Choose an AI coding assistant by measuring what your work actually costs—not by comparing subscription prices alone. Check whether usage is included or metered, which token categories count, what limits apply, and how much review or correction the tool requires. A short, repeatable trial on your own codebase is the most useful way to compare services.
Start with the way each tool bills
“Token cost” can mean a metered charge for tokens, consumption from a monthly or shared allowance, or usage credits that apply after included access runs out. These models are not directly comparable without checking what the allowance covers and what happens when it is exhausted.

| Tool | Billing structure described by the vendor | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot | GitHub announced that premium request units would be replaced by GitHub AI Credits beginning June 1, 2026. Credits are based on input, output, and cached-token consumption. The announcement also listed base plan prices, but those were amounts stated on April 27, 2026, not guaranteed current checkout prices. | Current plan terms, model rates, included credits, and which features consume credits. GitHub said code completions and Next Edit suggestions would remain outside AI Credit consumption. |
| Claude Code | Claude Code shares usage limits with the signed-in Claude plan. Paid users may enable usage credits for continued use at standard API rates. | Current plan limits, rolling reset windows, any weekly limits, and whether usage credits are enabled. |
| OpenAI Codex | Codex may draw on a shared allowance or credit pool with other plan features. Token-based Enterprise agreements are billed in USD. | Current plan allowance, which features share it, and workspace budgets or user caps. Exact individual plan limits and rates should be checked on current pricing pages. |
| Cursor | The available documentation landing page identifies Cursor as a coding agent and links to a Models & Pricing page; it did not provide comparable current plan-price details. | Follow Cursor’s current Models & Pricing link and confirm its current plan, included usage, and overage rules before comparing. |

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompare token categories, not just a blended rate
When a vendor publishes token rates, check input, cached input, cache writes where applicable, and output separately. A workload that repeatedly supplies the same repository context may have a different cost profile from a small prompt with little context. Output-heavy tasks can also differ from tasks that mostly send context to the model.

GitHub’s Copilot table reports US-dollar rates per million tokens and separates input, cached input, and output; some model entries also have long-context tiers. For example, the retrieved table lists Claude Sonnet 5.5 at $2.00 per million input tokens, $0.20 per million cached input tokens, $2.50 per million cache-write tokens, and $10.00 per million output tokens. It lists GPT-6 Luna default at $0.10 per million input tokens, $0.01 per million cached input tokens, and $0.125 per million output tokens. These are rates shown for billing through GitHub Copilot, not direct API prices from Anthropic or OpenAI. Rates can change, so check the live table before making a decision.

Account for context, task size, and agent behavior
A quick inline suggestion is not equivalent to a multi-step task that reads files, plans changes, edits code, and runs tools. Larger repositories, longer instructions, reasoning choices, runtime, and tool use can all affect consumption. OpenAI describes Codex usage as depending on “the model, where the task runs, task complexity, context, reasoning, speed, and tools.” GitHub likewise notes that multi-step agent work can be more demanding than a quick chat.

Its guidance suggests pointing Claude Code to file paths instead of pasting whole files when full contents are unnecessary; using @ can inject the full file and its CLAUDE.md tree. That advice can help avoid unnecessary context, but it is a vendor recommendation, not proof that Claude Code is cheaper or better than another assistant.

Check caps and overages before relying on a subscription
An included plan allowance does not necessarily mean unlimited use. Anthropic says Claude plans have rolling five-hour limits and that paid plans add weekly limits. It does not promise a fixed number of messages: “How much you can do depends on the length and complexity of your conversations, the model you choose, and the features you use, so there’s no fixed message count.” Paid users can enable usage credits for continued use at standard API rates.

For Codex, OpenAI directs Enterprise users to check with workspace administrators for budgets and per-user limits. For Copilot, confirm the current treatment of metered features, credits, and any transitional plan terms rather than assuming the announcement’s original arrangements are still in effect.

Run a same-task trial on your own codebase
No universal cost-per-accepted-code-change ranking is established by the available vendor information. Use a controlled personal workload test instead. This is a comparison method, not a published cross-vendor benchmark.
- Pick two or three tools you can actually use. Include the same type of editor, CLI, or repository workflow you expect to use day to day.
- Choose one representative repository and task. Give each tool the same instructions and acceptance criteria. Include a small task and, if agent work matters to you, a larger repository-level task.
- Record usage and work performed. Note the tool and model, visible token or credit change, elapsed time if relevant, and the human effort spent reviewing, correcting, and testing the result.
- Judge accepted outcomes, not generated volume. A low usage figure is not a win if the result needs extensive repair. Compare the cost and time required to reach code you would actually accept.
- Repeat before scaling up. One run can be unusually easy or difficult; repeat tasks that represent your normal workload before choosing a team-wide default.
Verify these details before subscribing or rolling out to a team
- Current plan price, billing geography, and currency.
- Included usage and its reset period; whether limits are rolling, weekly, or otherwise defined.
- Which products and features share the same allowance or credit pool.
- Model-specific input, cached-input, cache-write, and output rates, including long-context pricing where applicable.
- Whether usage credits or overages are enabled, and what charges follow when included use runs out.
- Workspace spending budgets and per-user limits.
- For Enterprise offers, whether a per-seat fee is separate from usage billed at token or API rates.
- Workflow fit: editor or CLI support, repository hosting, organization controls, and integrations your team needs.
GitHub describes Copilot offerings that include inline suggestions and chat, alongside organization controls and GitHub.com integration. Those workflow differences matter, but they do not replace a cost test on your own tasks.
