The Breville Eye Q Auto can make sensor toasting practical in an ordinary kitchen, but only if you accept a short learning curve and check the result with your own bread. Breville says its optical sensors follow the color of the toast and stop at the shade you select. The one independent test of the two-slice model that we could identify, CHOICE’s January 2026 review, reported that it reached the target shade after a few attempts but left uneven spots on white toast. That is a single, bounded observation, not a verdict on every loaf.
Breville sells the sensor toaster under the Eye Q Auto name, with a two-slice model (BTA850) and a four-slice model (BTA870). This review covers both, with the caveat that most independent evidence concerns the two-slice version.

How the Eye Q sensors decide when toast is done
According to Breville’s US product page for the BTA870, the optical sensors scan the toast’s color ten times each second and end the cycle when it reaches the shade you chose. Ten scans per second is the manufacturer’s specification. It is not a figure that an independent lab has confirmed.
The toaster offers seven shade options and automatically lowers and raises the bread. CHOICE describes the lowering and raising movement as more gradual than a conventional lever, and notes that it may take some getting used to. Expect the first few slices to be a calibration exercise rather than a quick start.

Modes and what each one does
Breville’s modes do different jobs, and the names differ slightly between sources. Check the control panel on your unit before relying on a label.
Eye Q Toast Mode
This is the default for most bread. The sensors watch the color and stop at the shade you select. It is the mode the product is built around.
Sourdough Mode
The instruction book describes this as an adjusted sensor algorithm for sourdough and other artisan breads, which often brown unevenly because of their thicker, denser crumb and irregular surface. Use it when Eye Q Toast Mode gives you pale centers or burnt crusts with thick sourdough.

- AUTOMATIC CONTROL WITH LIFT & LOOK: Touch a button and your bread is automatically lowered into 2 slot toaster, then lifted during the toasting cycle to monitor progress and lifted at the end to deliver toasting precision
Timer Mode
Timer Mode is conventional timed toasting with the sensor disabled. It is the right choice for foods that the sensors are not designed to read as bread, and it gives you a fallback if the color sensing is not behaving with a particular loaf. The instruction book does not describe which foods suit it best, so use it as a fallback rather than a default for pastries.
Bagel, crumpet and English muffin control
This separate control sends more power to the outer heating elements. The instruction book directs you to place the cut surface that needs more heat facing outward. The US product page lists this function as Bagel Mode, alongside A Bit More and Timer Mode. The Australia and New Zealand instruction book names it Bagel/Crumpet/English Muffin, so the label on your unit may differ from the one in your manual.
Placement: the setup step most buyers miss
The sensors only work when the bread sits in front of a marked sensor slot. If bread is not positioned in front of one, the toaster cannot read it, and you will get toast that does not match the shade you selected. Follow these checks before the first use:

- Run a test slice of your usual bread on Eye Q Toast Mode and compare it with your target shade before toasting for a crowd.
- For bagels, crumpets and English muffins, place the cut surface that needs more heat facing outward, as the manual directs.
Two-slice or four-slice: which model fits your kitchen
Choose the model by household size, counter space and how often you toast at the same time. The table below shows what the sources establish for each model. Where a value is not stated, we say so rather than estimate it.
| Feature | BTA850 (Eye Q Auto, 2-slice) | BTA870 (Eye Q Auto, 4-slice) |
|---|---|---|
| Slice capacity | 2 slices (Breville support catalog) | 4 slices (Breville US product page) |
| Price | Not stated in the sources reviewed | $399.95 on Breville’s US product page at the time of checking; prices change, so confirm before buying |
| Shade options | Not stated for this model | 7 (Breville US product page) |
| Sensor scan rate | Not stated for this model | 10 scans per second (Breville’s claim, US product page) |
| Independent testing | CHOICE tested this version in its January 2026 review | Not stated; no independent test identified |
A four-slice model suits households that toast breakfast for several people at once. The two-slice version fits smaller kitchens, but it is the only model with an independent test on record, so it is the one where the published findings apply most directly.
What independent testing found
CHOICE tested the two-slice model on white bread and other items. It reported that, after a few attempts to reach the target shade, white toast showed uneven spots. The toast remained edible. CHOICE tested one model and one loaf type in its review, so treat the result as a reported observation from that test. It does not establish that every loaf, every shade setting or every unit will behave the same way.

CHOICE’s review also described the sensor-based mode in a way worth quoting exactly: “The Breville Eye Q Auto, on the other hand, dispenses with the idea of time (almost).” That is the reviewer’s characterization. The product still includes Timer Mode, so the sensors do not replace timed toasting entirely.
Claims to read with care
- “The first automatic toaster that watches the toast so you don’t have to.” This is Breville’s marketing language. We have not independently verified the “first” claim.
- More than 10 years of development. CHOICE relayed this figure from Breville. It is a company claim, not an independently verified duration.
- Ten scans per second and seven shade options. These come from Breville’s specifications on its US product page for the BTA870. Treat them as specifications, not independent measurements.
Availability and buying considerations
Pricing and availability vary by market and date. Breville’s US product page lists the four-slice BTA870 at $399.95, but no price was stated for the two-slice model in the sources reviewed. Tom’s Guide, in its independent review, reported an Australian Amazon listing for the two-slice model at the time of publication. Check current stock and price in your own country before you buy.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Before buying, consider these points:
- Whether you mostly toast sliced bread, which is where the sensors have the most evidence behind them, or pastries and snacks, where the sources do not establish how the sensor modes perform.
- Whether you can accept a few calibration slices and the more gradual lowering and raising movement CHOICE described.
- Whether you need an even, edge-to-edge shade on white bread, given CHOICE’s uneven-spot observation.
- Whether your counter and outlet arrangement suits a four-slice body compared with a two-slice body.
Who the Eye Q Auto suits, and who should look elsewhere
The Eye Q Auto is a good fit if you toast mixed breads daily, want to avoid guessing timer settings, and are willing to spend a few slices learning where the sensors need the bread placed. It makes the most sense for sliced breads, with Sourdough Mode for artisan loaves and Timer Mode as a fallback.
Best Value
- The Breville Die-Cast Long Slot Smart Toaster has extra long slice capacity for bread types that need longer slots; One touch auto lowering or lifting allows for gentle handling; 'Lift & Look' monitors progress; 'A Bit More' adds time to toasting cycle
- INNOVATIVE FEATURES: Check on toast or add extra time without interrupting the toasting cycle with 'Lift & Look' and 'A Bit More'; Looking for a bagel toaster? The Bagel function ensures even heat for even toasting; Unfreeze your favorites with Defrost
- EXTRA LONG 4 SLICE CAPACITY: The long slot toaster features a 4 slice capacity; Longer slots also meet the demands of larger artisanal bread, thick bagels and dense pastries; Sleek design fits well in busy kitchens where space is at a premium
- VARIABLE BROWNING CONTROL: Stainless steel smart toaster lets you toast to your preferred brownness; Monitor progress with the LED indicator to see how much more time remains in the toasting cycle
- AUTOMATIC CONTROL WITH LIFT & LOOK: Touch a button and your bread is automatically lowered into 4 slice toaster, then lifted during the toasting cycle to monitor progress and lifted at the end to deliver toasting precision
It is a weaker choice if you need consistent color across every slice of white bread, or if you mainly toast pastries and frozen snacks, since no independent evidence here shows how the sensors handle them. In those cases, plan on Timer Mode or compare with a conventional timed toaster before committing.
Limits of this review
Independent testing of the Eye Q Auto is limited. We identified no systematic comparison against competing sensor-controlled toasters, so we cannot say how the Eye Q performs relative to other models. The instruction book used here is the Australia and New Zealand edition, so check the manual for your region for electrical and safety details. Prices, stock and listings change, so verify them at the point of purchase.
With those limits in mind, the Eye Q Auto earns a place on the shortlist for people who want sensor-led toasting, provided they check placement and test their own bread before relying on it.
