The most reliable way to move data from an HMD or Nokia phone to a new Android device is to start the new phone’s setup wizard and use a USB-C data cable. Android also offers wireless device-to-device copying, while a Google Account backup is the fallback if the old phone is lost, broken or unavailable. Back up the old phone first, keep it unlocked, and do not erase it until you have checked the new device.
Choose the transfer method that fits your situation
Android presents the transfer choices during initial setup. The labels differ slightly between manufacturers and Android versions, but the underlying options are the same. Use this comparison before you begin.

| Method | What you need | Best use | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB cable | Both phones, charged and unlocked, plus a compatible USB-C data cable | Large transfers when you want the most predictable connection | A charging-only cable will not carry data; connector and cable requirements vary by model |
| Wireless device-to-device | Both phones, working Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and compatible setup software | When no suitable cable is available | Depends on battery level, wireless radios and the setup wizard remaining active |
| Google Account backup | A current backup and the Google Account used on the old phone | When the old phone cannot be used | Only backed-up items can be restored; many apps require a fresh sign-in |
| Dedicated transfer app | An app that supports both devices and permission to read the selected data | Only when the built-in Android flow does not meet your needs | Privacy, security, compatibility and data coverage vary by app |
HMD describes Google Drive backup, a USB cable and a dedicated transfer app as its three broad approaches. Google’s Android setup supports cable or wireless copying, with a Google Account backup as the fallback when the old phone is unavailable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrepare both phones before copying anything
Charge the phones and update the old one
Charge both devices before starting. A transfer can take longer when there is a large amount of data, and an interruption can leave you unsure which items completed. Install available system updates on the old HMD or Nokia phone before creating its final backup. If the new phone is already updating, let that process finish before beginning the transfer wizard.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Confirm your Google Account and screen lock
Make sure you know the email address and password for the Google Account on the old phone. Keep the old phone’s PIN, pattern or password available as well. Android may ask for the old device’s screen-lock credential to authorize a copy or restore, and Google Account verification can require the old phone during sign-in.
Connect both devices to Wi-Fi
Use a stable Wi-Fi network on both phones. Wireless copying needs working Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a cloud restore needs internet access to download the backup and applications. Avoid switching networks halfway through unless the setup screen specifically asks you to do so.
Create a fresh backup on the old phone
On many HMD and Nokia models, the path is:
- Open Settings.
- Open System or Systems.
- Tap Google.
- Choose Backup.
- Tap Backup now.
Menu names vary by Android release, so use the Settings search field for backup if those labels are different. Wait for the backup to complete and check its date before turning off or resetting the old phone. A backup protects you if a cable disconnects or the setup process has to be restarted, but it does not guarantee that every app’s private data is included.
Keep the old phone usable
Leave the old phone powered on, unlocked and close to the new one until the copy finishes. Do not remove its Google Account, uninstall applications or factory-reset it while the transfer is in progress. If the old phone is damaged, make the backup and transfer attempt before doing anything that could make it stop working.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Method 1: transfer directly with a USB cable
A direct cable connection is usually the clearest choice for a substantial move because the phones communicate without first uploading everything to the cloud. HMD specifically recommends the original USB-C cable where available. A USB-C to USB-C data cable is the normal physical fit, but check the ports on both models: some older phones may need a compatible adapter. The cable must support data, not only charging.
- Turn on the new Android phone and begin its setup.
- Continue until you reach the screen labelled Copying apps and data or a similar transfer prompt.
- Choose the option to copy from an old Android phone.
- Connect the HMD or Nokia phone to the new phone with the compatible USB data cable.
- Unlock the old phone when prompted and approve the connection on either or both screens.
- Review the categories Android offers, such as apps, contacts, call history, text messages and device settings. Clear anything you do not want copied.
- Tap Copy, Continue or the equivalent button on the new phone.
- Leave the cable connected and both screens available until Android reports that copying is complete.
- Finish the remaining setup steps on the new phone, then open key applications and verify the transferred information.
The amount of data determines how long the process takes; there is no dependable universal time. Photos, videos and installed applications can make a transfer substantially larger than a contacts-only move.
If the cable transfer does not start
- Confirm that the cable is a data cable and that both plugs are fully seated.
- Try the original cable supplied with the old phone, if it is available.
- Unlock the old phone and look for a USB permission or connection prompt.
- Disconnect and reconnect only after returning to the transfer screen; do not repeatedly unplug a copy that is already progressing.
- If the phones still do not recognize one another, restart both and try the setup flow again. Use wireless copying or the backup restore route if the cable remains incompatible.
Method 2: copy wirelessly during setup
Wireless transfer avoids a cable, but both phones must remain powered, nearby and able to use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Start it from the new phone’s initial setup rather than waiting until after the home screen appears.

- Choose the wireless option to copy from an old Android phone.
- On the old HMD or Nokia phone, follow the instruction to enable or confirm the connection. Unlock it and approve any pairing request.
- Check that the device name or verification prompt matches the new phone before accepting.
- Select the categories to copy and start the transfer.
- Keep both phones close, on Wi-Fi, and awake until the new phone says the copy has completed.
- Complete setup and check the items that matter most.
Wireless setup software differs between manufacturers. One phone may call the action Copy apps and data, while another uses Bring your data from an old device or similar wording. Follow the on-screen choice that indicates an Android-to-Android transfer rather than a new-device-only setup.

When wireless copying fails
Confirm that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on both phones, temporarily disable battery-saving modes that suspend connectivity, and keep the devices close together. If the pairing prompt disappears, return to the previous setup screen and start the wireless option again. A cable transfer is preferable when the connection repeatedly drops or the phones contain a large amount of data.
Method 3: restore from a Google Account backup
Use this route when the old phone is lost, broken, wiped or otherwise unavailable. It restores the latest backup associated with your Google Account; information that was never backed up cannot be recovered through this process.
- Start the new phone’s setup wizard and connect it to Wi-Fi.
- At the data-copy screen, choose the option indicating that the old device cannot be used, or choose the cloud-backup route.
- Sign in with the same Google Account used on the HMD or Nokia phone.
- Select the most recent available device backup and check its date and device name.
- Enter the old phone’s screen-lock PIN, pattern or password if Android requests it.
- Select the data categories offered for restoration and confirm.
- Leave the new phone connected to Wi-Fi while applications and backed-up information are restored. Some items may continue downloading after the initial setup is complete.
- Open important applications and sign in again where required.
If no backup appears, verify that you entered the correct Google Account. A backup created under another account will not appear in this list. If the old phone is still usable, return to it, create a fresh backup using Settings > System (or Systems) > Google > Backup > Backup now, and restart setup on the new phone.

Move WhatsApp chats separately
WhatsApp has its own cloud-backup requirement. Ordinary Android device backup should not be assumed to contain every WhatsApp conversation unless WhatsApp itself reports that the chats are backed up.

On the old phone
Open WhatsApp and check its chat-backup status in WhatsApp’s backup settings. Confirm that a recent backup exists under the Google Account you intend to use on the new phone. Keep the old phone intact until the restore succeeds.
On the new phone
- Install or open WhatsApp after the Android transfer or restore has finished.
- Verify the same phone number used on the old device.
- Sign in with the Google Account that contains the WhatsApp backup, if WhatsApp requests it.
- When WhatsApp offers to restore chats from a previous backup, follow the on-screen instructions and choose Restore.
- Wait for the chat restore to finish before judging the transfer. Media can continue appearing after message history is restored.
If WhatsApp does not offer a restore, check the phone number, Google Account and backup date. A general Android backup cannot recreate chats that WhatsApp never backed up.

The exact result depends on Android versions, the app involved and any device-management policy. During setup, Android displays the categories available for the selected method.
Recommended Free Tools
| Category | Typical result | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Contacts | Can be copied or restored when they are included in the selected source | Open the Contacts app and confirm that the expected account or device entries are visible |
| Call history | May be included in Android’s transfer categories | Check the Phone app after setup |
| Text messages | May be copied or restored | Open the messaging app and inspect recent conversations |
| Device settings | Some settings can be restored | Review Wi-Fi, display and notification preferences rather than assuming every setting moved |
| Applications | Compatible apps can be reinstalled from Google Play | App availability and app-specific data vary; some apps require setup again |
| App data | Only supported app data is included | Expect differences between apps and Android versions |
| Security-sensitive apps | Often require fresh authentication or registration | Banking, authentication and similar apps may ask for credentials, verification or device registration again |
An organisation-managed phone may have policies that prevent all data from transferring. If the HMD or Nokia phone is controlled by an employer or school, the administrator’s restrictions take precedence over the normal consumer setup flow.

If the new phone is already set up
Android’s most complete transfer flow is designed for the initial setup wizard. If you skipped it, open Settings and search for backup, restore, copy data or device transfer. The exact label and location depend on the new phone’s manufacturer and Android version.
Some phones can restore a Google backup from Settings without erasing the device. Others provide the transfer choices only after a factory reset. Do not reset the new phone until you have confirmed that the old phone’s backup exists and that you know the Google Account credentials. A reset removes data currently on the new phone, so copy anything new from it before proceeding.
Troubleshoot common transfer problems
The old phone is not detected
- Unlock the old phone and accept every USB or pairing prompt.
- Replace a charging-only cable with a USB-C data cable that matches both ports.
- Restart both devices and return to the new phone’s setup transfer screen.
- If a work or school policy controls the old device, ask the administrator whether transfers are restricted.
The transfer stops partway through
- Keep both phones charging or begin with substantially charged batteries.
- Keep the phones close and connected to the same Wi-Fi network when using wireless mode.
- Do not lock, reset or remove the Google Account from the old phone.
- Restart the setup process and use the fresh backup you made before the first attempt.
The backup is not listed
- Check the Google Account email carefully; multiple accounts on one phone can be easy to confuse.
- Confirm the backup completed on the old device and has a recent date.
- Connect the new phone to stable Wi-Fi and sign in again if prompted.
- If the old phone is unavailable and no backup exists, data that was never backed up may not be recoverable through Google’s restore flow.
An application is present but its information is missing
Android may reinstall the application without restoring its private data. Open the app and use its own sign-in or restore process. Banking, authentication and other security-sensitive applications commonly require fresh verification or registration even when the application itself transferred successfully.
Some contacts or messages are absent
Check whether those items were stored in a different account or only on the old phone’s local storage. Re-run the transfer from the old phone while it is still available, or check the categories selected during restore. The available categories and results vary by Android version and device policy.
Quick Recap
Protect your information during and after the move
- Use the new phone’s built-in Android transfer first; it requires fewer third-party permissions than an unknown transfer utility.
- If you use a dedicated transfer app, read its privacy and security terms before granting access to contacts, messages, files or accounts.
- Do not give another person your Google Account password or screen-lock credential. Enter credentials only on the phones’ own setup screens.
- Keep the old phone until contacts, messages, photos or other important categories have been checked on the new device.
- After verification, remove the old phone from your accounts or perform a factory reset before handing it to someone else. A reset should be the final step, not a way to start troubleshooting before the backup is confirmed.
Final pre-reset checklist
- The new phone can make calls and connect to Wi-Fi.
- Contacts, recent call history and text messages appear as expected.
- Important applications open, and you have completed any required sign-in or registration.
- WhatsApp has restored the correct chats from its own backup.
- Photos, files and other high-value data that you expected to move are present.
- You know which items were not included and have another copy where possible.
- The old phone has not been erased until all checks are complete.
