Yes, in some cases—but it depends on whether the person is taking over service at the same address or you are moving to a new home. For a change of financial responsibility at the current address, AT&T has a separate billing-responsibility transfer process. A move to a different address follows AT&T’s move-service process instead.
First, identify what “transfer” means
“Wi-Fi” usually means the AT&T home internet subscription in this question, not just the wireless signal or the router. AT&T distinguishes changing who is responsible for an existing account from moving service to a new address.

| Your situation | AT&T process | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Another person is taking over at the same home | Transfer billing responsibility | The service address stays the same, and all internet, TV, or digital phone services at that address must transfer together. |
| You are moving your own service | Move AT&T service | Check service availability at the new address and follow AT&T’s instructions for installation and equipment. |
| A new resident is not using a billing-responsibility transfer | Check availability and open a new account | AT&T’s moving guidance directs a new resident to establish service in their own name. |
AT&T’s moving page says internet service is linked to the account holder and cannot be transferred through the move process. That does not mean there is no way to change responsibility at the same home: AT&T separately describes a billing-responsibility transfer for that situation.

- Current owner: Go to att.com/tobr, sign in, select “Start transfer,” and follow the prompts. The account owner initiates the request.
- Tell the recipient which email address you used. AT&T sends the recipient an email or text with a link and verification code.
- Recipient: Open the link, verify identity, choose to accept, review the service details and terms, and complete the prompts.
- Confirm completion: The recipient should review the resulting account and charges. The first bill may include partial-month charges or credits.
AT&T’s support instructions say the account must be active and not past due. The initiator page says it must have been active for at least 60 days. A combined wireless-and-home-services account may require AT&T’s help; wireless service must be separated from other services before an online request.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Check eligibility and service limits before starting
- The existing account owner must authorize the transfer.
- The recipient must meet AT&T’s minimum age requirement: 18 in most states, 19 in Alabama, or 21 in Puerto Rico.
- The recipient must keep the home services at the existing service address. If more than one home service is there, AT&T requires all internet, TV, and digital phone services to transfer together.
- AT&T may require the recipient to pass a satisfactory credit evaluation. Depending on that evaluation, an advance payment may be required.
What changes for the new account holder
The recipient takes on financial and contractual responsibility for the services accepted, including applicable one-time and recurring charges and equipment obligations. If service is later canceled, the account holder may need to return equipment or pay applicable non-return fees.
Do not assume the existing plan price, features, discounts, or promotions will continue. AT&T says these may change depending on service terms and offer eligibility, and discounts or offers may not transfer. Review the terms and charges presented during acceptance before agreeing.

If the person is moving to a different address
A change of address is not the same as handing an account to another person. The customer moving their service should check availability at the destination and arrange the move through AT&T. AT&T will advise whether self-installation is available or a technician is needed, and whether existing equipment should be returned. Bring equipment only as AT&T directs; do not assume it can simply be moved to another person’s account or address.
If a new resident is taking over the home but not using the billing-responsibility process, AT&T’s moving guidance says to check availability and open a new account.

Online access is not account ownership
Being able to manage an account online does not by itself make someone financially responsible for it. AT&T treats the account owner as financially responsible and lists primary and secondary online access as separate roles. If the goal is to transfer responsibility for bills and contractual obligations, use the billing-responsibility process rather than merely adding online access.
AT&T’s support article for billing responsibility was last updated April 29, 2025, and its account-management article was last updated February 26, 2026. Check the current AT&T instructions and terms when beginning a transfer.
