Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTransfer files and bookmarks separately: move documents and photos from your Chromebook through Google Drive or a compatible external drive, then sync Chrome bookmarks with your Google Account or export them as an HTML file. Chromebook Downloads are local, so check them before switching devices; they do not automatically appear on your MacBook.
Choose a transfer method
Use cloud storage if you can get online and have access to the account holding your files. Use an external drive for an offline transfer or a large set of local files. Bookmarks have their own routes: Chrome sync is convenient when available, while an HTML export works without sync.

| Method | Best for | What you need | Limitation or caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Drive or another cloud file system | Moving files without a removable drive | Internet access and access to the cloud account | Check that every file has uploaded; network conditions and available account storage matter. |
| USB flash drive or external drive | Offline transfers or local file collections | A drive, compatible file system, and connectors supported by both computers | Eject safely. Back up before changing a drive’s format; formatting erases its contents. |
| Chrome sync | Bookmarks and other selected Chrome data | The same Google Account in Chrome, with sync allowed | A work or school administrator may disable sync. |
| Bookmark HTML export | Portable bookmark transfer, including when sync is unavailable | An exported HTML file moved to the Mac | Transfers bookmarks, not the full Chrome profile. |
Move files from the Chromebook
Use Google Drive
- Find local files: Open the Files app on the Chromebook and check the Downloads folder and other folders under My files. Downloads are stored locally and are not included in Chrome account sync. Google describes Downloads as a temporary local folder, and files may be deleted automatically when Chromebook storage is low.
- Upload the files you want: In Files, copy or move the selected items to Google Drive. Chromebook Files can show cloud storage alongside local files. Google also documents support for other cloud file systems, including Box and SMB; availability depends on the service and setup.
- Retrieve them on the MacBook: Sign in to the same cloud account on the Mac and open the service in a browser or its available app. Check that the files are present and usable before deleting the Chromebook copies.
Use an external drive
- Check compatibility first: Confirm that the drive’s connector can attach to both computers; their ports depend on the specific Chromebook and MacBook models. Google lists FAT/FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS among file systems supported by Chromebooks. Journaled HFS+ is listed as read-only on Chromebooks, so do not assume every format will allow writing on both systems.
- Copy from the Chromebook: Connect the drive, open Files, select the files, and copy them to the drive. Google documents Chromebook access to USB external storage.
- Eject before unplugging: Use the drive’s Eject control in Files, then disconnect it.
- Copy to the Mac: Connect the drive to the MacBook and copy the files into the folder where you want to keep them. If the drive is not recognized, check the connector, cable, file system, and device support before considering a format change.
Do not format a drive that contains files you still need. Google warns that formatting erases the drive. Back up its contents first, and format only if necessary after preserving those files.

Transfer Chrome bookmarks
Sync with the same Google Account
- On the Chromebook, confirm that Chrome is signed in to the Google Account whose bookmarks you want and that bookmark sync is enabled.
- On the MacBook, open Chrome, sign in with that same account, and check the account’s sync settings.
- Open the Mac’s bookmarks in Chrome and confirm they have arrived before removing or resetting anything on the Chromebook.
Google says Chrome sync can include bookmarks and other selected data. Sync may be unavailable on a managed work or school device if its administrator has disabled it.

Export bookmarks to an HTML file
- On the Chromebook, open Chrome’s Bookmark Manager and use its menu option to export bookmarks. Chrome saves an HTML file.
- Move that HTML file to the Mac using Google Drive or an external drive.
- Import it into the destination browser. In Safari, use its bookmark import flow and select the HTML file. If Chrome is installed on the Mac, Safari can also import directly from Chrome. Chrome for Mac can import bookmark HTML through its own import flow.
- Open the imported bookmarks in the destination browser to verify them before deleting or resetting the Chromebook’s originals.
The HTML route is portable when account sync is unavailable, but it transfers bookmarks rather than a complete Chrome profile.
