Use Samsung Smart Switch to move supported data from your old Android phone to your Galaxy S26+, ideally during the new phone’s initial setup. Choose a wireless or USB connection, select what to copy, then check the new phone before wiping, trading in, or otherwise giving up access to the old one.
Choose a transfer method

Samsung does not publish a controlled speed comparison showing that wireless or wired transfer is always faster. Pick based on the connection and accessories available to you.

Transfer with Smart Switch during setup
- Prepare both phones. Charge them before starting. If Smart Switch is not available on the old Android phone, install or update it there. Samsung’s S26 guide
- Start setting up the Galaxy S26+. Choose the option to transfer from a Galaxy or Android device, then follow the Smart Switch prompts. The wording and setup screens can vary by carrier and software version.
- Connect the phones. Choose wireless or cable. For wireless, keep the phones within four inches of each other. For cable, connect them using the old phone’s USB cable; a USB-OTG adapter may be needed depending on the connection.
- Approve the connection on the old phone. Grant the requested permissions and let Smart Switch scan for transferable content. Samsung’s UK Android transfer FAQ states that both phones need at least 500 MB of free internal storage. It also says wired transfers require the old device to support MTP; check compatibility if the phone is particularly old or unusual. Samsung UK Android transfer FAQ
- Select what to copy. On the Galaxy, choose Everything, the limited option for accounts, calls, contacts and messages, or Custom, as appropriate. Review the selection before starting.
- Let the transfer finish, then check the result. Keep the phones close during a wireless transfer. The amount of media affects how long copying takes, so there is no fixed duration to rely on. If an app does not transfer or install, download it manually from the relevant app store or provider.
Restore from Google Drive instead
If you have a Google backup, Samsung says you can restore it through the setup wizard after signing in to the Google account on a new or reset Galaxy. This is a setup-time option, not a restore path directly in the phone’s settings. If you have already completed setup, verify that the backup exists before considering a reset; do not erase the phone just to reach the restore flow without weighing the consequences.

What to check before retiring the old phone
The data Smart Switch can transfer depends on the source device and connection method. Do not assume every app, login, or app-specific private file will be copied. Samsung notes that transferable data varies by device and method. Samsung’s S26 guide

- Open the new phone’s Contacts and confirm important names and numbers are present.
- Check recent and older photos, messages, and files that matter to you.
- Open essential apps and confirm they install and work; sign in again where needed.
- Keep the old phone intact until you have verified the items you rely on and completed any app-specific setup.
