These instructions cover Android-to-Android transfers; the official guidance cited here does not establish an iPhone-to-Nokia migration process.
Before you start
- Back up your old Android phone before beginning. HMD recommends doing this before transferring data. HMD’s transfer guide explains the available methods.
- Have access to the Google account used for the backup and an internet connection if you plan to restore from Google.
- Check the setup guide for your exact Nokia model. Menu names and steps can vary by model and software version; HMD’s Nokia smartphone setup guidance and first-time setup guide describe account and restore options.
Choose a transfer method
HMD documents three Android-to-Android options: Google backup and restore, a USB cable during setup, or a dedicated transfer app. Its guidance does not rank them for speed, completeness, or privacy, so choose based on what you have available.

| Method | Useful when | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Google backup and restore | You have backed up the old Android phone to the Google account you can sign into on the Nokia. | A backup, the same Google account, and internet access for syncing. |
| USB cable during setup | You can connect both phones and want to follow the Nokia’s on-screen wired transfer flow. | A compatible cable that supports data transfer and fits both devices. HMD refers to using the original USB-C cable; confirm compatibility for your phones. |
| Dedicated transfer app | You prefer an app-based transfer option. | A transfer app supported by the devices. HMD’s general guidance does not name a specific app or detail its limits. |
Option 1: Restore from a Google backup
- On the old Android phone, create or update its Google backup. The exact controls vary by device and software, so use that phone’s current backup instructions.
- Start setting up the Nokia and connect it to the internet.
- When prompted during setup, choose Restore from Google Backup.
- Sign in with the Google account used for the old phone’s backup, select the data offered for restore, and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Allow the Nokia to sync. Some content may take time to appear as it downloads or syncs.
HMD’s setup guidance says that, when Google backup was enabled on the previous Android phone, certain app settings and Wi-Fi passwords can be restored. Do not assume every file, app login, or app’s private data will transfer; what returns depends on the backup and the app.
Option 2: Transfer with a cable during setup
- Begin setting up the Nokia and select the on-screen option to transfer data from another device.
- Connect the Nokia and old phone with a cable that fits both devices and supports data transfer. HMD specifies the original USB-C cable in its guidance, but ports and cable compatibility vary.
- Follow the Nokia’s on-screen instructions to choose and transfer the available data.
The wired option is not required: Google restore or a transfer app are alternatives. If the phones cannot establish a data connection with the cable, disconnect it and use one of those other methods.

Option 3: Use a transfer app
HMD lists a dedicated transfer app as another route for moving data from an old Android phone to a new phone, but its general guidance does not identify an app or specify which content it transfers. Use an app supported by both devices, check its own instructions for the data it handles, and avoid assuming it will move every account credential or private app file.
What may not transfer, and what to do if setup has passed
Transfer is not a guarantee that every item will move. HMD’s cited setup guidance specifically mentions app settings and Wi-Fi passwords when Google backup was enabled; it does not promise that all files, logins, or app-specific data are included. Review important photos, contacts, messages, and files on the Nokia and use the relevant service or app’s own recovery or sync process for anything missing.

Moving from an iPhone to a Nokia
The HMD transfer and setup sources cited here describe Android transfers, not an iPhone-to-Nokia migration. They do not establish an iPhone procedure, its compatibility, or transfer limits. Do not follow the Android restore steps as if they were verified for an iPhone; consult the current guide for the specific Nokia model and the relevant iPhone services before proceeding.
