Moving a .UK domain out of Hostinger is a registrar transfer, and the method you need depends on which official instruction applies to your account. Hostinger’s current help article tells the domain owner to change an IPS tag in the Hostinger dashboard. Nominet’s .UK Inter-registrar Transfer Policy, version 2026-03, instead describes a Transfer Authorisation Code (TAC) that the losing registrar provides and the gaining registrar submits. The two workflows are not interchangeable, so confirm with Hostinger and your new registrar which one they support before you authorise anything. Once an IPS-tag change is confirmed, Hostinger says the transfer starts immediately and cannot be undone.
First, decide whether you need to move the domain
A registrar transfer moves the registration: who manages the domain, its renewal, and its DNS settings from the registrar’s side. If you only want your website hosted somewhere else while the domain stays registered at Hostinger, you may not need a transfer at all. Hostinger recommends changing nameservers in that case. It describes the nameserver change as free and typically effective within 24 hours, which is Hostinger’s own estimate rather than a guarantee. DNS propagation and the new host’s setup can add time.

Choose a transfer only if the registration itself needs to leave Hostinger, for example because you want to manage the domain, billing and renewals with another company.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore you start
- The domain must be active. Hostinger’s guide says so for its IPS-tag route.
- Use the account owner. Hostinger says only the actual owner may change the IPS tag, not an Access Manager user.
- Choose a gaining registrar that supports .uk. Hostinger’s article covers .uk and related suffixes such as .co.uk and .org.uk, but confirm your specific suffix with the new registrar.
- Get the receiving registrar’s current .UK transfer instructions and its exact identifier or code. Do not guess an IPS tag.
- Do not enter Hostinger’s inbound tag, AXIDOMAINS, for an outgoing transfer. That value is for moving a .uk domain into Hostinger.
- Note your current expiry date and any outstanding charges at Hostinger, and ask the new registrar how it will handle the expiry date.
Which transfer method applies
The two official sources describe different mechanisms. The table sets out what each one says, so you can see which one matches the instructions you have been given.

| Point | Hostinger current .UK help article | Nominet .UK Inter-registrar Transfer Policy, version 2026-03 |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Change the IPS tag in the dashboard to the exact tag from the new registrar | Transfer Authorisation Code requested from the losing registrar and supplied to the gaining registrar |
| Who acts | The actual owner, in the Hostinger dashboard | The registrant asks the losing registrar for the code; the gaining registrar submits the transfer request |
| Locks | Domain lock must be switched off before changing the IPS tag | Losing registrar removes eligible registrar-set transfer locks |
| Deadline for the code or lock removal | Not stated in the help article | Within five days of a proper request, at no charge |
| Code validity | Not applicable | An unused code expires after 14 days |
| Registry processing | Confirmation begins the transfer immediately and cannot be undone | If the lock and code checks pass, the registry moves the domain immediately |
| Timing estimate | Hostinger’s general transfer-out guide gives up to seven days for an ordinary domain transfer | Registry step is immediate; gaining-registrar setup time not stated |
Hostinger’s general transfer-out guide says .uk is an exception to its EPP-code route for other extensions, and points .uk domains to the IPS-tag change. That supports the dashboard instruction but does not reconcile it with Nominet’s newer policy text. Ask Hostinger support, in writing if possible, whether the IPS-tag change or a TAC applies to your domain and to your chosen registrar, and keep the reply with your records.
Route A: IPS-tag change (Hostinger’s documented steps)
Use this route only after Hostinger confirms it applies to your domain and the new registrar supports it.

- Log in as the account owner and switch off the domain lock for the .UK domain.
- Go to Domains, then Manage, then Domain Overview.
- Select Transfer, then IPS tag, then Change.
- Enter the exact tag supplied by the new registrar. Check it character by character.
- Acknowledge that Hostinger will no longer manage the domain.
- Confirm. Hostinger says this authorises the transfer and starts it at once.
Expected result: the domain leaves Hostinger’s management and the receiving registrar takes over the transfer process. Hostinger warns that an incorrect tag can disrupt the transfer, and confirmation cannot be reversed from Hostinger’s side, so verify the tag before the final confirmation.

Route B: Transfer Authorisation Code (Nominet’s policy)
Use this route if Hostinger or your registrar confirms that the TAC process applies to your domain.

- Adapter for converting a USB 3.1 Type-C port to a RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet port
- Integrated Ethernet port supports 10M/100M/1000M bandwidth; offers instant Internet connection to the host
- USB-C input allows for reversible plugging; offers complete compatibility with current computers and devices; compatible with Nintendo Switch

- Ask Hostinger to remove any registrar-set transfer lock and to provide a Transfer Authorisation Code for the .UK domain. Under Nominet’s policy, the losing registrar must do this within five days of a proper request, at no charge.
- Give the code to the gaining registrar. Unused codes expire after 14 days, so request a new one if the window closes.
- The gaining registrar submits the transfer request. Nominet’s registry checks that no blocking lock exists and that the code is valid.
- If both checks pass, the registry moves the domain immediately. Your new registrar then completes its own account setup.
Nominet’s policy does not describe a dashboard step for the code. Request it through Hostinger support unless Hostinger’s own instructions state otherwise.

Timing, renewal and charges
| Item | What the sources say | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Overall timing | Hostinger estimates up to seven days for an ordinary domain transfer. Nominet’s registry step is immediate once the checks pass. | Plan for the gaining registrar’s own processing time, which the sources do not state. |
| Renewal | Under Nominet’s policy, a transfer can happen without renewal if the gaining registrar supports it, except where the domain is in the auto-renew grace period. A requested renewal with transfer is also possible within registry term limits. Hostinger’s guide on inbound transfers says .UK domains are not renewed automatically and keep their existing expiry date; that describes transfers into Hostinger. | Ask the new registrar whether it offers a transfer without renewal and whether it will keep your current expiry date. |
| Charges | Nominet allows the gaining registrar to charge for an incoming transfer. Hostinger’s outgoing charges are not stated in the sources. | Ask the new registrar for its transfer fee and any renewal price before you start. |
After the transfer
- Confirm that the domain appears in the receiving registrar’s account.
- Check the nameservers. If you are moving hosting too, point the domain to your new host’s nameservers.
- Review DNSSEC settings with the new registrar, since a mismatch can make the domain unreachable.
- Confirm the expiry date and renewal settings.
- Recreate or verify DNS records, including mail records. Neither Hostinger’s guide nor Nominet’s policy says a registrar transfer carries over website files, mailboxes or DNS records, so check these separately.
If the transfer does not complete
- The IPS tag was rejected or the transfer stalled: check that the tag matches the receiving registrar’s current identifier exactly, then contact that registrar. Hostinger warns that an incorrect tag can disrupt the transfer.
- The transfer will not start: confirm the domain lock is off and the domain is active. Under the TAC route, confirm that the losing registrar has removed any registrar-set lock.
- The code is rejected: it may have expired. Unused codes expire after 14 days, so request a new one from Hostinger.
- The receiving registrar refuses the domain: confirm that it supports your .UK suffix and transfer method before you start again.
