A sportsbook withdrawal has no single processing time established here; check the operator’s current terms and the rules of the state regulator.
How old do you have to be to bet on sports?
Check the law and licensed-operator rules for the state where you are physically located when you place the wager. The North Carolina and Kansas examples below both set the minimum at 21, but two state examples do not establish a nationwide age limit.

| Jurisdiction | What the official source says |
|---|---|
| North Carolina | The North Carolina State Lottery Commission’s player FAQ, accessed in 2026, says players must be at least 21. It says licensed online operators use geolocation and that an ineligible person may not place a wager on someone else’s behalf. A player need not be a North Carolina resident, but must be physically in North Carolina to wager with a licensed online operator. |
| Kansas | Kansas statute K.S.A. 74-8757, on the current statute page accessed in 2026, bars a person under 21 from directly or indirectly making a sports wager or otherwise engaging in sports wagering. |
Before opening an account or placing a bet, confirm the current minimum age, licensing rules, and location requirements with the regulator and licensed operator for the state you are in. Living in a state does not necessarily determine where you may wager: physical location at the time of the bet can matter.
Do you have to pay taxes on sports betting winnings?
Yes. For federal income tax purposes, sports betting winnings are gambling income. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) says casual gamblers must report all gambling winnings on Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR, including winnings that were not reported on Form W-2G. The IRS also says estimated tax may be required. These are federal rules; check your state’s tax guidance for any separate state filing requirements.

Will you get a W-2G from your sportsbook?
Not for every winning bet. Form W-2G reports certain gambling winnings and federal income tax withheld; it is not the definition of which winnings are taxable. Whether a sportsbook must issue one depends on the type of gambling, the payment amount, the applicable reporting threshold, and—in sports wagering—the relationship between the winnings and the wager.
The IRS’s Form W-2G instructions revised in January 2026 describe the following conditions for sports wagering. They are not a single rule that makes every payout above a fixed dollar amount reportable:
Rank #2
- Reporting: The January 2026 instructions say a sports wagering payment must meet the applicable reporting threshold, and the winnings must be at least 300 times the amount wagered, for the described Form W-2G reporting requirement to apply. Check the IRS instructions for the tax year in question for the threshold and full conditions.
- Regular federal withholding: The same instructions describe withholding at 24% when sports wagering winnings, minus the wager, exceed $5,000 and the winnings are at least 300 times the amount wagered. These conditions do not mean that every reportable win is subject to withholding.
Because thresholds and instructions are tax-year-specific, consult the current IRS Form W-2G instructions rather than assuming that a form or withholding applies to every winning wager. The IRS says, “Gambling winnings are fully taxable and you must report the income on your tax return.”

What records should you keep for sports betting taxes?
Keep an accurate record of winnings and losses, along with saved evidence that supports the amounts. The IRS’s Form W-2G instructions revised in January 2026 list receipts, tickets, statements, or similar items as examples of supporting records. The IRS does not require a dedicated logbook; a ledger is one way to organize the information, and saved statements or other records may also help substantiate it.

Why is your sportsbook withdrawal taking so long?
There is no universally established U.S. withdrawal timetable, standard payment-method schedule, or common fee policy in the sources cited here. Timing and conditions may depend on the operator, payment method, account circumstances, and applicable state rules. Review the sportsbook’s current cashier or withdrawal terms and the relevant regulator’s rules for the state where you wager.
North Carolina law provides a state-specific example: under specified conditions, a registered player whose account is terminated must be given timely ability to access and withdraw remaining funds. That provision is not a processing-time estimate for ordinary withdrawal requests.
How verification may fit in
As a comparison—not as U.S. law—the UK Gambling Commission’s guidance for Great Britain says online gambling businesses must check age and identity before gambling and should not wait until withdrawal to ask for information they could have requested earlier, subject to cases where legal obligations require later information. The Commission states: “All online gambling businesses must ask you to prove your age and identity before you gamble.” U.S. requirements depend on the applicable U.S. rules and operator terms; the UK guidance does not set them.
