To stream clips with different resolutions as one YouTube Live playlist, first normalize every clip to the same output dimensions and frame rate, then feed the normalized sequence through one persistent encoder. Preserve each clip’s aspect ratio by choosing either padding (fit) or cropping (fill); do not stretch the picture unless distortion is intentional. Set the stream encoder for YouTube’s live ingest guidance, test the playlist, and monitor stream health.
Plan one output profile for the whole playlist
A live stream must present a consistent encoded frame size. Pick a fixed canvas and frame rate before preparing the clips; do not let each source file determine the live output dimensions. The right profile depends on the channel’s goal, the encoder and hardware available, network headroom, latency needs, and the source material. YouTube’s published live settings are ingest recommendations, not guarantees of quality for a particular setup.

- Inspect every source: record width, height, frame rate, sample aspect ratio, scan type, pixel format, audio layout, and color metadata. Flag interlaced footage, HDR, and unusual aspect ratios for separate handling.
- Choose the canvas and frame rate: keep both fixed across the playlist, and make sure the machine can encode the chosen output continuously.
- Choose a codec and encoder: YouTube’s live guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS. Check which encoders your installed FFmpeg build actually provides; hardware encoders can impose different constraints from
libx264.
FFmpeg’s installed version and available filters and encoders matter. The filter pattern below illustrates the approach; it is not a tested, universal command for every build or media collection.

Mixed aspect ratios cannot all fill the same canvas without either leaving space, removing part of the image, or changing its geometry. Decide deliberately for the content:

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
- Fit and pad: scale the full picture down to fit inside the canvas, then pad the remaining area. This preserves all source content and geometry but can leave bars.
- Fill and crop: scale until the canvas is covered, then crop excess edges. This fills the screen and preserves geometry, but part of the image is lost.
- Stretch: resize the picture non-proportionally to fill the canvas. This distorts shapes, so use it only when that effect is intentional.
A common fit-and-pad filter pattern is scale=TARGET_W:TARGET_H:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease, followed by padding to TARGET_W:TARGET_H. Replace those labels with actual dimensions and adapt the full filter chain to your files and FFmpeg build. Use even or otherwise encoder-compatible output dimensions where required. FFmpeg documents force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease for proportionally fitting within specified bounds; force_divisible_by can constrain dimensions when aspect-ratio enforcement is used, with a possible slight ratio shift. The reset_sar option resets sample aspect ratio to 1:1 while accounting for display aspect ratio during proportional scaling. See the FFmpeg filters documentation.
Normalize timing, audio, and color
Resolution alone is not enough to make a playlist uniform. Sources with different frame rates, timestamp behavior, scan types, audio layouts, or color characteristics can produce visible or audible discontinuities. Apply a consistent output frame rate and audio format when the sources vary, and verify timestamps and audio continuity at clip transitions rather than assuming that inputs will join cleanly.

YouTube recommends square pixels and Rec. 709 for SDR. That is not a reason to simply relabel HDR or differently encoded material as Rec. 709: HDR and mismatched color metadata require a deliberate conversion workflow. Inspect interlaced sources as well; a shared progressive-output filter chain may need deinterlacing rather than treating the source like ordinary progressive footage.
Choose the concat method that matches the job
FFmpeg distinguishes three concat mechanisms. The concat filter is intended for concatenation with re-encoding, so it is the natural choice when clips need normalization. The concat demuxer is useful when avoiding re-encoding and the input streams meet its compatibility requirements. The concat protocol is a separate mechanism; simply joining files does not by itself create a reliable live-playlist architecture. For an always-advancing live playlist, the operational goal is one stable encoder output while sources change. See the FFmpeg FAQ for the project’s explanation of concat options.

Set YouTube Live ingest settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. It supports frame rates up to 60 fps and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options. For audio, it recommends AAC or MP3; 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. Confirm current requirements on YouTube’s live encoder settings page before production.
For H.264, YouTube’s published recommended live ingest bitrates are:

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, accessed in 2026, not measurements of an individual stream. The same guidance gives separate rates for other resolutions and codecs. Choose the rate for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than borrowing a video-upload recommendation. Leave network headroom and test at the planned bitrate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBuild and validate the playlist
- Inventory the media. Record each file’s video, audio, timing, scan, and color properties. Identify files that need special treatment before applying a shared normalization approach.
- Set the profile. Fix the canvas, frame rate, codec, audio format, and fit-or-fill policy for all clips. Confirm that dimensions are acceptable to the chosen encoder.
- Normalize the sequence. Use an appropriate re-encoding workflow—typically the concat filter when the clips need scaling or other per-clip changes. Apply consistent timing and audio handling, and convert color deliberately where required.
- Encode one continuous output. Configure the persistent stream encoder for the selected YouTube ingest profile, including CBR and the keyframe interval.
- Test representative material. Run a playlist that includes the most challenging differences in aspect ratio, motion, audio, and color. Check transitions, stream stability, audio continuity, and the actual ingest health before relying on it for an event.
- Monitor during the live run. Watch stream health and network delivery. If the stream is unstable, investigate available network headroom, encoder capacity, and the chosen bitrate before changing the output profile.
Troubleshoot common problems
- Clips appear stretched: the scaling policy is changing width and height independently. Use proportional scaling and choose padding or cropping instead.
- Bars appear on some clips: this is expected with fit-and-pad when source and canvas aspect ratios differ. Use fill-and-crop only if losing the outer image is acceptable.
- Edges disappear: the fill-and-crop policy is removing content to cover the canvas. Switch to fit-and-pad if preserving every edge matters more than filling the frame.
- The playlist fails at a transition: check whether the concat method matches the inputs. The demuxer requires compatible input streams; when sources need normalization and re-encoding, use an appropriate filter-based workflow.
- Motion or audio breaks between clips: inspect differing frame rates, timestamps, and audio layouts. Normalize where needed and test transitions in a representative sequence.
- Output dimensions are rejected or encoding fails: verify the target dimensions against encoder constraints and the installed FFmpeg build. Hardware and software encoders may differ.
- Colors look wrong: inspect source color metadata and whether material is HDR or SDR. YouTube recommends Rec. 709 for SDR; do not treat metadata relabeling as a substitute for HDR conversion.
- Stream health is poor despite matching settings: test network delivery with headroom at the intended bitrate and confirm that the machine sustains the chosen encode. YouTube recommends testing representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health.
