To transfer data from an Android phone to a new OnePlus, start the OnePlus setup and choose the option to copy apps and data from your old phone. Follow the on-screen prompts to connect the phones by cable or wirelessly; if your OnePlus offers Clone Phone, you can also pair the devices by QR code. Start the transfer during setup when possible, because the direct copy option may not be available later.
Before you start
Keep both phones nearby and make sure they have enough charge. You’ll need the old phone’s screen lock, an internet connection, and enough free storage on the OnePlus for the items you want to move. Google says a direct setup transfer can take from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on how much data is copied; that is a possible range, not an average. Set aside time to keep the devices available until the transfer finishes. Google’s Android transfer instructions

How to transfer data during OnePlus setup
- Begin setting up the OnePlus. Follow its initial setup prompts until you are asked whether to copy apps and data from an old device.
- Choose the Android phone option. Pair the phones as the OnePlus and Android prompts direct. Depending on the devices and available equipment, use a compatible cable or the wireless option. Google says both methods support the same data; a cable or adapter must fit the phones’ ports. Google’s copy guide and OnePlus’s transfer guide
- Select what to copy. Choose the available data categories and start the transfer. Keep the phones connected and powered until the OnePlus reports completion.
- Check important items afterward. Open key apps and verify your photos, contacts, messages, and files rather than assuming every item moved.
How to use OnePlus Clone Phone
Clone Phone is a OnePlus migration option, but its availability and screen labels can vary by model. In the Nord N300 manual’s documented flow, the new phone displays a QR code that the old phone scans to pair.
- On the new OnePlus, open Clone Phone, choose “I’m a new phone,” select the old phone type, and follow the prompts.
- On the old phone, install or open Clone Phone if prompted, choose “I’m an old phone,” and scan the QR code shown by the OnePlus.
- Select the data to migrate and start the copy. Keep both phones available until it finishes.
These exact labels and steps are documented for the OnePlus Nord N300; other OnePlus models may use a different flow.
What transfers—and what may need separate attention
In Google’s standard Android setup copy, items that may transfer include apps and some app data, music, photos, videos, contacts saved on the phone or SIM, text messages and their multimedia, most phone settings, wallpaper, and call history. The result depends on the phones and Android versions. Google’s Android copy guide
Google lists these as items that do not copy through that setup route:
- Downloads such as PDFs, and photos, videos, or music saved in hidden folders.
- Apps that were not downloaded from Google Play, and data from apps that do not use Android backup.
- Non-Google accounts and their data, plus contacts or calendars synced through services other than Google.
- Ringtones and certain device settings.
Move excluded files separately or sign back into the relevant accounts and apps. For WhatsApp, Google says chats and data can be restored from the cloud after you sign in and open WhatsApp on the new Android phone, provided WhatsApp backup was enabled on the old phone. Do not treat Clone Phone by itself as a guarantee that WhatsApp chats will transfer.

If you no longer have the old phone: restore a Google backup
During OnePlus setup, sign in to the Google Account used on your old phone and choose its backup when prompted. Restore behavior varies by device and Android version; Google notes that a backup from a newer Android version may not transfer completely to a device running an older version. A restore can take up to 24 hours to finish, which is a possible maximum rather than a typical duration. Google’s switching guide, backup and restore guidance, and backup steps
If the transfer fails or you already set up the OnePlus
- A cable transfer will not start: Unplug and reconnect both ends. Confirm the cable fits both phones; use an adapter only if needed.
- The process stops or the phones disconnect: Recharge, reconnect, and try again. If setup reports a stall, Google says you can stop the process and check what copied.
- Wireless transfer is unavailable or slow: Wi-Fi transfer is supported only on certain devices. Follow the method the phones offer; they may request a cable instead.
- You skipped copying during setup: Some devices offer a “Finish setting up” option or a transfer route in Settings, but availability differs by phone and Android version. If that route is absent, use a Google backup restore if one is available or check the instructions for your OnePlus model.
