Use Apple’s Move to iOS during the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s initial setup to transfer supported data from an Android phone. Keep both devices powered and nearby, and do not leave the Move to iOS app or answer a call on Android before the iPhone’s progress bar finishes. If the iPhone is already set up, you must either erase it and start over or move content manually.
Choose the right transfer method

Apple’s instructions are on its Move from Android to iPhone or iPad page. For the app-free process, select Transfer without App during setup and pair the phones by scanning the iPhone’s QR code.

Prepare both phones
- Turn on Wi-Fi on the Android phone and connect both devices to power.
- Check that the data you want to move will fit in the iPhone’s available storage. Include content saved on an external microSD card in your estimate.
- If Chrome bookmarks matter, update Chrome on Android before starting.
- For an optional wired transfer, use a USB-C cable compatible with both devices. Apple says a direct USB-C connection can make the transfer faster; it is not required.
- Leave Move to iOS available on Android and plan not to use that phone until the transfer completes.
Transfer time depends on how much content is being moved; Apple does not promise a set duration.

Transfer with Move to iOS during setup
- Turn on the new iPhone 17 Pro Max and follow its setup screens. If asked how to set it up, choose the option to continue without another Apple device.
- At Transfer Your Apps & Data, tap From Android, then choose Transfer with App.
- On Android, open Move to iOS, accept the prompts, and grant the requested permissions.
- On the iPhone, continue until a connection code appears. Enter that code on Android.
- The iPhone creates a temporary Wi-Fi network. Join it from Android when prompted, then select the content you want to transfer and start the move.
- Keep the phones close together, connected to power, and undisturbed. Wait for the progress bar on the iPhone to finish before using either phone or completing the remaining setup screens.
The Android app may say the transfer is complete before the iPhone’s progress bar finishes. Use the iPhone’s bar as the completion signal. Apple’s step-by-step instructions are on its migration support page.

What Move to iOS can transfer
Apple lists these content types as transferable through Move to iOS:
- Contacts, message history, and SMS messages
- Camera photos and videos, and photo albums
- Files and folders
- Accessibility and display settings
- Web bookmarks and mail accounts
- WhatsApp messages and media
- Voice Memos, call history, and calendars
Some free apps may be matched when they are available in both Google Play and the App Store and support the feature. Matching does not mean every Android app will move, and it does not guarantee that an app’s private data will transfer. Install iPhone apps from the App Store and check with the app developer about transferring data for a particular third-party app.

What needs to be moved manually
Apple specifically says music, books, and PDFs need manual transfer. For other content that does not arrive through Move to iOS, Apple recommends adding supported mail, contacts, and calendar accounts to the iPhone; using a computer or cloud service for photos, videos, documents, music, books, and PDFs; and installing iPhone versions of apps from the App Store. If you already finished setting up the iPhone
Move to iOS is available as part of initial setup, not as a later import option. Apple says you can erase the iPhone and restart setup to use it, or transfer content manually instead.

Erase and start over
Erasing removes data and settings currently on the iPhone. Before choosing this route, confirm that anything you have added to the iPhone is backed up and recoverable. Then erase it, begin setup again, and follow the Move to iOS steps above.
Keep the iPhone as it is
If you do not want to erase it, use the manual options for accounts, files, media, and apps. Apple’s manual transfer instructions explain the available approaches.

Fix common Move to iOS problems
- The transfer stops or some content is missing: Keep Move to iOS open on Android. Switching apps or answering a call before the transfer finishes can prevent content from transferring.
- The phones lose their connection: Keep them close and plugged in. Restart both phones, turn off mobile data on Android, and disable Android features that automatically switch Wi-Fi networks. Apple also suggests forgetting known Wi-Fi networks and trying again.
- The iPhone runs out of space or the transfer is incomplete: Check that the Android content fits in the iPhone’s available storage. Apple advises erasing the iPhone and retrying when storage limits caused an incomplete transfer; first make sure you have a backup of anything already on the iPhone.
- A USB-C transfer will not start: Android may show a prompt requiring a change to USB settings before Move to iOS can begin.

SIM and eSIM activation
You may be able to activate your phone number and SIM or eSIM while moving from Android, but Apple says you could be directed to your carrier’s website to finish activation. The app-free process also includes an eSIM transfer step for eligible devices. Support depends on the carrier, phone model, country, and plan, so check with your carrier and device manufacturer rather than assuming a direct transfer is available.
