Build a reliable before-and-after comparison
- Choose representative pages. Include the homepage or a key landing page, a typical post, an archive or listing, and any important form or shop page. Add pages that use custom blocks, menus, widgets, or other theme-dependent components. There is no universal required number of URLs; choose enough to cover the templates and user journeys that matter on your site.
- Save a known-good baseline before updating. Capture each chosen URL and retain the images with a date, theme version, and brief note about the site state. Keep the original images rather than overwriting them when later approving a change.
- Keep capture conditions consistent. Use the same URL, viewport width and height, browser/rendering environment, login state, and page state for both captures. Check desktop and mobile on pages where responsive behavior matters.
- Prepare a safe update environment. When possible, update a staging or development copy first, especially if a layout issue could affect purchases, forms, or other important tasks. Arrange a backup or rollback route before changing the live site.
- Update and recapture. Update the theme on the chosen environment, then capture the exact same URLs and viewports using the same settings.
- Compare and review. Inspect screenshots side by side, with an overlay or slider, or as a generated difference image. For every flagged area, decide whether it is an intended design change or a regression, and check key user journeys before accepting the new baseline.
- Keep the audit trail. Retain the previous baseline and record the update date, theme version, reviewed differences, and whether the new images were approved. This makes later diagnosis easier.
WordPress recommends keeping themes and plugins updated and advises regular backups and a rollback option. It also lets administrators manage theme auto-updates on a per-theme basis. See WordPress’s auto-update documentation. A screenshot diff and a backup serve different purposes: one helps spot visible changes; the other provides a recovery route.
Choose a comparison method that fits your workflow

Manual screenshots
For a handful of pages, ordinary screenshots can be enough. Name and organize captures by URL or template, viewport, and theme version so that each before image can be matched to its after image. Manual review is flexible, but it depends on someone remembering to repeat the same captures and inspect them after each update.
WordPress plugin: VRTs

The listing says the site generally needs to be publicly accessible to its external screenshot service; password protection or a firewall can prevent it from working. If the site is private, check access requirements before building your process around the service.
Playwright visual comparisons
For a developer-owned test suite, Playwright’s visual comparison documentation covers screenshot assertions with toHaveScreenshot(). Playwright recommends committing the reference snapshot directory so proposed changes can be reviewed. When a UI change is intentional, review the new screenshots and update the approved references rather than accepting a baseline change blindly.

Reduce noisy differences without hiding real regressions
A visual diff reports that pixels changed; it cannot decide whether the change is harmful. Ads, rotating content, animations, carousels, lazy-loaded images, cookie banners, and other dynamic elements can produce differences even when the theme is behaving correctly.
- Keep page state and capture timing consistent. Where your tool supports it, wait for the relevant content to load before capturing.
- Exclude or stabilize dynamic regions only when those regions are not what you need to test. Hiding too much can conceal a genuine problem.
- Review alert thresholds and element exclusions rather than treating every alert as a defect. VRTs describes both configurable exclusions and alert thresholds in its plugin listing.
- For automated tests, keep browser conditions and reference images stable, then inspect proposed baseline changes. A new baseline should represent an intentional, reviewed result.
Decide whether a change is intentional or a regression
Inspect the changed area in context. Ask whether it alters information hierarchy, readability, responsive layout, imagery, navigation, or the ability to complete an important action. A spacing or color change may be intentional; a mobile menu that no longer opens or a form pushed off-screen is not something to accept merely because the screenshot changed.
Compare the updated result with the theme’s intended design where that is known, and exercise important journeys such as navigation, search, submission, or checkout as relevant to the site. Only after review should you approve the new reference images. Update safely and retain a recovery path
WordPress administrators can enable or disable theme auto-updates individually. Before relying on automatic updates, decide how visual checks will fit into the process and ensure you can recover if the update causes a problem. WordPress’s auto-update guidance recommends regular backups and a rollback option.
WP STAGING’s plugin listing describes staging, backup, restore, and cloning workflows for testing updates on a working copy. Staging and backup tools support safer updates, but they are not visual-diff systems by themselves.

Update from the WordPress dashboard
Use the theme update controls in your WordPress administration area, and verify which theme is being changed before proceeding. Theme auto-updates are managed per theme; the exact dashboard presentation may vary by WordPress version and site configuration.

The official WP-CLI wp theme update command can target one or more themes, update all themes with available updates, exclude named themes, or select a version or release scope. This controls the update operation only; screenshot comparison remains a separate step or tool. Run it against the intended environment and theme, then capture the same page set used for the baseline.

Troubleshooting visual comparisons
- Every comparison looks different: Check that URL, viewport, browser/rendering environment, login state, and page state match. Look for rotating or animated content and inconsistent loading time.
- Cookie or chat overlays obscure the page: Stabilize or exclude those elements when the comparison tool allows it, but retain them if testing their appearance is part of the goal.
- A plugin cannot reach the site: Check whether the site is publicly accessible to the external capture service. Password protection or a firewall can block a service such as the one described in the VRTs listing.
- A test flags a harmless change: Inspect the changed region and adjust exclusions or thresholds carefully. Do not simply raise a threshold or approve a new baseline without reviewing whether important content or behavior changed.
- The live site breaks after an update: Use the backup or rollback route prepared before the update. A screenshot comparison helps identify visible differences, but does not itself undo a theme update.
