Start by identifying whether OBS is struggling to encode or render the scene—or whether the stream is dropping frames because of the network. Then run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, lower output resolution or frame rate only as needed, and simplify the rain scene. Change one setting at a time and compare results during the same stream workload; there is no universal CPU target or guaranteed reduction for every setup.
First, identify what is actually failing
CPU use in OBS depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A computer that meets OBS’s system requirements is not guaranteed to handle every streaming workload successfully. OBS also uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes, so a rendering bottleneck can look like a general performance problem even when the concern is described as high CPU.

Before changing settings, open OBS’s Statistics window during the stream and check its logs if interruptions occur. Distinguish rendering or encoding problems from network dropped frames. OBS says an increasing “Dropped frames” count with a yellow or red connection indicator points to an unstable connection to the streaming service or a connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate; OBS drops frames to avoid viewer buffering. That is not fixed simply by reducing CPU use. See the OBS dropped frames guidance.
A rain loop may involve fewer changing elements than a game scene, but playback, filters, browser overlays, scaling, recording, or multiple outputs can still add work. The actual load depends on your setup; no particular rain file or PC has a guaranteed result.

Reduce OBS load in a controlled order
1. Establish a baseline
- Start the rain stream using the scene, output settings, and other tasks you normally keep active.
- In OBS, open View > Stats and note whether the symptoms point to rendering, encoding, or network dropped frames. Check the OBS log when you need more detail.
- Record the current output resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene sources. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which change affected the result.
2. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard
Use Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard and apply its recommended settings as a starting point. OBS says the wizard can get most basic settings right and recommends it for settings suited to the computer and configuration. Its recommendation is not proof that a 24/7 stream will run without interruption, so assess the actual stream afterward. Official guidance: OBS streaming quick start guide.
3. Lower output demand only as far as necessary
In Settings > Video, test a lower output resolution or frame rate if rendering or encoding is the issue. Fewer frames can reduce rendering and encoding work; OBS specifically suggests trying 30 FPS if 60 FPS is not working. Keep the lowest settings that still meet the visual goal for the ambience stream.

Do not start by changing the base canvas unless resources are severely constrained. OBS notes that changing it means repositioning sources. For relevant guidance, see OBS general performance and encoding issues.
4. Make the rain scene lean
- Remove sources the live scene does not use. OBS notes that sources can consume resources even when they are not visible.
- Use media assets sized appropriately for the output. If you are streaming below 4K, an oversized 4K visual may be unnecessary.
- Reduce or remove filters that are not essential to the look or sound.
- Reduce the number and size of browser sources. For static branding, an image source may suit the design without an animated browser overlay.
- Keep only the rain media and audio, essential branding, and overlays the stream needs.
5. Check competing GPU load
If OBS indicates a GPU rendering or overload problem, check other programs using the GPU. On Windows, OBS says running OBS as administrator can help in many GPU-overload cases. This is GPU-specific troubleshooting, not a general CPU fix; use it when the symptoms point to that bottleneck.

6. Consider an encoder already available on your system
Check the encoder choices OBS offers on your machine and whether the observed issue is encoding capacity. OBS suggests trying an available hardware encoder for recordings, but that does not mean every continuous stream needs a graphics-card purchase or that an encoder change will resolve a rendering, network, or scene-complexity problem. If considering a graphics card with a hardware video encoder, first verify compatibility with your installed OBS and drivers, and compare the workload and output quality at your chosen bitrate. OBS’s general requirements are described at OBS system requirements; they do not establish model-specific performance rankings.
7. Retest the same workload
After each adjustment, run the same scene and output settings long enough to observe the normal workload, then compare OBS Statistics and logs with the baseline. There is no published CPU-reduction percentage or guaranteed uptime duration for rain ambience streams. If the problem remains, return to the diagnosis: rendering, encoding, and network drops need different fixes.
