Northwestern University’s 2025 reporting describes a dissolvable temporary pacemaker designed for children recovering from heart surgery, and the peer-reviewed work behind it has so far been tested in animals and in human heart tissue, not in routine clinical care. The sources reviewed for this article do not establish regulatory approval, a clinical trial schedule, or a date when the device could reach patients.
Two generations of the same idea, not one device
Two separate studies from the same Northwestern group are often reported together, and they describe different hardware. The 2021 work introduced a wireless, battery-free pacemaker that dissolves in the body. The 2025 work describes a smaller, millimetre-scale bioresorbable system that is controlled optically. Treating them as a single product leads to wrong assumptions about how the device is powered, how it is controlled, and how far along it is.

Why children after heart surgery are the target
Some infants and children need temporary pacing after an operation, when the heart’s own rhythm is disrupted and the body needs a steady electrical signal while it recovers. Northwestern Medicine’s 2025 article, citing co-leader Igor Efimov, notes that about 1% of children are born with congenital heart defects and that some of them may need pacing for about seven days after surgery. That seven-day figure is an approximate description of the clinical need in that report, not a rule that every child needs pacing for that length of time.

Efimov framed the size problem directly in the 2025 reporting: “There’s a crucial need for temporary pacemakers in the context of pediatric heart surgeries, and that’s a use case where size miniaturization is incredibly important.”

How the 2021 device worked
The 2021 pacemaker was built to disappear after its job was done. Its components are reported to absorb over five to seven weeks, which describes how long the material lasts in the body. It does not describe how long a child would need pacing. Those are two different timeframes, and the first should not be read as the second.
Because the device has no battery and no external wires, the proposed advantage is avoiding the externalized leads used in many temporary systems and the later procedure to remove them. Conventional temporary pacing can leave wires exiting the chest; the study’s authors propose that a dissolvable device could avoid that step. The reviewed sources do not establish whether this lowers complications or improves outcomes in children, so the benefit remains a design goal rather than a demonstrated result.

What the 2025 version changes
The 2025 work targets size. Northwestern describes a pacemaker smaller than a grain of rice, paired with a soft wireless component worn on the chest. The published description is of a millimetre-scale, bioresorbable optoelectronic system with optical control. Miniaturization matters most in small patients, where the available space around the heart is limited, but the sources do not quantify how device size translates into outcomes for children of different ages or body sizes.
What the evidence does and does not show
- Shown: the 2021 device paced hearts in several animal models and in human cardiac tissue, as reported in the peer-reviewed Nature Biotechnology paper and summarized by the National Institutes of Health (2021).
- Shown: the 2025 work describes a smaller, optically controlled bioresorbable design in a peer-reviewed paper.
- Not shown: a human clinical trial. Human results in the 2021 work came from heart-tissue samples, not from patients.
- Not shown: comparative outcomes in children against current temporary pacing.
- Not shown: regulatory approval, a trial schedule, manufacturing, pricing, or a date for availability.
How it compares with current temporary pacing
The sources do not include a clinical head-to-head comparison, so the table below sets out the axes that matter to clinicians and families rather than settled results.

Steps before any family could use it
For this device to reach a child, several stages would need to be completed, and none is documented in the reviewed sources:
- Human safety and performance testing in patients, beyond the tissue-sample work described so far.
- Regulatory review and a decision by the relevant authority.
- Manufacturing that can be produced consistently and at scale.
- Clinical protocols for implantation, monitoring, and the wearable companion component.
- Evidence that the device performs at least as well as current temporary pacing in children.
Until those steps are reported, a child’s pacing decision rests on the established methods that cardiac surgery teams already use. Families with questions about a specific case should ask the treating cardiologist or surgeon about the options available at their hospital.

Reading the headline carefully
“Could save children’s lives” describes the purpose the researchers are aiming at, not a demonstrated effect. The accurate version is narrower: a small, dissolvable temporary pacemaker has been shown to pace hearts in animal models and in human heart tissue, and its designers intend it for children after surgery. Whether it will change survival or recovery for children remains untested.
