Select the content to move and wait for the iPhone’s loading bar to finish. If you have already completed iPhone setup, you must either erase the iPhone and start over or transfer content manually. Apple’s instructions apply to its general Android-to-iPhone process; they do not specify an iPhone 17 Pro-specific transfer speed or guarantee that every Android model, app, or carrier feature will work the same way.
Choose the transfer method before setting up the iPhone
Apple’s standard Move to iOS transfer runs during the iPhone’s initial setup. It is the most direct option when you want to move supported data in one guided process, including WhatsApp messages and media. A wired USB-C connection is an alternative Apple says can make the transfer faster. A separate Transfer without App option is available only for compatible Android 17 or later devices. If setup is already finished, Move to iOS is no longer available unless you erase the iPhone and begin setup again. Apple’s general instructions were published May 11, 2026, in its Move from Android to iPhone or iPad guide.

Prepare both phones and check storage
Before opening the iPhone setup flow, decide whether to use the app, a direct USB-C connection, or the compatible no-app option. Check the size of the content you intend to move against the iPhone’s available storage. Include files stored on an external Micro SD card when estimating the Android data total; Apple advises ensuring the selected data fits on the destination iPhone.
- Turn on Wi-Fi on the Android phone and connect both phones to power.
- Keep the devices close to each other for the transfer.
- If you want to move Chrome bookmarks, update Chrome on the Android phone before starting.
- If you plan to connect the phones by USB-C, have a cable that connects them directly. Apple does not specify a cable data rate or guarantee compatibility for every cable or Android model.
- Allow enough time to finish without needing either phone. Apple says duration depends on how much content is being moved and does not publish a typical transfer time.
These preparation steps and the transfer options are in Apple’s official migration instructions. Do not begin by copying or deleting files on the Android phone to make the transfer fit unless you have decided which content you can leave behind; the key check is that the data you select will fit in the iPhone’s available space.

Transfer with Move to iOS during initial setup
Use this process if the iPhone 17 Pro is new or has been erased and is at its setup screens. The names below follow Apple’s documented setup flow; some preceding setup choices can vary depending on the iPhone configuration.
- Begin iPhone setup. Proceed through the initial screens. If asked how to set up the iPhone, choose the option to set it up without another Apple device.
- Open the transfer screen. At Transfer Your Apps & Data, tap From Android, then choose Transfer with App.
- Open Move to iOS on Android. Follow the app’s prompts, agree to the terms, and grant requested permissions when necessary. If you do not already have the app, follow the iPhone’s instructions for getting it on the Android phone.
- Enter the code. The iPhone displays a six- or ten-digit code. Enter it in Move to iOS on Android. The Android phone will then connect to the temporary Wi-Fi network created by the iPhone.
- Select what to move. Choose the available data you want to transfer on Android and tap Continue. Leave the devices alone while the transfer runs.
- Wait for the iPhone’s loading bar. Keep Move to iOS open on Android. The process is not finished just because Android reports that it has completed: wait until the loading bar on the iPhone itself finishes.
- Finish setup. Once the iPhone’s bar is complete, tap Done on Android and Continue on iPhone, then complete the remaining iPhone setup screens.
Apple warns that moving to another app or receiving a phone call on Android before the iPhone finishes can interrupt the transfer. The iPhone’s progress indicator is the completion signal to follow. Apple’s guide does not state a standard duration, because the amount of selected content affects the time.
What transfers automatically—and what does not
Move to iOS transfers supported categories rather than making a complete clone of the Android phone. Apple lists the following categories for its process. Which individual items are available can depend on the content on the Android phone and the choices made during transfer.

The categories and conditions above are from Apple’s Move from Android to iPhone or iPad page. A listed category is not a promise that every app, saved credential, media library, or device-specific setting will transfer. In particular, do not assume that an Android app’s data or sign-in details will be reproduced on iPhone just because an app with a similar name is available there.
Use a direct USB-C cable if you prefer a wired transfer
Apple describes connecting an Android phone and iPhone directly with a USB-C cable as an alternative to the wireless Move to iOS flow and says it can make the transfer faster. The guide does not publish a guaranteed speed, transfer-time estimate, required cable specification, or compatibility list, so do not treat “faster” as a promise for every pair of phones or every cable.
- Connect the Android phone directly to the iPhone with a USB-C cable during the transfer setup.
- Continue through the iPhone’s Android transfer flow and follow its prompts.
- If Android asks you to change a USB setting, follow the on-screen prompt so the connection can be used for the transfer.
- Select the content you want and keep the phones connected until the iPhone’s loading bar finishes.
The cable changes the connection method, not the scope of what Apple lists as transferable. Music, books, and PDFs still need manual handling, and selected data still has to fit on the iPhone. Apple’s transfer guide does not establish that a particular cable model or data rate is required.

Use the app-free option only on a compatible Android phone
Apple also documents Transfer without App for compatible devices running Android 17 or later. This is not a universal Android feature: whether it is available depends on the device, and Apple directs users to check with the Android manufacturer, including for eSIM compatibility.
- During iPhone setup, go to Transfer Your Apps & Data and choose From Android.
- Tap Transfer without App on the iPhone and keep the two devices near one another.
- Use the Android phone to scan the QR code shown on the iPhone.
- Select the supported data offered by the flow and follow the prompts on both devices.
If the QR scan does not work, Apple describes a manual pairing alternative: use Google Services on Android and enter the session ID and pairing code displayed on the iPhone. The available data and pairing requirements belong to this compatible-device route; do not assume that an older Android phone can use it or that its transfer options match the Move to iOS app. Check with the manufacturer before relying on it.
If the iPhone 17 Pro is already set up
Apple’s Move to iOS process is part of initial iPhone setup. If you have completed setup, there are two practical choices:

- Erase the iPhone and start over. This returns the phone to setup so you can choose From Android. Protect anything already on the iPhone before erasing it. Apple’s cited migration guide does not provide a backup plan for this situation, so make sure you have preserved anything you need before proceeding.
- Keep the current setup and transfer content manually. This avoids erasing the iPhone but means handling the content outside the initial Move to iOS flow. Apple points to manual transfer for this case; the appropriate method depends on the content, and its guide does not describe one universal manual workflow.
Choose between these routes before resetting anything. If the iPhone contains data you cannot afford to lose and you are unsure how it is protected, do not erase it until you have confirmed that you can recover it.

Apple says you may be able to activate your phone number and SIM or eSIM during the move. The process may direct you to your carrier’s website to complete activation. With the no-app method, Apple describes a separate eSIM transfer step when supported.
Activation is not guaranteed to follow one path for every user: the carrier, plan, region, Android model, and iPhone configuration can affect what is offered. Keep the carrier account or login details available. If an activation prompt does not appear, or activation fails, contact the carrier rather than assuming the data transfer itself has failed. Apple’s instructions do not establish universal carrier or eSIM support.

Fix a stalled or failed transfer
If Move to iOS stops, fails, or does not complete, Apple recommends addressing common interruptions before trying again. Make one change at a time where possible so you can tell whether the retry works.
- The transfer appears stuck: Keep Move to iOS open on Android and do not switch to another app. Avoid using Android or answering incoming calls until the iPhone’s loading bar completes.
- The phones lose their connection: Disable Android features that interfere with Wi-Fi and forget known Wi-Fi networks on Android before retrying. The Android phone needs to remain connected to the temporary network created by the iPhone during the app-based transfer.
- The process fails again: Restart both phones, turn off Android cellular data, and retry the transfer.
- The iPhone runs out of space or looks full after an incomplete attempt: Apple says to erase the iPhone and try again only after confirming that the Android content you intend to move does not exceed the iPhone’s available storage.
Do not treat an interrupted attempt as complete; use the iPhone’s loading bar to confirm completion. The storage check matters especially when retrying, since an overlarge selection can leave the iPhone full before the migration finishes. These recovery steps are Apple’s recommendations in its transfer guide.
Finish the migration without assuming every item arrived
After setup, check the important categories you selected on the iPhone, such as contacts, messages, photos, calendars, and WhatsApp content. For apps, expect to download available matched versions from the App Store and sign in or configure them as needed; Apple does not guarantee an identical app installation or account state. Move music, books, and PDFs separately because they are outside the automatic transfer. For anything missing, first establish whether it was selected and whether Apple lists it as transferable; if not, use an appropriate manual method for that type of content.
