To transfer utilities when you move, contact each provider directly: schedule a stop at your old address, request a final bill sent to your forwarding address, and arrange a start at the new one. Ask whether your provider can handle both addresses as a transfer or requires separate stop and start requests. Do not assume service follows you, that an account closes when you move, or that utilities at a new home are already your responsibility.

How do I transfer utilities when I move to a new address?

  1. List the services at both homes. Check electricity, natural gas, water and sewer where separately billed, internet, and other services you use. If you rent, review your lease and ask the property manager which utilities are included or remain in the owner’s name.
  2. Find out who serves the new address. Your current provider may not serve it. Contact the provider or use local utility information to identify the company or municipality responsible. If the same company serves both homes, ask whether it can transfer your account or needs separate requests.
  3. Contact each provider and give your planned move date. Ask about notice requirements, available start dates, identity checks, deposits, meter access, and required documents. Timing and requirements vary by provider and service.
  4. Set stop and start dates separately. Confirm when service should end at the old address and begin at the new one. Keep confirmation numbers or emails, and contact providers if the move date changes.
  5. Close out the old account. Give the provider your forwarding address for the final bill. Ask whether it needs a final meter reading. If a meter is safely and readily accessible, a dated photo may help you keep a record; follow the provider’s instructions and do not enter restricted areas or handle unsafe equipment.
  6. Confirm who is responsible at the new home. Ask the owner or property manager and the provider who holds each account and the date responsibility changes. Existing service does not by itself establish that the account has transferred to you.
  7. Update your mailing address separately. A USPS Change of Address request is for forwarding eligible mail; it does not stop or start utility service. Notify each provider directly about service dates and billing details.

When should I schedule utilities before moving?

There is no single nationwide deadline. Contact providers as soon as you know your move date, then confirm the exact scheduling window with each utility or service provider for the new address.

  • The Missouri Public Service Commission advises contacting companies several weeks before a move and notifying all providers as soon as possible. This is practical guidance, not a binding deadline.
  • The Maryland Public Service Commission says most utilities require at least 72 hours’ notice for starting, stopping, or transferring service. That guidance applies to Maryland; it is not a national guarantee. Maryland Public Service Commission, “Start, Stop or Transfer Service” FAQ.
  • PG&E says residential customers can, in most cases, request a same-day start or stop and schedule a start up to 60 days ahead. These are PG&E-specific options, not a standard offered by every provider. PG&E, “Start/Stop/Transfer Service”.

What information do I need to start or stop utility service?

Have the following details available when you contact a provider. Its requirements may differ from another company’s.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Your name and contact information
  • The old and new service addresses
  • The date service should stop and the date it should start
  • Your account number, if you have one
  • A mailing address for the final bill and other correspondence
  • Any requested identity verification, deposit, supporting documents, or confirmation of safe meter access

For example, PG&E’s online residential start process asks for the new service address, confirmation about meter access, a start date within its scheduling window, and identity verification. PSE&G asks customers moving within its service area for both addresses and the stop and start dates. Check your own provider’s instructions rather than treating either company’s checklist as universal. PG&E’s start, stop, and transfer instructions; PSE&G, “Start, Stop, or Move Service”.

How do I get a final bill and avoid responsibility for the old address?

Request a final meter reading where applicable for electric, natural-gas, water, or sewer service, and ask the provider how it handles the reading. The Missouri Public Service Commission recommends final readings so the bill can be based on an actual reading rather than an estimate. Give the provider a forwarding address and confirm the old account’s closing date. Its consumer guide, Changing Utility Service When Moving, warns: “Do not rely on others to take utility service out of your name.” The guide says customers remain responsible for accounts that have not been closed. Missouri Public Service Commission, “Changing Utility Service When Moving”.

Some providers offer specific ways to submit a reading. PSE&G, for example, says customers can enter a final meter reading online or submit it as a photo; this is that provider’s option, not a universal process. PSE&G, “Start, Stop, or Move Service”.

What if the new home already has utility service?

Ask the landlord or property manager and the provider who holds each account, who pays for each service, and from what date responsibility changes. This matters in rentals and any property where utilities are already on. Do not infer responsibility from the fact that lights, water, or heating work.

Some arrangements are provider- and property-specific. PSE&G describes an owner-allocation agreement for participating property owners under which its electric and natural-gas services automatically transfer to the owner’s account when tenants vacate. That does not establish how another provider, landlord, lease, or utility handles a move. If a provider says there is a past-due balance associated with the property, ask what documentation it requires and confirm the circumstances before paying a bill that may belong to someone else. What does USPS mail forwarding do—and what does it not do?

A USPS Change of Address request forwards eligible mail; it does not notify a utility to end service, open an account, or change billing records. USPS also advises customers to notify senders of their new address and move date. Contact each utility provider directly to set service dates and update the account’s mailing address. USPS, “Change of Address – The Basics”.
