TII describes Falcon-ASR as a 1.6-billion-parameter speech-recognition model focused especially on Arabic, including Emirati Arabic. It also supports Modern Standard Arabic, English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, and supports word-level timestamps. The published figures are benchmarks, not a guarantee for your recording, so check the transcript against the audio.
What Falcon-ASR can transcribe
Falcon-ASR is an automatic speech recognition model developed by TII in Abu Dhabi. TII highlights Arabic and Emirati dialect speech, while also listing Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. According to TII, the same model weights handle the listed languages without requiring a language flag, and the output is transcribed in the language spoken. In practical terms, the published description is that you do not need to select one of those supported languages before using the model.

That language list does not establish how the model behaves when speakers switch languages within a recording. A meeting with Arabic and English turns, or a speaker who inserts words from another language, is not the same thing as a recording entirely in one listed language. If your audio includes code-switching, treat the result as something to verify rather than assuming every switch will be recognized correctly. TII’s language list is a statement of support; it does not give a separate accuracy figure for mixed-language audio.

TII identifies this as useful for aligning text with audio or video. That feature can help when reviewing a passage, locating a spoken word, or preparing timed text, but timestamp support does not by itself guarantee precise subtitle timing. Check the alignment against the audio when timing matters, especially at speaker changes or where speech is rapid or overlapping.

TII says Falcon-ASR’s training and evaluation included background noise, overlapping speech, music, room reverberation, telephone effects, and variation in speaking speed and pitch. This matters because those conditions commonly occur in real recordings, but exposure to them is not a promise of accuracy in every noisy room, phone call, or multi-speaker discussion. The model’s dialect focus and the condition of the recording should both inform your expectations.
How to try Falcon-ASR
- Open TII’s Falcon-ASR introduction. Follow the Hugging Face demo link provided there; TII points readers to that demo as the way to try the model. Start from TII’s page so you are using the destination it identifies rather than assuming a similarly named service is the official route.
- Use the demo to explore transcription. TII invites people to try their own recordings, but its official material does not document the demo’s controls, supported file formats, upload-size limits, or data-handling and retention terms. Check the demo’s current interface and terms before uploading. Do not assume a particular file extension, maximum duration, or account requirement unless the current interface states it.
- Choose a representative recording. For an initial suitability check, use audio that reflects the speech you expect to process: the dialect or register, number of speakers, and recording environment. A clean single-speaker sample may be useful for a first look, but it cannot tell you how the model will handle a noisy phone recording or overlapping discussion. TII does not prescribe a test-sample length or a particular recording setup.
- Review the generated text while listening. Compare the transcript with the original recording rather than judging it from text alone. Pay particular attention to dialect expressions, names, numbers, dates, technical terms, overlapping speech, and any language switches. These details can carry the meaning of a sentence, even when the rest of the passage reads smoothly.
- Check word timing if you need it. Timestamps are a supported feature, but confirm their alignment against the audio before using them for subtitles or another timing-sensitive task. Review the start and end of passages and any point where the speaker changes, rather than assuming every word boundary is exact.
- Record what you learn from the test. If you are comparing systems or deciding whether to use Falcon-ASR for repeated work, keep the same representative recordings and review criteria for each trial. Note whether errors cluster around particular dialect expressions, speakers, or recording conditions. This gives you a more relevant basis for a decision than an overall public benchmark alone.
Do not assume the demo’s existence means Falcon-ASR is available as a local installation or hosted API. TII’s introduction says API access and native applications are planned; that does not establish that either is currently available. The official material reviewed also does not establish model-download instructions or licensing terms. For now, the documented route to try the model is the demo linked by TII.
The current published material also does not specify the demo’s privacy or retention behavior. If a recording contains personal, confidential, or otherwise sensitive speech, check the destination’s current terms and your own organization’s rules before uploading it. The fact that TII invites users to try recordings is not a substitute for confirming how submitted audio is handled.

TII reports an average word error rate (WER) of 20.92% and average character error rate (CER) of 8.79% across six Arabic test sets. It also reports a 22.73% WER and 10.19% CER on its internal Emirati evaluation, which TII says used held-out recordings and human-validated transcripts. These are separate evaluation results, not estimates of what a particular user will get. The six-set Arabic result and the internal Emirati result should not be treated as two measurements of the same sample.
WER and CER measure differences between a system transcript and a reference transcript; lower values indicate fewer errors. WER evaluates at the word level, while CER evaluates at the character level. They give complementary views of transcription quality, but neither tells you which particular words were wrong or whether an error changes the meaning. A small error rate can still matter in a legal record, a quotation, a name, or a critical instruction. For consequential use, listen back and correct the transcript instead of treating a benchmark score as a quality guarantee.

A benchmark average can conceal differences between recordings, speakers, dialects, and recording conditions. Your audio may include vocabulary or accents that are not represented in the same way in a test set, or it may have poor signal quality. Conversely, a recording that closely resembles the evaluation material could perform differently from the average in either direction. TII’s numbers describe performance on its stated evaluations; they do not predict the error rate for an untested user recording.
TII also reports a 5.74% mean WER across seven public English test sets. That result is for English and should not be used as an Arabic accuracy estimate. Likewise, do not compare that English figure directly with the Arabic averages as if they were measurements from a shared test. Language and test scope are different.
For Arabic, TII says its evaluation follows the Open Universal Arabic ASR Leaderboard protocol, uses six test sets and pinned manifests, and compares against leaderboard figures checked on 30 September 2026. TII reports Falcon-ASR’s Arabic average WER was 2.25 percentage points below the best published result in the snapshot it checked on that date. This is a dated comparison, not a claim of universal superiority; leaderboard results can change, and comparisons are meaningful only when the test conditions are comparable.
What TII’s benchmark comparisons show
The table reproduces figures reported by TII. The Arabic leaderboard averages and internal Emirati evaluation are different test scopes; do not compare their rows as if they came from one shared test set. These figures are TII-reported, not independent validation. They can help readers understand what TII compared, but they cannot settle which recognizer will work best on a particular organization’s audio.

TII reports WER for the comparison systems in these tables; it does not state their CER figures in the cited comparison. The internal Emirati figures apply to TII’s held-out Emirati recordings and human-validated transcripts, not to the six-set Arabic average. A lower WER in one of these TII-reported evaluations does not establish that a system will perform better on every user’s audio. The result is most useful as one comparison point when the language variety and evaluation conditions are relevant to your intended use.

When comparing Falcon-ASR with another recognizer, look beyond the lowest published number. Check whether the result is WER or CER, what language and dialect were tested, how many sets were included, and whether the recordings resemble yours. Also check whether the comparison is for a demo, downloadable model, or hosted service: availability and workflow are separate practical questions from recognition quality. TII’s comparison tables provide reported WER values, but the material described here does not establish comparable deployment options for each listed system.
Recording conditions and transcript review
TII says Falcon-ASR’s training and evaluation included background noise, overlapping speech, music, room reverberation, telephone effects, and variation in speed and pitch. Those are conditions the model was exposed to, not guarantees that every recording with those conditions will be transcribed accurately. TII also identifies dialect and recording conditions as relevant to Arabic recognition. A model’s exposure to noisy or variable audio should therefore inform what you test, not replace testing.
For a practical review, play the audio alongside the transcript and check the sections where recognition errors matter most: names, dates, figures, technical terms, dialect-specific expressions, and speech from people talking over one another. Listen for omissions as well as substitutions; a transcript may read naturally while leaving out a short phrase or speaker turn. If your task depends on exact wording, correct the transcript rather than treating the generated text as a verified record. If subtitle timing matters, inspect the word timestamps as well as the text.
To evaluate a recurring workflow, sample different speakers and the range of conditions you expect to encounter. Include Emirati Arabic if that is the target, and distinguish it from MSA or another regional variety when judging results. Include phone audio, music, reverberation, overlap, or changes in speaking speed only if those are realistic for your use case. This kind of representative check does not create a formal benchmark, but it helps expose practical failure points that a single clean sample can miss.
For privacy-sensitive recordings, do not upload audio until you have reviewed the demo’s current data-handling terms. TII’s published material reviewed here does not establish how the demo stores or retains submitted audio. If you cannot verify that the demo meets your requirements, do not submit sensitive material. This is especially important if a recording contains conversations or information you are not authorized to upload.

What is not established about installation, API use, and cost
TII’s published introduction points readers to a Hugging Face demo and says API access and native applications are planned. It does not, in the material reviewed, verify that model weights are downloadable, provide local inference instructions, state licensing terms, or confirm a currently available hosted API. As a result, there are no verified installation commands or API calls to give here. Check TII’s current official documentation for those details before building a workflow around local deployment or a service integration.
The material also does not establish a price for using the demo, a paid plan, or an affiliate offer. Do not assume that a planned API or native application has a published price or is available to purchase. The documented entry point is the demo; its current access conditions, if any, should be checked on the live page. No special microphone, recorder, or other physical product is identified as necessary to transcribe an existing audio recording with the demo.
If you need a repeatable production workflow, verify several separate requirements before committing: whether there is a supported inference route for your environment, whether its license permits your intended use, how audio is transmitted and handled, what languages and dialects are supported for your case, and whether timestamps can be obtained in the form your workflow needs. TII’s public description supports discussion of the model, language coverage, timestamps, and demo, but it does not answer those operational questions in detail.
Choosing whether Falcon-ASR fits your use
Falcon-ASR is worth trying when you need an Arabic-focused recognizer, especially for Emirati Arabic, and a demo is sufficient for your initial evaluation. Judge its suitability with representative audio from your actual use case, rather than relying only on an overall benchmark. The key decision is not simply whether a published number looks strong; it is whether the model’s language coverage, transcript quality, timestamp feature, and available access route match the task you have.
Recommended Free Tools
- Match the speech variety: distinguish Emirati Arabic from MSA and other dialects when assessing results; TII highlights Emirati speech but does not publish a guarantee for every regional variety.
- Compare like with like: use WER or CER results from comparable test sets and conditions, not figures from different languages or evaluation scopes.
- Test the recording conditions you have: noise, overlap, telephone effects, reverberation, speed, and pitch variation are all relevant conditions discussed by TII.
- Confirm workflow availability: the documented starting point is the Hugging Face demo. Local use, licensing, API availability, and data handling require current confirmation from TII.
- Decide how much review is acceptable: a transcript intended for informal reference may need a different level of checking from a transcript used as an exact record. TII’s benchmarks do not remove the need for human review where wording matters.
- Review output for consequential use: correct the transcript and verify timestamps when errors could change meaning or timing.
There is no single benchmark threshold in TII’s published description that defines a good fit for every task. A useful decision comes from matching your language variety, recording conditions, accuracy needs, privacy requirements, and access route. If the demo cannot meet a workflow requirement, that is a product-fit issue even if the benchmark figures are relevant to your language.
