How to Calibrate the Alienware AW3226Q OLED for Accurate Colors and HDR

The Alienware AW3226Q is already close to accurate in its factory Standard mode, but its gamma is light. Use Creator when you need an sRGB target and gamma control, accepting a grayscale trade-off; do not use Custom Color as a complete calibration mode because it has no gamma adjustment.

For HDR, calibrate the exact combination of monitor HDR mode, GPU, cable path and content format you actually use. The display supports DisplayHDR True Black 400, HDR10 and Dolby Vision, and Windows HDR Calibration must be run separately whenever that signal path changes.

What the AW3226Q can deliver before you change a setting

The AW3226Q is a 32-inch 4K OLED monitor with a 3,840 × 2,160 native resolution. Tom’s Hardware identifies its panel as a 165 Hz tandem RGB-stripe OLED design. Dell specifies 99% DCI-P3 coverage and an average Delta E below 2, which indicates a wide-gamut panel with strong factory color performance. Those figures describe the display as shipped; they are not a promise that every unit, input or viewing condition will measure identically.

Characteristic Published figure or support How it affects calibration
Native resolution 3,840 × 2,160 Use the panel’s native resolution for evaluation and profiling.
Maximum refresh rate 165 Hz Higher refresh operation can change the available bit depth or link bandwidth, so verify the active signal after changing refresh rate.
Color gamut 99% DCI-P3 (Dell specification) Wide-gamut output can make ordinary sRGB material look oversaturated unless the monitor or application applies an sRGB target.
Factory color result Average Delta E below 2 (Dell specification) Standard mode is a sensible baseline rather than something that requires arbitrary RGB values.
HDR peak 1,000 nits on a 3% window (Tom’s Hardware) This is a small-highlight measurement, not a full-screen brightness level.
Full-field brightness 250 nits (Dell manufacturer specification) Large bright areas will not reach the same luminance as a small HDR highlight.
HDR formats DisplayHDR True Black 400, HDR10 and Dolby Vision Calibrate the mode and source format you actually intend to use.

OLED behavior also matters. The panel uses a three-subpixel, four-stack OLED design and Dell’s Constant Power Control (CPC). CPC can dim the outer portions of the screen to control power and reduce burn-in risk. A measurement taken while the edges are temporarily dimmed can look like a calibration error even when the monitor is operating normally.

Prepare the monitor and signal before judging color

  1. Reset the OSD. Restore the monitor to its factory defaults so an old brightness, color-temperature or HDR setting does not contaminate the comparison.
  2. Warm the panel normally. Turn it on and allow it to reach its normal operating state before evaluating white balance, grayscale or brightness. Avoid making decisions immediately after a cold start.
  3. Use a centered viewing position. Sit at the normal working distance with your eyes near the center of the screen. Keep a stable, uniform image on screen while making judgments.
  4. Choose a consistent connection. Use the same GPU output, cable and refresh-rate combination for calibration and everyday use. Changing any of them can change the signal format and invalidate a software profile.
  5. Set a full-range RGB signal where supported. In the GPU control panel, select RGB output and full range. Select 10-bit output when the GPU, cable and refresh rate can carry it. Exact control-panel labels differ by GPU and operating system.
  6. Verify rather than assume. Check the GPU control panel and the monitor’s information page to confirm the active resolution, refresh rate, RGB range and bit depth. Dell’s AW3226Q User’s Guide is the authoritative reference for the exact OSD and connection labels.

Do not alter several variables at once. For example, changing refresh rate, enabling HDR and switching from DisplayPort to HDMI makes it impossible to tell which change affected the result.

SDR calibration: Standard, Creator or Custom Color?

Start with the monitor in SDR and evaluate the three relevant color modes in a fixed order. Tom’s Hardware found no visible color or grayscale errors in Standard mode, while noting that its gamma is too light. Creator provides the controls needed for an sRGB target and gamma adjustment, but its grayscale calibration is sacrificed. Custom Color lacks gamma control, so it cannot serve as a complete accuracy workflow.

1. Establish the Standard-mode baseline

  1. Turn HDR off in the operating system so the desktop is being evaluated as SDR.
  2. Open the AW3226Q OSD and select Standard.
  3. Leave the factory color controls unchanged for the first check. View neutral gray ramps, skin tones, saturated colors and text on a uniform desktop.
  4. Assess gamma separately from hue. A picture can have neutral-looking grays and still appear lighter than the intended tonal curve; that is the principal Standard-mode caveat reported by Tom’s Hardware.

Standard is the best first choice when you want the monitor’s factory balance with no profiling hardware. Its light gamma may be acceptable for general desktop work, especially in a bright room, but it is not the same as a measured reference gamma.

2. Use Creator for an sRGB workflow

  1. Select Creator in the OSD.
  2. Choose the sRGB color-space target when your work is intended for ordinary sRGB displays, web graphics or software that assumes sRGB.
  3. Use Creator’s gamma control to select the tonal response that matches your workflow and viewing environment.
  4. Recheck neutral grays after changing gamma. Creator’s useful sRGB and gamma controls come with a grayscale-calibration trade-off, so do not assume that a selected sRGB gamut automatically means perfect grayscale.
  5. Save the result as your SDR working state and keep applications in a color-managed configuration where possible.

Creator is the practical choice when controlling the gamut and gamma matters more than preserving the factory grayscale balance. If your work depends on exact neutral tones, finish with a colorimeter profile rather than relying on a visual adjustment.

3. Do not treat Custom Color as a full calibration mode

Custom Color can be useful for personal preference, but Tom’s Hardware reports that it has no gamma control. Without gamma adjustment, you cannot correct the light tonal response identified in Standard mode. It is therefore not a substitute for Creator when you need an sRGB target, and it is not a substitute for measured profiling when you need repeatable accuracy.

Mode Gamma control sRGB targeting Grayscale result Best use
Standard Not reported as available Not the mode’s purpose No visible color or grayscale errors reported by Tom’s Hardware; gamma is light Factory-balanced general SDR viewing
Creator Available Available Grayscale calibration is given up when using its gamut/gamma controls sRGB-oriented work where gamut and gamma control are priorities
Custom Color Not available Not established Cannot correct gamma through the OSD Personal color preference, not complete calibration

  • Use Custom Color only for preference. Its lack of gamma control prevents it from addressing the principal tonal limitation identified in Standard mode.

There is no honest, universal set of red, green and blue numbers for every AW3226Q. OLED unit variation, firmware, ambient light and the active signal path all affect a measured result. A copied preset can make one unit look worse while appearing plausible on another.

HDR calibration: match the mode to the content

The AW3226Q supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision and carries a VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 designation. Those are related but different things: HDR10 and Dolby Vision describe content or signal formats, while DisplayHDR True Black 400 is a display-performance standard. The OSD mode you select determines how the monitor handles the incoming HDR signal.

DisplayHDR True Black 400 versus a peak-priority preset

DisplayHDR True Black 400 is the named standards-based mode from Dell. Some monitor firmware also exposes an alternate HDR preset that emphasizes highlight impact. The supplied measurements do not establish a universal name or numeric behavior for that alternate preset, so read the exact label shown on your unit and compare it with known test material.

Decision point DisplayHDR True Black 400 Peak-priority HDR preset
Purpose Follow the monitor’s named DisplayHDR standard mode. Favor a more forceful highlight presentation when the OSD offers such a preset.
Tone mapping Use as the standards-oriented reference when calibrating. May use different tone mapping; the exact curve is not established in the cited measurements.
Full-screen brightness Do not infer full-field output from the 1,000-nit small-window figure; Dell specifies 250 nits full field. Measured full-screen behavior is not stated; judge with large bright test scenes.
Highlight intensity Reference the display’s standards behavior and verify clipping. Can be preferred for visually stronger highlights, but verify that bright detail is not clipped.
Shadow detail Check near-black steps for crushing. Check again after switching, because a different tone curve can alter shadow visibility.

Do not copy a peak-nits value from another OLED monitor. The AW3226Q’s 1,000-nit figure is a 3% window measurement from Tom’s Hardware; it does not describe every scene, firmware version or HDR preset.

Run Windows HDR Calibration for the exact path you use

  1. Enable HDR only for HDR work. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > HDR and enable HDR for the AW3226Q when you are going to play HDR games or watch HDR video. Turn it off for ordinary SDR desktop work if the desktop appears raised, gray or washed out.
  2. Select the intended monitor HDR mode. Put the AW3226Q in DisplayHDR True Black 400 or the alternate HDR preset you plan to use. Do not run the calibration in one mode and then switch to another for daily use.
  3. Confirm the signal path. Keep the same GPU output, cable, resolution, refresh rate and bit depth you will use for HDR. A profile made through one path is not automatically valid through another.
  4. Open the Windows HDR Calibration app. Follow its black-level, maximum-luminance and full-screen-brightness patterns while the monitor is in the selected mode. Adjust only until detail is visible where the pattern calls for it; do not chase a larger number because it looks more impressive.
  5. Save the calibration for that display path. Associate the resulting profile with the AW3226Q connection and keep the monitor HDR mode unchanged.
  6. Validate with real content. Use known HDR test patterns or reference scenes to inspect near-black detail, highlight clipping, specular highlights and large bright areas.
  7. Repeat after a material change. Re-run the app after changing the monitor HDR mode, GPU, cable path or a major firmware version.

Keep Dolby Vision comparisons consistent

Dolby Vision content may be tone-mapped by the display or by the source device. When comparing results, keep the source’s Dolby Vision setting and the AW3226Q’s HDR behavior consistent. A Dolby Vision movie viewed through a different source setting is not a valid comparison with an HDR10 game, even if both are labeled HDR.

Set the computer output correctly

Color problems are often caused by a range or bit-depth mismatch rather than by the panel’s color mode. Configure the GPU for RGB/full range when available, then verify the monitor’s information page. If 10-bit output is offered, use it only when the GPU, cable and selected refresh rate support it reliably. An unstable link that drops frames or changes format is worse than a stable lower-bit-depth signal.

Menu names differ between GPU vendors and operating systems, so use the controls exposed by your hardware and consult the AW3226Q User’s Guide for the monitor-side connection procedure. Record the working combination of input, refresh rate, RGB range and bit depth before creating an ICC profile.

Why edge dimming or a green tint may not be a calibration fault

Dell’s support article documents edge or corner dimming, color shift, green tint, white-luminance variation and uneven color uniformity, including changes seen at a 45-degree viewing angle. Dell states: “Some variation in brightness uniformity is a known characteristic of this panel type and is not a defect.”

The stated cause is the three-subpixel, four-stack OLED panel working with Constant Power Control. CPC can darken the outer edges to reduce burn-in risk. Dell says brightness gradually recovers after the screen changes to uniform content, and increasing the monitor’s brightness setting may reduce the visible center-to-edge difference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evaluate the panel without chasing an angle-dependent tint

  1. Face the screen directly from your normal seated position.
  2. Display a stable, uniform gray or white field and allow the panel to settle.
  3. Compare the center and edges without moving your head to a steep angle.
  4. If the edges brighten after uniform content remains on screen, treat the earlier dimming as CPC behavior rather than a color-profile error.
  5. Do not shift the neutral white point to cancel a green tint that appears only when viewed obliquely; that will make straight-on whites less accurate.

A persistent defect visible straight on with stable content, accompanied by other symptoms such as flicker or failure to recover, should be documented and handled through Dell support rather than “corrected” with arbitrary RGB offsets.

When a colorimeter and ICC profile are worthwhile

Software-only setup is sufficient for many users because Standard mode is already close to accurate and Creator supplies basic sRGB and gamma controls. A colorimeter becomes worthwhile when you need a measured ICC profile for one specific AW3226Q, one brightness target, one ambient-light condition or a color-managed production workflow.

  1. Reset the monitor and complete the SDR or HDR mode setup first.
  2. Place the colorimeter flat against the center of the warmed display, blocking stray light.
  3. Run the profiling software’s measurement sequence at the brightness and mode you intend to keep.
  4. Install the generated ICC profile in the operating system and select it for the AW3226Q display.
  5. Use color-managed applications for profile-aware work, and verify with neutral ramps and known color patches.
  6. Repeat profiling if you change brightness substantially, move the monitor to a different lighting environment, change the monitor mode, replace the GPU or cable path, or install major firmware.

No AW3226Q-specific colorimeter model or universally validated numeric RGB preset is established here. The value of profiling is the measurement of your individual unit, not the purchase of a particular unverified device or the use of someone else’s numbers.

Troubleshooting guide

Symptom Likely explanation Action
SDR desktop looks too bright in the midtones Standard mode’s gamma is reported as light. Try Creator, select sRGB if appropriate, and use its gamma control.
Colors look overly saturated in web or office software The wide DCI-P3 gamut is being used for sRGB material. Use Creator’s sRGB target or a color-managed workflow.
Neutral gray shifts after switching to Creator Creator’s gamut/gamma controls involve a grayscale-calibration trade-off. Profile the individual monitor if neutral accuracy is critical.
Custom Color does not fix tonal brightness Custom Color has no gamma control. Use Standard or Creator according to the decision path.
HDR desktop looks gray or washed out HDR is enabled during ordinary SDR work, or the range/path is mismatched. Disable Windows HDR for SDR use and verify RGB/full-range output.
HDR highlights clip after changing modes The tone-mapping curve changed. Run Windows HDR Calibration again in the mode you now use and inspect clipping patterns.
Screen edges appear darker than the center CPC and normal OLED brightness-uniformity behavior. Evaluate straight on with uniform content; allow recovery and avoid compensating with a distorted white point.
Dolby Vision and HDR10 do not look alike They may be tone-mapped by different parts of the source/display chain. Compare with the same source settings and consistent monitor HDR behavior.
Profile works on one setup but not another GPU, cable, refresh rate, firmware or HDR mode changed. Restore the original path or create a new profile for the new configuration.

AW3226Q calibration checklist

  • Reset the OSD and warm the panel before evaluation.
  • Calibrate from the centered, normal viewing position with stable uniform content.
  • Use Standard for the factory baseline; remember that its gamma is light.
  • Use Creator for sRGB selection and gamma control, while checking its grayscale trade-off.
  • Do not rely on Custom Color to correct gamma.
  • Set and verify RGB/full range and 10-bit output when the hardware path supports it.
  • For HDR, keep the monitor mode, source format, GPU and cable path fixed during Windows HDR Calibration.
  • Re-run HDR calibration after changing a mode, GPU, cable path or major firmware.
  • Treat angle-dependent tint and temporary edge dimming as possible CPC/panel behavior before changing the white point.
  • Use a colorimeter only when a unit-specific, repeatable ICC workflow justifies the measurement.
