Support depends on the exact game, edition and platform pair: a remaster may load an old save directly, require an in-game or account-based import, offer only a bonus for detecting an earlier save, or reject the save entirely. Check the publisher’s instructions for your specific versions, back up the original save, and confirm what progress and trophies carry over before changing anything.
First, identify the exact game and platforms
“The same game” or “the same console family” is not enough to establish save compatibility. Write down the full title and edition for both games, along with the source and destination platforms and generations—for example, an original PS4 release and a PS5 remaster, or two PC storefront versions. Then check the publisher’s official support page for that exact combination.

Look for which of these the publisher actually supports:
- Direct save compatibility: the remaster can read the original game’s save.
- In-game import or cross-save: the game provides a specific menu or account-based process.
- Platform-level transfer: a console or cloud feature moves a save, but the game must still support using it.
- Prior-save bonus only: the remaster detects old data to grant a specified reward, without continuing the old campaign.
- No support: progress cannot be transferred.
These are different outcomes. A cloud download or USB copy moves data; it does not convert an incompatible save into a compatible one.

Back up the original save before you start
Use a backup or cloud option supported by the platform and game, and keep the original save until you have verified the remaster’s result. Avoid deleting system save data unless the specific publisher instructions for your situation explicitly require it; advice for a demo-to-full-game process, for example, should not be generalized to remaster transfers.
Use the route the publisher specifies
For a game-specific cross-save feature
- On the source platform, open the game and select Cross Save from the title screen.
- Upload the save using the account and platform pairing required by the game.
- On the destination platform, launch the game under the same account and select Cross Save to download.
- For Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered, Square Enix documents this route for PS4 and PS5 with the same PSN account; its instructions do not establish compatibility for other platform pairs.
For PS4 saved data moving to a PS5
Sony lists console-to-console transfer, cloud download for PlayStation Plus members, and USB copying of PS4 saved data as routes to a PS5. For the USB route, copy the PS4 save from the source console to a USB drive, then copy it to the PS5. Sony’s storage guidance says the USB drive for PS4 saved data should be formatted as FAT or exFAT and not as USB extended storage; not all USB devices work. Sony also says PS5 saved data cannot be copied from a PS5 console to USB. A platform transfer only helps if the remaster accepts the resulting save. Sony’s PS5 storage guide

Check what actually carried over
After the import or download, load the remaster and verify the save slot, character and expected checkpoint before removing or overwriting the source save. Do not assume every part of a playthrough transfers: CD PROJEKT RED says Witcher 3 skills reset in the remastered version, while Square Enix says Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered trophies must be earned again. Follow the game’s own notes for other progression details, including items, unlocks and achievements.

If the save does not appear
- Recheck the exact original and remaster editions and platform pair against the publisher’s compatibility statement.
- Confirm that you used the specified import or cross-save menu rather than relying only on a console transfer, USB copy or cloud download.
- For account-based cross-save, check that the required account is the same on both platforms.
- Do not delete or overwrite the source save while troubleshooting; return to the publisher’s instructions or support channel for that game.
