You can transfer or access a disc game’s data on a new PlayStation, but the transfer does not turn the game into a digital copy. To install and play a disc-based game, insert its original disc into the destination console; the disc remains its license. On PS5, the console also needs a disc drive, and the specific game must be compatible.
Choose the right method for the move

Transfer games from PS4 to PS5
- Prepare the PS4. Sign in to the account you plan to use on the PS5, install the latest system software, and synchronize trophies.
- Connect both consoles. Put the PS4 and PS5 on the same network. A LAN cable can speed up a transfer that would otherwise use Wi-Fi, but it is optional.
- Start Data Transfer on the PS5. During initial setup, follow the transfer prompts. If setup is already complete, open Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue and follow the on-screen instructions. Sony’s Data Transfer guide lists the supported steps and data types.
- Keep the transfer undisturbed. Keep both consoles powered on and do not change their network settings while data is transferring; Sony warns that interrupting or changing these conditions may damage or lose data.
- Install the disc-based game. Insert the original game disc into the PS5’s disc drive when prompted or when ready to install. The disc must be inserted to play the disc-based copy; transferring files does not provide a digital license.
- Check saved data separately. Include saved data in the transfer if offered, or retrieve it from PlayStation Plus cloud storage. You can also copy PS4 saves with a compatible USB drive; PS5 saves cannot be copied to USB.
Data already saved on the destination console does not transfer over, so do not assume the process merges every existing file.

Move data from one PS5 to another
Sony’s Data Transfer process also supports moving data from one PS5 to another. Sign in with the same account, connect the consoles to the same network, then follow the transfer prompts on the destination PS5. The transfer can include games playable on PS5, saved data, user and account information, screenshots, video clips, and console settings.
For a disc-based game, insert its original disc into the destination PS5 with a disc drive to install it. The disc remains necessary to play that copy.

Use USB extended storage for game data
If the game data is already on a USB extended storage drive, connect that drive to the destination console to access the data. This is different from copying saved progress: extended storage holds game data, while save transfers use separate options.
- PS4 games: Sony says PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.
- PS5 games: You can store PS5 game data on USB extended storage, but must move it to console storage or an M.2 SSD before playing.
- Saved data: PS4 saves can be copied to a compatible USB drive. PS5 saves cannot be copied to USB.

Transfer saved progress without the old console
If the source console is unavailable, the console-to-console Data Transfer route is not an option. For saved progress, check whether the save is in PlayStation Plus cloud storage. PS4 saves can also be copied to a compatible USB drive if you have access to that drive; this USB option does not work for PS5 saved data.

Check disc-drive and game compatibility
A PS5 Digital Edition without a disc drive cannot use PS4 Blu-ray game discs. Sony says more than 4,000 PS4 games are ready to play on PS4 and PS5, but that vendor-published count is not a guarantee for every title. Sony also cautions that some PS4 games may not be playable on PS5. Check the game’s listing and Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility information for the particular title before relying on it.
If you are transferring for a child account, Sony says Data Transfer cannot be done during the destination console’s initial setup. Complete setup first, or use an adult account during initial setup and transfer both accounts then.
