it to the responder, but obtaining a picture is never a reason to move toward the snake.

Common mistakes and the safer alternative

Tempting response Why it is unsafe or unhelpful Safer alternative
“It is probably harmless, so I’ll pick it up.” Appearance cannot establish species or venom risk. Stay back and report it.
“It looks dead, so I can move it.” California guidance says not to handle snakes dead or alive. Leave it where it is and notify the beach authority.
“I’ll put it back in the water.” The species-specific stranding advice says not to pick up and return a sea snake. Contact a wildlife authority or rescue service.
“I need a close photo before I call.” Approaching for identification increases exposure risk. Report the location without approaching.
“I’ll use tongs, a hook, gloves, or a shovel.” Handling equipment can encourage an unsafe capture attempt. Use no equipment; wait for qualified responders.
“I’ll wait to see whether symptoms develop.” A suspected bite can require urgent assessment. Call 911 for a possible bite; use Poison Control for a non-life-threatening exposure.

What beach managers and bystanders should do

If you are a beach employee, lifeguard, or volunteer who receives a report, keep the public out of the immediate area and contact the jurisdiction’s wildlife authority or rescue service. Do not assign an untrained person to capture the snake. Give responders the location and any known human or pet contact, then follow the authority’s instructions about temporary access restrictions.

Bystanders should not form a circle around the animal or encourage someone else to handle it. A crowd makes it harder to maintain distance and can drive the snake toward people. Quietly move away and pass the report to the responsible official.

A simple decision path

  1. No contact: create distance, keep pets and people away, and notify a lifeguard, beach authority, local wildlife agency, or rescue service.
  2. Possible contact but no life-threatening symptoms: call California Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for case-specific instructions.
  3. Possible bite or life-threatening symptoms: call 911 immediately and seek emergency medical care.
  4. Any uncertainty about the animal: behave as though it could be venomous and do not approach for confirmation.

The safest outcome is a professional assessment of the animal and prompt medical guidance for anyone who may have been exposed. You do not need to touch, move, identify, photograph, or rescue the snake yourself.
