You can transfer message history and SMS messages from an Android phone to an iPhone with Apple’s Move to iOS process. Start it while setting up the iPhone, then check the conversations in Messages when setup is finished. Apple does not publish a success-rate guarantee or a fixed transfer time, so “works 100%” is not a claim this process can promise.
What transfers—and what you need to know first
Apple lists message history and SMS messages among the content Move to iOS can transfer. The transfer is part of iPhone setup: if you have already finished setting up the iPhone, Apple’s app-based route requires erasing it and starting setup again. If you do not want to erase it, Apple directs you to move content manually, but its guidance does not establish a manual method for importing a complete Android message history into the iPhone Messages app.

Before you begin, check that the iPhone has enough available storage for the content you plan to move. Apple warns that insufficient space can cause a partial transfer or leave the iPhone appearing full even though the transfer did not finish. The transfer can take a while; Apple gives no fixed duration because the time depends on how much content is being moved.

- Charge both phones and connect them to power.
- Turn on Wi-Fi on the Android phone and keep both devices near each other.
- Have Move to iOS ready on Android. Apple also describes a transfer-without-app option for some compatible devices; check its current instructions to see whether yours qualifies.
- If you plan to connect the phones directly, check that both support the cable and ports you intend to use. Apple says a direct USB-C connection may be faster; a cable is optional.
Choose wireless or a direct cable

Both methods use the app-based transfer during iPhone setup. Apple does not publish a guaranteed speed or completion time for either method.

Transfer messages during iPhone setup
- Turn on the iPhone and proceed through setup until you reach Transfer Your Apps & Data.
- Tap From Android, then choose Transfer with App.
- Open Move to iOS on Android and follow its prompts. On the iPhone, continue until a six- or ten-digit code appears, then enter that code on Android. For a wireless transfer, join the temporary Wi-Fi network created by the iPhone.
- On Android, select the message content you want to transfer and start the process.
- Keep both phones nearby and connected to power. Leave Move to iOS open on Android and wait for the iPhone’s loading bar to finish, even if Android indicates that its part is complete. Using another app or answering a call before the transfer finishes can prevent content from transferring.
Check that the conversations arrived
After setup, open Messages on the iPhone and inspect recent text threads and group chats. Google’s transfer instructions also recommend checking Messages. Do not rely only on the Android screen’s completion message; confirm that the conversations you expected are visible on the iPhone.
If the iPhone is already set up
To use Move to iOS, Apple says to erase the iPhone and start its setup again. This removes the iPhone’s current content, so make sure anything you need is backed up before choosing that route. If you cannot erase it, use Apple’s manual-transfer guidance for content it covers, but do not assume copying files manually will recreate Android message threads in the iPhone Messages app.

Fix a failed or incomplete transfer
- Keep the transfer in the foreground: Leave Move to iOS open on Android; switching apps or taking a call can interrupt the process.
- Stop Android from changing networks: Turn off settings or apps that switch or optimize Wi-Fi connections, and forget known networks before retrying. Apple names Sprint Connections Optimizer and Smart Network Switch as examples.
- Retry with a clean connection: Restart both phones and try again with Android cellular data turned off.
- Check available iPhone storage: If space ran out or the phone appears full despite an incomplete transfer, Apple’s guidance is to erase the iPhone and retry after confirming the Android content fits.
- Wait for the iPhone: Do not stop just because Android appears finished; the iPhone loading bar must complete before you treat the transfer as done.
