The best alternative depends on which privacy layer you want: Mullvad Browser emphasizes anti-fingerprinting without routing traffic through Tor, while Tor Browser sends traffic through the Tor network. Firefox offers a mainstream, configurable starting point; LibreWolf remains an option if you want a Firefox-derived browser whose project says it removes Firefox telemetry and data collection. No reviewed source establishes a universal winner or a comparable head-to-head test.
How to choose an alternative to LibreWolf
“Privacy” can mean several different things. A browser may limit tracking or make fingerprinting harder, while a separate network-routing layer can conceal your direct IP address from a website. Those protections are not interchangeable: choosing a browser for anti-fingerprinting does not, by itself, route your traffic through Tor.

- Want browser-level anti-fingerprinting while using ordinary network routing? Consider Mullvad Browser.
- Want traffic routed through Tor, or need Tor’s censorship-circumvention use case? Consider Tor Browser.
- Want a mainstream browser with privacy controls you can configure? Consider Firefox.
- Want a Firefox-derived browser with privacy-oriented defaults? LibreWolf itself may still fit; its telemetry position is a project statement, not an independently established guarantee.
Compatibility is personal: check the sites, media, extensions, work services, and devices you rely on. The reviewed sources do not provide comparable current compatibility testing for these browsers.

Mullvad Browser: anti-fingerprinting without Tor routing
Mullvad Browser was developed by the Tor Project in collaboration with Mullvad. The Tor Project describes it as Tor Browser without Tor network integrations, making it a candidate for people who want browser-level privacy features but do not want the browser itself to route traffic through Tor. Privacy Guides identifies it as focused on strong privacy and anti-fingerprinting. (Tor Project: Mullvad Browser; Privacy Guides: Desktop Browsers)
#1 Best Overall
- Used Book in Good Condition
Mullvad describes a feature called letterboxing, which limits identifying information revealed by browser-window dimensions. That is one anti-fingerprinting measure, not proof that a user cannot be fingerprinted. Mullvad also says it collects telemetry to improve browser performance, so do not treat it as a no-telemetry browser. (Mullvad Browser)
A VPN is a separate service. Using one does not turn Mullvad Browser into Tor Browser or provide Tor routing.
Tor Browser: choose it when Tor routing is the point
The Tor Project says Tor Browser routes traffic through the Tor network and is designed for privacy, tracking reduction, resistance to surveillance, and censorship circumvention. Choose it when routing through Tor is part of your need, rather than assuming another privacy-oriented browser provides the same network behavior. (Tor Browser)
Tor routing is not a guarantee that user behavior cannot reveal identity. The project describes the browser’s design goals and protections; those should not be read as a promise of perfect anonymity.

Firefox: the mainstream configurable baseline
Mozilla presents Firefox as a browser with privacy features, making it a practical point of comparison if you prefer a mainstream product and want to configure its controls. Its existence as a privacy-capable browser does not establish that its defaults or protections match LibreWolf or Mullvad Browser. Mozilla’s overview is the place to check its current privacy features: Firefox privacy features.
LibreWolf: still an option, not just a point of comparison
LibreWolf is Firefox-derived and positions itself around privacy- and security-oriented settings. The project says it aims to remove Firefox telemetry and data collection. Treat that as LibreWolf’s stated goal rather than an independently verified, absolute guarantee. (LibreWolf; LibreWolf FAQ)
Rank #4
Firefox Focus: a separate Mozilla product
Firefox Focus is not simply desktop Firefox with a different label. Mozilla’s Focus privacy notice says technical and settings data, as well as on-device browsing information, are processed to provide its functionality. That is why “Focus collects no data” would be an inaccurate summary. Check the notice for the scope and current wording: Firefox Focus Privacy Notice.
Brave: an option if you are willing to switch browser engines
If Chromium compatibility matters more than staying with Firefox-derived browsers, Privacy Guides identifies Brave as an alternative with a built-in content blocker and privacy features. It is a non-Firefox comparator, not a Firefox-family choice. (Privacy Guides: Desktop Browsers)

Match the browser to your threat model
For reducing tracking and fingerprinting
Start by deciding whether your priority is browser-level resistance or network anonymity. Mullvad Browser is the clearest fit among these options when anti-fingerprinting is the focus and Tor routing is not wanted. Its design does not eliminate every possible way a site might identify or track someone.
For hiding your direct network origin from sites
Tor Browser is the relevant choice here because it routes traffic through the Tor network. Mullvad Browser does not gain that behavior simply by sharing privacy features or project collaboration with Tor Browser.

For a familiar daily browser
Firefox is the mainstream configurable option; LibreWolf is the Firefox-derived option whose project emphasizes privacy- and security-oriented defaults. For either, verify that your own sites, extensions, media, and workflow behave as needed. The cited sources do not establish a comparative compatibility winner.
Bottom line: there is no single best alternative
Choose Mullvad Browser for a stated anti-fingerprinting focus without Tor routing, Tor Browser when Tor routing is essential, Firefox for Mozilla’s mainstream configurable browser, or LibreWolf if its Firefox-derived privacy defaults suit you. Decide based on the protection you need, then confirm compatibility and read the relevant project’s current privacy disclosures.
