Choose the workflow that matches your task

These are separate features. Live Transcribe is for speech captured as it happens; Gboard is for dictating into a text field. Google describes Gboard voice typing as available in most places where you can type, but not every language is supported (Gboard Help: Type with your voice).

Check whether your Android device supports offline languages
Offline language availability depends on the device and Android version. Google documents multiple-language downloads on selected devices and on all Pixel devices running Android 12 or later. On selected devices running Android 8, 9, 10, or 11, Google documents English for offline use. These are not guarantees that a particular language will be offered on every compatible device: check the available-language indicators in Live Transcribe on the phone you plan to use (Google Android Accessibility Help: Use Live Transcribe).

In the app, open Settings → More settings.

Under Primary language and Secondary language, review the available choices. Download the languages you will need, using the download indicators to confirm which are available on your device.

Open Settings → More settings → Advanced → Offline transcriptions and check the Transcribe offline preference. Live Transcribe enables offline transcription for downloaded languages by default; this setting lets you change that behavior. Keeping it on allows offline mode for downloaded languages even while the device is connected.
When you need a transcript, open Live Transcribe and let it capture the speech. It displays the recognized speech and sound as text on screen; Google’s instructions do not describe it as a tool for selecting and transcribing a prerecorded file. Google Android Accessibility Help says Live Transcribe “automatically enables offline transcription” to provide an uninterrupted transcription experience (Use Live Transcribe; accessed 2026-10-07).

Use Gboard to dictate into a text field

In the app where you want the text, tap a text field to bring up Gboard.

Tap the keyboard’s microphone and speak. The recognized words are entered into that field.

To dictate in a different language manually, enable the relevant languages in Gboard’s keyboard language settings, then select the language using the keyboard’s language control.

Gboard voice typing and Live Transcribe solve different problems: Gboard places dictated text in an editable field, while Live Transcribe shows live transcription on screen. Google’s Gboard guidance does not establish that voice typing can process an imported recording offline (Gboard Help: Type with your voice).

On Pixel 6 and later, Gboard’s advanced voice typing can automatically detect multiple spoken languages; Google says detection is on by default for supported locales. The documented languages are English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. This list is specific to Gboard’s automatic detection, not a list of every language that Live Transcribe can download for offline use. Check the two features separately (Google Gboard Help: Use advanced voice typing features).
Google summarizes the Pixel capability this way: “If you use multiple languages on Pixel 6+, voice typing automatically detects your spoken language seamlessly” (Use advanced voice typing features; accessed 2026-10-07).

What to check if transcription is unavailable

The language is missing from Live Transcribe: Check its language download indicators on your actual phone. Device and Android version affect availability.

Offline transcription does not work: Confirm the language was downloaded while connected and check Settings → More settings → Advanced → Offline transcriptions.

Gboard uses the wrong language: Enable the needed keyboard language and select it manually, unless you are using supported automatic detection on Pixel 6 or later.

You need a transcript of a saved recording: Neither set of Google instructions cited here establishes an offline import-and-transcribe workflow. Live capture or keyboard dictation should not be mistaken for that capability.
