You can copy directly from the old phone with a compatible cable or over Wi-Fi, or restore a Google Account backup if the old phone is unavailable. Keep the old phone until you have checked the new one: setup transfer does not include every file or app detail.
Before you start
Set aside both phones and prepare them before opening the new phone’s setup flow. Google says copying can take from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the amount of data and the devices.

- Charge both phones, or keep them connected to power.
- Make sure you can unlock the old phone with its PIN, pattern, or password.
- Connect the new phone to Wi-Fi or another active internet connection. Wireless copying requires internet access on both phones.
- Check available storage on the new phone, and gather a compatible cable or adapter if you plan to copy by cable.
- Know which Google Account contains your backup, if you may need to restore one.
Choose the transfer method
| Method | What you need | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Cable copy during setup | Both phones, the old phone unlocked, and a cable that fits both phones; an adapter may be needed. | Copying directly when you have a compatible connection. |
| Wireless copy during setup | Both phones, internet access, and the old phone unlocked. | Copying directly when you do not have a suitable cable or adapter. |
| Google Account backup restore | Access to the Google Account and a backup that was already enabled on the old phone. | Restoring when the old phone is unavailable. |
Google says cable and wireless direct copying support the same data. The main difference is how the phones connect. Exact options and screens can vary by phone model and Android version. Google’s Android transfer guide describes the setup process and its data coverage.
Way 1: Copy data with a cable during setup
- Turn on the new phone and follow its on-screen setup instructions until asked whether to copy apps and data. Choose the copy option.
- Connect the phones using a cable that fits both ports. If the connectors do not match, use a compatible adapter.
- Unlock the old phone and follow the prompts on the new phone. Sign in to a Google Account if prompted; Google recommends doing so for a more complete transfer.
- Review the data types available to copy, select what you want, and let the transfer finish before disconnecting the phones.
Google says a cable copy can take from a few minutes to over an hour, depending on how much data is being copied. Keep both devices available until setup indicates the transfer is complete.

- Confirm that the shapes and numbers shown on the two phones match, then follow the prompts to connect them.
- Choose the data to copy and leave both phones connected to the internet until the transfer finishes.
Wireless transfer avoids cable and adapter compatibility issues, but it still requires the old phone to be available and unlocked. Screen wording differs between devices, so follow the prompts shown on your own phones. Google’s transfer instructions cover both direct methods.
Way 3: Restore a Google Account backup
Use this method if you cannot use the old phone and had enabled its Google backup beforehand. A backup cannot recover information that was never backed up.

Verify the new phone before wiping the old one
Before resetting, trading in, or recycling the old phone, check that the information you depend on is present and usable on the new one. In particular, open your messaging and photo apps, review important files and contacts, and sign in to essential apps and accounts. If something is missing, the old phone may still be the only place to retrieve it.
If you already finished setting up the new phone
The direct copy option is most reliable during initial setup, and Google warns it may not be available later on every device. Some phones show a Finish setting up option for a few days after setup. Google also says a transfer-from-another-device option in Settings is available on Android 17 and later and on select earlier devices. Because availability depends on the phone, check the manufacturer’s support information for your exact model.

Quick Recap
Common transfer problems
- The phones will not connect by cable: Check that the cable supports a phone-to-phone connection and fits both ports. Try a compatible adapter if the connectors differ. If no suitable cable is available, use wireless copy during setup.
- The wireless pairing does not appear: Confirm both phones have internet access, unlock the old phone, and follow the pairing prompts shown on the new device. On the old phone, the Google app may ask you to search for set up my device.
- The backup is not listed: Check that you signed in with the Google Account used for the old phone’s backup and that a backup had been enabled before the old phone became unavailable.
- Some files or app information are missing: Setup copy excludes certain categories, including downloads, hidden-folder media, apps installed outside Google Play, and data from apps that do not use Android backup. Check the relevant app, account, or storage location on the old phone if it is still accessible.
