The 2026 Asus Zenbook 14 UX3480QA looks well suited to campus life, but its 8GB configuration is best reserved for lighter study routines. In Tom’s Guide’s test, essay writing, Spotify and a few research tabs worked; performance began stuttering at the seventh tab, and opening a local AI tool froze the system while it processed. That is one reviewer’s test on a 16GB review unit restricted to an 8GB memory profile—not a guarantee of how every 8GB Windows laptop will behave.
Which Asus Zenbook 14 is this?
“Zenbook 14” covers multiple generations and hardware configurations. This article concerns the 2026 UX3480QA, powered by Snapdragon X. ASUS’s October 5, 2026 announcement lists Windows 11 Home, LPDDR5X memory options of 8GB or 16GB, and a 256GB SSD for both US configurations. The announced US MSRPs are $799.99 and $999.99, respectively. ASUS’s announcement

Tom’s Guide reviewer Jason England restricted the review unit’s available memory to 8GB. He reported that he could play Spotify, write an essay in Google Docs and keep a few research tabs open. Stuttering began when he reached the seventh tab. In a separate task, opening AnythingLLM, a local chatbot application, froze the system while it processed. Tom’s Guide review, September 10, 2026

This is a workload warning, not a universal benchmark. The reviewer did not report testing a separately purchased retail 8GB unit; the official lineup does, however, include an 8GB version. Your results will depend on what is open and running, so the useful takeaway is about workload headroom: multiple active apps, many browser tabs and local AI tools are more demanding than a document and a few tabs.
Which memory configuration fits your coursework?
| Configuration | US announced MSRP | Best fit suggested by the evidence | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8GB LPDDR5X | $799.99 (ASUS, October 5, 2026) | Essay-focused work and light research, based on the reviewer’s 8GB-profile test | Confirm the listing is the UX3480QA and includes the 256GB SSD |
| 16GB LPDDR5X | $999.99 (ASUS, October 5, 2026) | More breathing room if your study sessions involve many tabs or several apps at once; this is a workload-based recommendation, not a guarantee | Confirm the regional configuration and storage. ASUS’s US announcement lists 256GB SSD for this version too |
The announced US MSRP difference is $200. Tom’s Guide also discusses UK pricing, where the listed difference was £400, and a UK review configuration with additional SSD storage. Those are different-market details and should not be treated as a like-for-like upgrade price. Actual prices and availability may change.

What else matters for campus use?
ASUS lists a 14-inch 1920 × 1200 OLED display, a 50Wh battery and a weight of 2.87 lb, along with USB-C, USB-A, HDMI and a 3.5mm audio jack. Tom’s Guide praised the display, ergonomics and portability. Those specifications make the laptop easy to assess for carrying between classes and connecting to common peripherals; they do not resolve the memory tradeoff.

Performance figures need their test context
Tom’s Guide reported Geekbench single-core/multi-core scores of 2181/10676 for the Zenbook 14, 2684/7952 for the Dell XPS 13 and 3535/8920 for the MacBook Neo. In its HandBrake 4K-to-1080p transcode, the reported times were 09:48, 10:38 and 09:57, respectively. These are publication-specific test results, not a measure of how quickly every coursework task will run; the memory test remains the more directly relevant evidence for deciding between the Zenbook’s two RAM configurations. How to decide before buying
- Choose 8GB only if your typical session is close to the tested light workload: documents, music and a few research tabs.
- Favor 16GB if you expect to keep many tabs and several applications active together, or use local AI coursework tools.
- Check the full model code, RAM and SSD capacity on the exact regional listing; “Zenbook 14” alone is not enough to identify the hardware.
- Compare the actual price difference in your market rather than applying the US MSRP gap to UK pricing or another configuration.
