GitHub Issues and Projects help you organize work, but the GitHub documentation reviewed for this guide describes planning and progress tracking—not a built-in elapsed-time timer or hours ledger. To record hours against issues or pull requests, use a third-party tracker with a documented GitHub integration, then review the entries and reports in that service.
What GitHub can and cannot track natively
GitHub Projects organizes issues, pull requests, and ideas in table, board, or roadmap views, with custom fields, filters, grouping, and charts. GitHub describes a project as “an adaptable collection of items that you can view as a table, a kanban board, or a roadmap and that stays up-to-date with GitHub data.” Those features help teams plan and monitor work; the reviewed documentation does not describe them as an elapsed-time timer. Issues provide a structured place to track bugs, tasks, ideas, and other work, and their metadata can be used in Projects. They are not, by themselves, an automatic hours log. GitHub Docs: About issues

The following are vendor-documented capabilities, not independent installation or accuracy tests. In these workflows, a browser extension places time-entry controls in GitHub; the tracker’s own service is where users handle time records and reporting. Exact coverage and setup differ.

Choose based on your work and reporting needs
- Check work-item coverage. Confirm whether the timer appears on the items you use—issues, pull requests, or merge requests. Vendor descriptions do not all name the same item types.
- Choose an entry style. Decide whether a start-and-stop timer is enough or whether you also need manual entries, estimates, or corrections to past entries.
- Match reporting to the purpose. Check whether the service provides the personal totals, team timesheets, billing records, approvals, or budget reporting you need. Reporting is handled in the time-tracking service, not in GitHub Projects.
- Understand project mapping. Check whether repositories and work items sync automatically or whether you must create projects and tasks separately. Harvest, for example, says its projects are configured independently.
- Review authorization and extension requirements. Find out which browser extension and GitHub permissions are required, and make sure each person who needs to track time can install the extension and connect an account. Everhour documents a
repo-scope request for issue access. - Check your GitHub environment. If you use a self-hosted instance, confirm that the integration supports its domain and follow any vendor-specific configuration. Clockify documents custom-domain setup; Everhour’s instructions discuss repository selection and member access.
A practical setup sequence
- List the work items to track. Decide whether your team needs time against issues, pull requests, merge requests, or a combination.
- Select a service by its documented coverage. Compare entry methods, reporting, project mapping, browser support, and the GitHub environment you use.
- Review access before authorizing. Ask an administrator to check the app’s requested GitHub permissions and which repositories or organizations it can access.
- Connect the accounts and install the extension. Follow the vendor’s current setup instructions; self-hosted GitHub may require domain configuration.
- Configure projects and tasks where needed. Do not assume a GitHub repository automatically creates a matching reporting project in the tracker.
- Record a sample entry and inspect it in the tracker. Verify that it is attached to the intended work item and appears in the report or timesheet you plan to use.
Keep the limits of the integration in view
These integrations add a time-recording workflow around GitHub work; they do not turn the reviewed native Issues or Projects features into an hours ledger. Product behavior, supported browsers, permissions, and setup requirements can change, so confirm current vendor documentation before connecting an account.
