How to Track Views and Engagement Across DEV.to Posts

Find a DEV.to post’s Stats page for engagement over time and referrers, or use the authenticated API and dated snapshots to compare your own articles.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For one DEV.to article, open its Stats page from your dashboard or add /stats to the article URL. To compare several of your posts or keep your own history, use DEV’s authenticated API to collect each article’s view, reaction, and comment totals, then save dated snapshots.

Choose the right way to track DEV.to post performance

Route Best for What it provides Setup
Post Stats page Inspecting one article Engagement over time and external sites referring readers, according to DEV’s December 8, 2023 changelog (DEV Team changelog). Open the post’s Stats link from your dashboard, or append /stats to its URL.
Authenticated API and saved snapshots Aggregating your articles, sorting totals, or preserving a series you control Article totals including views, reactions, and comments; your saved snapshots provide a history for comparison (Forem API documentation). Requires an API key and API tooling such as a script or other client.

Use the Stats page when you need to investigate a single post without building a report. Use the API when you need a cross-post view or a dated record you can retain and analyze yourself.

Open an individual post’s Stats page

  1. Sign in to DEV.to and open your dashboard.
  2. Find the article and select its Stats link. Alternatively, open the article URL and add /stats to the end. For example, if the post URL is https://dev.to/author/example-post, open https://dev.to/author/example-post/stats.
  3. Review the post’s performance information, including engagement over time and external sites referring readers, as described in DEV’s December 8, 2023 changelog. The page also includes a list of users who reacted to the author’s content (DEV Team changelog).

DEV’s changelog establishes these Stats page features, but the sources available here do not establish a fixed refresh interval or a guaranteed period of historical retention. Avoid assuming that figures update in real time or that the page retains a particular lookback window.

Track several of your posts with the authenticated API

Forem’s official API documentation describes authenticated endpoints for your articles, including /api/articles/me and /api/articles/me/published. The article response schema includes page_views_count, positive_reactions_count, and comments_count (Forem API documentation).

Philips 24 Inch Computer Monitor FHD 100Hz VA VESA Flicker-Free, 241V8LB
  • CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
  1. Create or retrieve an API key through DEV’s account settings, following DEV’s current account interface and API guidance.
  2. Request one of the documented personal article endpoints, such as /api/articles/me/published, using your API key in the documented api-key request header (Forem API documentation).
  3. For each article, retain its ID and title together with the values of page_views_count, positive_reactions_count, and comments_count.
  4. Repeat the request on a schedule appropriate to your reporting needs and save each result with the date and time collected. Compare snapshots to see how totals changed in your own record.

Keep the API key private; do not publish it in a public repository, client-side code, or a shared document. The API documentation establishes endpoint authentication and field names, but the sources reviewed do not establish a guaranteed update cadence or a long-term historical time series supplied by DEV. Saving snapshots is a way to create your own history, not a claim that the API itself guarantees one.

Understand what each metric says

  • Views: The API reports traffic volume as page_views_count. A recent DEV author tutorial notes that useful private view totals require an API key; a public article request may not expose them (DEV author tutorial).
  • Reactions: Reader feedback appears as positive_reactions_count in the API response. DEV’s reaction options include ❤️ Love it, 🦄 Exceptional, 🤯 Wow!, 🙌 Well Done, and 🔥 Hot Take (DEV membership page).
  • Comments: comments_count records discussion activity. DEV Help also describes subscribing to comments to follow activity on a post (DEV Help).
  • Referrers and engagement over time: These belong to the individual post Stats page, as described in DEV’s changelog (DEV Team changelog).

Compare posts without mistaking reach for engagement

Views measure reach; reactions and comments indicate reader interaction. If you calculate reactions per view, name the numerator and denominator and specify the dates or time window covered. It is your own comparison measure, not an official DEV benchmark or universal measure of article quality.

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • Compare posts of similar age when possible, since an older article has had more time to accumulate views and interactions.
  • Compare posts with similar purposes, such as tutorials with tutorials, rather than treating every topic and format as directly equivalent.
  • Use view totals to assess reach and reactions or comments to examine interaction; neither alone explains why one post performed differently.

What organization analytics add

DEV’s organization help page lists CTA click tracking alongside views and reactions as an enhanced analytics feature for organizations (DEV organization analytics help). This is an organization feature, not a capability established for every individual account. Organization administrators can consult that guidance to determine whether it fits their reporting needs.
