What “no thumbnails” actually means
When you upload an image, WordPress stores the original in the uploads directory and normally asks an image-processing library to create additional dimensions. A typical symptom is that the original appears in the Media Library, while expected files such as a -150x150 crop, medium size, large size, or a custom theme image are absent.
That symptom has three materially different explanations:

- Processing failed: GD or Imagick is unavailable, the upload directory cannot be written, the PHP process ran out of memory, or a conversion timed out.
- The size does not exist: the dimensions were removed from Settings > Media, a theme or plugin no longer registers the custom size, or the active theme requests a name that was never defined.
- The size was added later: changing dimensions or adding a new
add_image_size()declaration affects future uploads. Existing attachments keep their current files until you regenerate them.
Confirm the symptom before changing anything: open one affected attachment, locate its original in the uploads directory, and compare the files that your theme or editor expects. A missing derivative is not proof of a server failure if that derivative was never registered.
Start with Site Health
Site Health exposes the server details that are otherwise easy to guess incorrectly. In the dashboard, open Tools > Site Health > Info, then inspect the following sections.

Media Handling
Review the reported GD version and supported formats, Imagick availability and version, PHP variables, and upload limits. These values tell you which library WordPress can actually use, rather than which extensions your host says are installed. If neither a usable GD implementation nor Imagick is available, ask the host to install or enable one before testing again.
Filesystem Permissions
Check the uploads path and other directories used during image work. WordPress’s Site Health documentation states: “The Filesystem Permissions section shows whether WordPress is able to write to the directories it needs access to.” If the uploads directory is not writable, the original may be present while derivative files cannot be saved. Correct ownership and permissions with the host or server administrator; repeatedly re-uploading will not solve a write-permission failure.
PHP and server information
Record the PHP memory limit, maximum upload size, maximum post size, and execution time shown by Site Health. Also note the WordPress version, active theme, and installed plugins. Keep these values with the time of the test so a host can correlate them with PHP or web-server logs.
Check image-processing capacity
Thumbnail creation is an image conversion job. A large source can require substantially more memory than its compressed file size suggests, because the library expands pixels in memory before resizing or encoding them. PHP’s manual warns that image functions are very memory intensive, and the WordPress Hosting Handbook explains that ImageMagick is required by the Imagick extension. WordPress can also request additional memory for image-processing work, but the request cannot overcome a restrictive host-level limit.

Review the variables that can stop a conversion
memory_limit: insufficient memory can terminate GD or Imagick while decoding or resizing a large image.- Upload and post limits: these can reject the original before processing starts, even when the browser appears to finish uploading.
- Execution time: a slow conversion may exceed the PHP or web-server timeout.
- Source dimensions and format: very large dimensions, animated files, and unusual encodings increase work or require format support that is absent.
Do not apply a universal “minimum megabytes” rule. The required capacity depends on pixel dimensions, color depth, format, the selected library, concurrent requests, and the host’s configuration. A host should raise limits based on your actual files and monitor the resulting CPU and memory load.

Understand the 2560-pixel behavior
WordPress documents a default big_image_size_threshold of 2560 pixels. This is a behavior setting that can cause an oversized upload to be scaled before other sizes are generated; it is not a guarantee that a 2560-pixel image will process successfully on every server. A constrained server can still fail on smaller files, while a well-provisioned server may handle larger ones.
Use logs as evidence
When available, inspect PHP and web-server logs for memory exhaustion, timeout, missing-function, or permission errors at the exact time of an upload. A log entry that names GD, Imagick, ImageMagick, or a filesystem path is more useful than disabling plugins at random. If logs are unavailable to you, request the relevant entries from your host.
Verify Media settings and registered sizes
Review dashboard dimensions
Open Settings > Media. Check the thumbnail, medium, and large width and height values, and whether thumbnail cropping is enabled. WordPress’s Media Settings documentation notes: “You will need php-gd (GD graphics library) installed on your server to use this feature.” The settings define what WordPress should request for new attachments; they do not rebuild files that already exist.

A dimension change can create a different set of files on future uploads, while templates that still reference an old size name may continue to show missing-image behavior.
Inspect the active theme and plugins
Custom sizes are normally declared with add_image_size(). A theme may also need add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' ) for the relevant post type. For example:
add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' );
add_image_size( 'hero-wide', 1600, 900, true );The exact declaration is site-specific. Check that the code runs for the active theme, that the requested size name matches the template, and that a plugin has not removed or filtered the size list. A theme can request hero-wide while the site registers only a differently named size; no amount of regeneration can create an unregistered size.
Why old images remain unchanged
WordPress does not retroactively revisit every attachment when you alter Media settings or add a theme size. Existing originals therefore continue to lack the new derivative until you run a regeneration job. This distinction explains why a newly uploaded test image can work while older posts still show missing thumbnails.

Run a controlled upload test
After correcting an obvious server or settings issue, use a small, ordinary file to isolate the remaining cause.
- Prepare a small RGB JPEG or PNG with conventional dimensions. Avoid animation, uncommon color profiles, and very large pixel counts for this test.
- Upload it through Media > Add New while logged in as an administrator.
- Confirm that the original appears and inspect the uploads directory for the expected derivatives.
- Compare the result with one very large or unusual file that previously failed.
If the small file succeeds but the large or unusual file fails, resource use or format/library support is the likely boundary. If every file fails, return to GD/Imagick availability, permissions, PHP limits, and code that filters image-size generation. Keep the successful test file and timestamp; they provide a reproducible baseline for your host.
Fix the underlying server or filesystem problem
When GD or Imagick is missing
Ask the hosting provider to enable a working GD graphics library or the Imagick PHP extension backed by ImageMagick, and to confirm the formats your site needs. The provider should verify the extension for the PHP version actually serving WordPress, not only for a command-line PHP binary. Recheck Tools > Site Health > Info after the change.
When uploads are not writable
Have the host correct ownership and permissions for the WordPress uploads path and any temporary directory used by PHP. Avoid making the entire site world-writable as a shortcut. The correct fix depends on the web-server user, PHP handler, and hosting panel. Once corrected, upload a small test image before attempting a bulk rebuild.

Share the failing file’s dimensions, format, and log message with the host. They may need to raise memory or execution limits, move image work to a better-sized PHP worker, or recommend smaller source dimensions. Increasing limits without monitoring can make concurrent requests compete for RAM, so schedule heavy work away from traffic peaks.
When a format is unsupported
Use a conventional JPEG or PNG as a diagnostic, then confirm whether your chosen GD or ImageMagick build supports the production format. Animated or unusual files can require more memory and may not produce every derivative even when ordinary images do.
Regenerate thumbnails that were missing
Regeneration is a repair step after the cause is fixed. It cannot compensate for a missing library, unwritable directory, or unregistered size.

Use WP-CLI when shell access is available
From the WordPress installation directory, administrators can rebuild all registered sizes:
wp media regenerate --yesTo rebuild only the registered size named thumbnail:
wp media regenerate --image_size=thumbnail --yesWordPress Developer Resources describes this command as: “Regenerates thumbnails for one or more attachments.” The --image_size selector limits the operation to that size; it does not create a size that the active site no longer registers.
Use a dashboard regeneration tool when necessary
A vetted thumbnail-regeneration plugin can provide a dashboard alternative for administrators without shell access. Choose one that lets you select a subset or size when possible, and verify that it is compatible with your WordPress version and active theme. The tool still depends on the same PHP image library, memory, CPU, and write permissions.
Protect production sites
- Back up the database and uploads before a bulk operation.
- Run a small subset first and confirm the files and front-end URLs.
- Schedule the full job during a low-traffic period.
- Watch PHP memory, CPU, error logs, and disk space while it runs.
- Stop the job if errors escalate; fix the server cause before resuming.
Regeneration can be expensive because each attachment may be decoded and encoded repeatedly. A successful subset is evidence that the path works, not proof that the entire library will complete within one request or one maintenance window.
What changes in WordPress 7.1
WordPress 7.1 introduces client-side media processing with WebAssembly and libvips in supported browsers. Resizing and format conversion can therefore move away from PHP, reducing server CPU and memory pressure during an upload.
This is not a universal replacement for server-side processing. Unsupported browsers, insufficient device resources, or disabled client-side processing fall back to traditional GD or Imagick on the server. A host-side fix remains necessary whenever fallback is used, and it is still required for regeneration jobs performed on the server. Test with the browsers your editors actually use rather than assuming that the new path applies to every upload.
Choose the remedy by scope and risk

Common failure patterns and their fixes
The original exists, but no derivative exists for any upload
Start with Site Health rather than changing theme code. A missing library or unwritable uploads directory affects every file. Confirm the small-image test only after those checks.
Only a custom hero or crop is missing
Inspect the active theme’s add_image_size() declaration and the template’s requested name. If the size was added after the media library was populated, regenerate after confirming the declaration is active.
New uploads work, old posts do not
The processing path is probably fixed; the old attachments simply predate the current dimensions or theme registration. Run a controlled regeneration, beginning with the affected size or a small attachment set.
Regeneration stops partway through
Check the log and the attachment at which it stopped. A repeatable failure on one very large or unusual file points to resource or format pressure. A failure at a consistent filesystem path points to permissions or disk space. Do not repeatedly restart a bulk job without addressing the recorded error.
The browser reports that the server cannot process the image
Use a small RGB JPEG or PNG to distinguish a general server problem from a file-specific one. Then inspect Site Health and logs for the library, memory, timeout, and permission conditions described above. On WordPress 7.1, also determine whether the editor’s browser supports client-side processing or has fallen back to the server.
Prevent future missing thumbnails
- Keep GD or Imagick enabled for the PHP version serving the site, and verify it after hosting migrations.
- Monitor uploads-directory permissions and available disk space.
- Document Media dimensions and every custom size registered by the active theme or essential plugins.
- Test a representative small image after changing PHP versions, themes, or image libraries.
- Set an upload workflow that keeps source dimensions appropriate for your server and editorial needs.
- Back up before bulk regeneration and record the command, date, and selected size.
- Keep WordPress, themes, and plugins compatible so that size registration and media processing filters are not silently changed.
The reliable workflow is therefore: identify whether the size is registered, verify processing and write access in Site Health, test with a small ordinary image, correct the server or code issue, and regenerate only after the path succeeds. That order prevents a regeneration command from masking the real failure.
