For a Windows PC and a Linux VPS, the simplest graphical route is to connect over SFTP with WinSCP or FileZilla, upload the video to a directory your streaming account can read, then run FFmpeg on the VPS and send the file to YouTube using the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Your PC’s upload speed affects the file transfer; the VPS’s outbound capacity affects the live stream. Measure those separately.
Before you transfer: collect access details and check the two network legs
You need the VPS host name or IP address, the SSH username, the SSH port, and the authentication method supplied by your VPS provider. SSH commonly uses port 22, but the provider or server administrator may have changed it. Confirm the configured port and that the VPS firewall or security rules allow SSH connections from your PC. Google Cloud and DigitalOcean document SSH-based file-transfer workflows, but provider dashboards and firewall controls vary (Google Cloud file transfers; DigitalOcean file transfers).

- PC to VPS: This is the initial upload. Its practical speed depends on your PC’s internet connection, the route to the server, and the VPS’s receiving capacity.
- VPS to YouTube: This is the live stream’s outbound leg. The VPS must sustain the stream bitrate while FFmpeg is running.
Do not assume a particular Indian ISP, VPS region, or route will be fastest. Measure the actual transfer and check the VPS’s available outbound capacity rather than relying on a provider’s advertised headline speed.

Choose a transfer method
| Situation | Method | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| You want drag-and-drop on Windows | SFTP with WinSCP or FileZilla | Provides a graphical local and remote file browser. You need SSH access, the correct host, user and port, and a key or other authentication. |
| You are copying one file from a command line | SCP over SSH | A direct copy. The local shell, SSH key path, remote username and destination path must all match your setup. |
| You will upload repeatedly or synchronize changing files | rsync over SSH | Useful for repeated synchronization; confirm the client is available and select flags appropriate to your environment. |
| Direct SSH is unavailable or inconvenient | Cloud-storage bucket as a relay | Adds an upload and a download, and may incur temporary storage charges. Manage permissions and remove the temporary object when it is no longer needed. |
DigitalOcean lists SFTP, SCP and rsync among command-line transfer options and recommends SSH keys for access. Google Cloud also documents copying files over SSH and transferring through cloud storage (DigitalOcean; Google Cloud).

Upload from Windows using SFTP
- Install an SFTP client. Use WinSCP or FileZilla on the Windows PC. Choose SFTP, not plain FTP.
- Enter the VPS connection details. Set the host to the VPS IP address or hostname, the port to the SSH port confirmed with your provider, and the username to the account that will run FFmpeg. Select the SSH private key or other authentication method configured for that account.
- Connect and verify the remote account. If the client reports an unknown host key, verify the server fingerprint through your VPS provider or administrator before accepting it. Do not ignore a changed fingerprint without checking why it changed.
- Choose a destination directory the FFmpeg account can read. Upload the video there, and note the full remote path and exact filename. Avoid relying on a GUI client’s current directory as a substitute for recording the actual destination.
- Wait for the transfer to finish and check the file. Confirm the remote file exists, has the expected size, and is readable by the account that will launch FFmpeg. A successful upload does not by itself confirm the file is playable.
For repeated transfers, preserve the same destination layout and use rsync over SSH if it is available and appropriate for your client environment. For a one-off command-line transfer, SCP is an alternative. Because shell syntax, key locations, remote paths and client versions differ, use the syntax documented for your installed SSH client rather than copying an assumed command.
Use cloud storage as a transfer relay when SSH is awkward
- Upload the video from the PC to a bucket in the cloud-storage service you use.
- Give the identity doing the upload only the permissions it needs. In the Google Cloud workflow, the guide identifies Storage Object Admin for upload identities and Storage Object Viewer for download identities; other services use different role names and permission models.
- Download the object from the bucket to a directory on the VPS that the FFmpeg account can read.
- Delete the temporary object when it is no longer needed, if you do not intend to keep it there, to avoid unwanted storage charges.
This approach adds a second transfer hop and requires careful permissions. Google Cloud documents the bucket-relay pattern and recommends considering cleanup of the transferred object (Google Cloud file transfers).

Prepare YouTube Live and FFmpeg on the VPS
Get the correct YouTube ingest details
In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the stream and retrieve its current server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS for RTMP-family ingest; use the URL supplied for the stream rather than assuming a fixed endpoint (YouTube RTMPS setup; YouTube encoder settings). Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to the stream. Do not put a real key in a public example, shared script, screenshot, or log.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check the input path and output settings
FFmpeg reads the uploaded video as an input specified with -i and writes to an output URL. When pacing a file in real time for an RTMP-family output, FFmpeg documents the -re input option. The specific command depends on your file, FFmpeg build, chosen codec and bitrate, and the URL and key supplied by YouTube; it should not be treated as one universal command (FFmpeg command-line documentation; FFmpeg protocol documentation).

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Before starting, confirm the FFmpeg process runs as an account that can read the file, and that the destination uses the RTMPS details from the correct Live Control Room stream. Keep credentials out of command history and logs where possible, and restrict access to scripts or configuration files that contain the key.
Choose encoder settings and leave bandwidth headroom
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate encoding; a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds; and AAC or MP3 audio. Settings and bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution and frame rate, so use the live YouTube table for the mode you actually choose. The H.264 figures below are YouTube’s published figures, not independent measurements (YouTube encoder settings).

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
| H.264 output mode | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube advises keeping total stream bitrate below available outbound bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Apply that to the VPS-to-YouTube leg; it is separate from the PC-to-VPS upload that moved the file. For example, if the chosen stream bitrate is close to what the VPS can sustain outbound, lower the output bitrate or choose a lower-demand mode rather than assuming the initial file transfer proves the live connection is sufficient. YouTube also recommends testing and monitoring stream health (YouTube streaming tips).

Test privately before relying on the stream
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Start FFmpeg on the VPS using the uploaded file and the stream’s current RTMPS URL and key.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators while the stream is running.
- Confirm that the intended video and audio play correctly, then confirm the stream ends or continues as you expect before scheduling a real broadcast.
A test catches path, access, ingest and encoding problems before viewers depend on the stream. Recheck YouTube’s current encoder guidance when changing codec, resolution or frame rate; the published settings can change.

Troubleshooting common transfer and streaming failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| SFTP or SCP cannot connect | Wrong host, username or SSH port, SSH service unavailable, or firewall/security rule blocking access | Confirm the VPS connection details and configured SSH port with the provider or administrator, then verify that the rule permits SSH from your PC. |
| Authentication fails | Wrong key or account, or the VPS account is not configured for the authentication method used | Check the username and selected key, and confirm the corresponding public key or credentials are authorized for that account. |
| Upload finishes but FFmpeg cannot open the file | Wrong remote path or filename, or the FFmpeg account cannot read the destination | Use the full path recorded from the upload, check spelling and capitalization, and verify file permissions for the account running FFmpeg. |
| Transfer takes longer than expected | The PC-to-VPS route or either endpoint limits actual transfer throughput | Measure the transfer on the actual route and compare the observed throughput with the file size and time available. Do not infer live-stream capacity from this transfer alone. |
| YouTube does not receive a stable stream | Wrong ingest URL or key, unsuitable encoder settings, or insufficient VPS outbound capacity | Use the current RTMPS details from Live Control Room, compare codec and bitrate with YouTube’s current guidance, leave outbound headroom and watch stream health. |
| The stream key appears in a log or shared file | The key was handled as ordinary text rather than a credential | Restrict access to the exposed file or log and replace or reset the key through YouTube Live Control Room if it may have been compromised. |
