Yes, but the method depends on what “unclustered” means. For a permanent multi-server network, run both servers with the same -clusterid and the same shared -ClusterDirOverride directory. If the servers must remain without a cluster ID, transfers can use ARK’s terminal upload/download system when filtering and prevention settings allow it; sharing the SavedArks directory creates the so-called “fake cluster” behavior that exposes those buttons.

First decide which transfer model you need
ARK uses two different workflows that are often confused. A normal Cross-ARK cluster gives players a live Travel to another server option. A server pair with no cluster ID can instead use tribute-data upload and download, provided the administrator has not disabled the relevant transfers. The second arrangement is commonly described as a “fake cluster” when the servers share their SavedArks directory.

Choose the first model if you control launch parameters and can provide shared storage. Choose the second only after confirming exactly how your host exposes the transfer directories and flags.
What administrators must configure for a real cluster
1. Stop the servers and make backups
Stop both instances cleanly before changing launch parameters. Copy each server’s save files and the cluster directory to a separate backup location. A character transfer is a migration operation: if the destination already contains a survivor for that player, downloading can overwrite that survivor’s data. Keep a backup until the player has spawned successfully on the destination and the transfer has been checked.

2. Give both servers the same cluster ID
Add an identical -clusterid value to both launch commands. The ARK Official Community Wiki’s server-configuration guidance states that the ID must match for servers to see one another. Use a private, distinctive value rather than a generic word. Unrelated servers using the same ID can appear in the same travel list and pollute one another’s server discovery.
3. Point both servers to one shared cluster directory
Set -ClusterDirOverride to the same directory from both instances. On separate physical machines, that path must resolve to shared storage that both processes can read and write; two folders that merely have the same name are not equivalent. A matching ID without a shared directory is the classic misleading configuration: the servers can appear in the list, but the destination cannot find the uploaded survivor, item, or tame data.

Replace the map, session name, cluster name, and path with your own values. The important relationship is that <CLUSTER_NAME> and <PATH> resolve identically on both servers. Preserve the path’s quoting when it contains spaces.

5. Check transfer restrictions before testing
Review the server configuration for noTributeDownloads, PreventDownloadSurvivors, PreventUploadSurvivors, and the corresponding item and dino prevention flags. These settings can block an otherwise correct cluster. Do not enable -NoTransferFromFiltering if your setup depends on filtering-based upload and download behavior. The exact combination should be documented for every server in the pair so a later restart does not silently change what can move.
6. Test with a disposable survivor
After both servers are online, join the source, open a transfer terminal, and confirm that the destination appears. Perform a test with no valuable inventory or tames. Verify that the character can be downloaded or traveled, that the destination save is written, and that the survivor spawns before announcing the setup as ready.
How to keep the servers unclustered
Some administrators deliberately avoid a cluster ID. ARK’s configuration documentation describes upload/download as still possible when no cluster ID is set and transfer filtering has not been disabled. In this mode, the player uses tribute data rather than the live cross-server travel list.
Leave filtering behavior available
Do not assume that removing -clusterid automatically enables transfers. The upload and download controls are still governed by the server’s prevention and filtering settings. Confirm that survivor uploads and downloads are allowed, then check the item and dino settings separately if those are part of your plan.
Share the transfer data
The same documentation explains that tribute data is saved in the SavedArks directory. Sharing that directory between servers can create a “fake cluster” in which terminals expose upload and download buttons even though the servers have no cluster ID. On separate hosts, this means arranging shared storage or a provider-supported way to keep the directory synchronized. Do not treat two independent copies as shared data: the destination must be able to read the file produced by the source.

Understand the limitation
This approach is manual. It does not provide the same destination-selection flow as a correctly configured Cross-ARK cluster, and every transfer depends on the shared tribute data being present and readable. If the directory is unavailable, the controls may disappear or the destination may have nothing to download.
Player instructions: upload and download a survivor
Before leaving the source server
- Ask the administrator which mode is active and whether inventory, item, and dino transfers are allowed.
- Empty the survivor’s inventory unless the administrator has explicitly confirmed the item-transfer rules. Restrictions can differ from survivor-transfer rules.
- Travel to an obelisk, supply crate, terminal, or Tek Transmitter.
- Open the transfer interface and choose the survivor upload option. Wait for the interface to confirm the upload.
- Leave the source server without creating a replacement character. Creating another survivor can make it unclear which character the destination should download.
At the destination
- Join the destination server using the same account that uploaded the survivor.
- At the character screen, choose Download Survivor when the servers are using upload/download mode.
- If the administrators configured a real cluster, choose Travel to another server instead and select the destination from the travel list.
- Spawn into the destination and check the survivor’s level, engrams, location, and any permitted transferred data.
- Only after that check should you move additional items or tames. If something is missing, stop and contact the administrator rather than uploading another copy.
CrossARK Transfers documentation identifies this terminal-based system as the mechanism for moving survivors, items, and tames between ARKs. Whether each category is available is controlled by the server’s transfer settings.
Why “Download Survivor” is missing
You are using the live cluster workflow
In a correctly configured cluster, the expected control is usually Travel to another server, not a separate download button on the character screen. Ask the administrator whether the server pair was intentionally configured with matching cluster parameters.
The servers have no shared transfer directory
If the servers have the same cluster ID but different -ClusterDirOverride locations, they may still appear to one another. That visibility does not prove that tribute data is being exchanged. The administrator must point both processes at the same readable and writable location, then restart and retest.
A prevention flag blocks the action
PreventDownloadSurvivors, PreventUploadSurvivors, noTributeDownloads, and related item or dino flags can remove or disable controls. The administrator should inspect the effective configuration rather than changing random client settings.

Filtering was disabled in a way the setup does not support
If the setup relies on filtering-based upload/download behavior, enabling -NoTransferFromFiltering can defeat that design. Remove the conflicting option or redesign the transfer policy deliberately; do not mix documented modes without testing.
The fake-cluster directory is not shared
For a no-ID arrangement, the terminal buttons depend on tribute data in SavedArks. If each server writes to its own local copy, the destination cannot see the source upload. Verify the mount, permissions, and path presented to both server processes.

Survivor transfer is not the same as item or dino transfer. The administrator can allow one category while preventing another, and the corresponding flags should be checked individually. This is why the safest player procedure starts with an empty inventory and a confirmation from the administrator before attempting to move equipment.
Terminals used for the operation include obelisks, supply crates, standard terminals, and Tek Transmitters. The interface location does not override server restrictions. A successful survivor upload therefore does not prove that every item or tame is eligible to follow it.
Data-safety rules for a multi-server migration
- Back up the source saves, destination saves, and shared cluster or
SavedArksdata before the first real transfer. - Transfer only one survivor at a time. ARK’s configuration documentation states that only one survivor can be uploaded at once.
- Do not let a player create a new destination survivor while an upload is waiting to be downloaded.
- Keep the backup until the destination survivor has spawned and the administrator has confirmed the save was written.
- Use a private cluster ID. A generic ID can make unrelated servers appear together and risks confusing the travel list.
- Record every launch parameter and restriction flag so a restart reproduces the tested configuration.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The destination is listed, but the survivor cannot be downloaded
Check the shared directory first. Matching IDs only establish visibility; both servers also need access to the same transfer-data location. Then verify that uploads and downloads are not blocked by prevention flags.
The upload succeeds, but the destination shows no survivor
In upload/download mode, inspect whether both instances can read the same SavedArks data. In a real cluster, compare the resolved -ClusterDirOverride path on both machines. A path typo, an unmounted share, or separate local folders produces this symptom.

Players can move survivors but not equipment
Review the item-transfer settings separately from PreventUploadSurvivors and PreventDownloadSurvivors. The survivor category can be permitted while item or dino categories remain blocked.
Several unrelated servers appear together
Change the cluster ID to a unique value on every server that should form a group. A cluster ID is a namespace, not a password; reusing a generic value can combine server lists unintentionally.
A player reports that an older destination survivor disappeared
Downloading a survivor can overwrite that player’s existing destination survivor data. Stop further transfers, preserve the backups, and restore only after the administrator has identified the correct save state.

Hosting providers can simplify the operational side of running two compatible servers, but their control panels may use different names for cluster IDs, shared directories, and transfer restrictions. Confirm the actual launch arguments, storage behavior, backup policy, and transfer flags with the provider before relying on the setup.
