Switching to a foldable, a larger phone or a smaller one does not usually require a special migration method. The key is the old and new phones’ platforms and model support: start the receiving phone’s setup, choose its data-transfer option and follow the prompts. Keep the old phone until you have checked that the data you need arrived.
Choose the transfer route by phone platform
Use the new phone’s setup flow as your starting point. Available steps and options can vary by device, so follow the prompts on the receiving phone and its manufacturer’s current instructions. These routes are documented examples, not a compatibility list for every model or operating-system version.

Prepare both phones before you start
- Charge both devices and make sure you can unlock the old phone.
- Check the new phone’s available storage if you are moving a large library. Insufficient space can prevent everything from copying.
- For iPhone-to-Android, connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and turn off iMessage. A work- or school-managed iPhone may have restrictions that affect transfer.
- If using a cable, check that it can connect the two phones’ ports. An adapter may be needed; no single cable fits every phone. For iPhone-to-Android, Google describes using the iPhone charging cable with a USB-A-to-USB-C adapter if necessary.
- Keep the phones connected until the transfer completes. Avoid relying on a cable or wireless method that the receiving phone’s instructions do not support.
What may not transfer
iPhone to Android
Google’s documented process has method-specific coverage and exclusions, so it should not be treated as a full device clone. Its listed exclusions include photos and videos stored in iCloud, paid apps and in-app purchases, Safari bookmarks and Health data. Google also notes that the amount transferred depends on whether you use wireless, cable or an eligible upgraded process. Review Google’s transfer details before relying on a specific item moving.

Move to iOS can transfer photos, contacts, messages and more, but the guidance does not promise that every app or app’s data will move. Check that critical information is available through its destination service or the app developer’s instructions. You can deselect Apple Photos or Calendar during setup if you prefer to use Google services.

Android to Android and foldables
What transfers depends on the receiving device’s setup options and the selected data. If a particular app, setting or account matters, confirm it separately rather than assuming the new phone is an exact copy. For Samsung Fold and Flip models, check the model-specific Smart Switch instructions and the phone’s setup state before proceeding.
Verify the transfer before erasing the old phone
- On the new phone, check the items you care about most: messages, photos, videos, contacts and files.
- Sign in to the relevant accounts and confirm that account-based items appear. Check that important apps can be installed and accessed.
- If something is missing, consult the receiving phone’s support instructions before trying a late transfer. Post-setup options differ by manufacturer and model; some eligible Android devices may offer a way to resume through setup prompts or settings. See Google’s Android transfer troubleshooting guide.
- Only after checking the copy should you remove SIM or eSIM service as appropriate, then follow the manufacturer’s or carrier’s instructions to erase the old phone before trade-in, recycling or donation. Google advises clearing the old device only after confirming the data was copied.
If you skipped setup transfer
Do not assume every phone allows a transfer to be started later. Check the model’s support instructions before changing or resetting anything. In particular, Samsung’s guidance says quick setup on an already configured Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip may require a factory data reset; do not reset a phone until you have confirmed a backup and reviewed current manufacturer guidance.
