UTMs identify the campaign or referral associated with incoming traffic; they do not, by themselves, prove that customer support caused a later purchase or other conversion.
What UTMs can—and cannot—tell you
UTM parameters are campaign labels added to a destination URL. Google Analytics uses them to identify the campaigns that refer traffic, and recommends using utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign. Optional parameters can add a campaign ID, distinguish links or creative variants, or record paid search terms. Google’s URL-builder documentation describes the parameters and how campaign information appears in Analytics.

For a support team, the label can help answer questions such as “How many visits arrived through this help-center link?” or “How many recorded key events occurred in sessions associated with this support campaign?” The separate conversion event supplies the outcome; the UTM label supplies campaign context. A tagged session is evidence of a tagged referral, not proof that a support conversation caused a purchase, renewal, or resolved issue.

| Measurement layer | What it answers | What it does not establish on its own |
|---|---|---|
| UTM campaign parameters | Which tagged source, medium, or campaign was associated with incoming traffic. | Whether a support interaction occurred or caused an outcome. |
| Analytics event or key event | Whether the separately configured action—such as a purchase or form submission—was recorded. | Whether support caused that action. |
| Attribution model | How the analytics property assigns credit for key events among recorded touchpoints. | Causation, or a complete record of every customer interaction. |
Google describes attribution as allocating credit for key events among touchpoints; its documentation describes data-driven attribution as the default and covers path and model comparisons. Available settings and reports can depend on the Analytics property. Google’s attribution guide explains the distinction between attribution approaches and key-event paths.

Define the support conversion before tagging links
First decide what “support conversion” means for your team. Google does not prescribe a universal support-conversion metric. Choose an outcome that your analytics, help desk, CRM, or other system can actually record, then document the event name and the rule for counting it.
- Support-link visit: a visitor arrives at a destination from a tagged link in a help center or support message. This measures traffic, not a business outcome.
- Self-service outcome: a separately recorded action after visiting a support resource, such as submitting a particular form or completing a purchase. The event definition and its relationship to support are implementation choices.
- Assisted outcome: a business event associated with a support interaction recorded elsewhere, such as in a help desk or CRM. This requires a reliable way to connect the interaction and outcome; UTMs alone do not create that connection.
Write down the event trigger, the system that records it, and whether it is treated as a key event in Analytics. Avoid counting a page view as a resolved case or successful support outcome unless that is genuinely what the page view represents.
Choose a consistent UTM naming convention
Agree on stable values before distributing links. Parameter values are case-sensitive: for example, Support_Portal and support_portal can appear as different values in reporting. Inconsistent spellings or capitalization fragment results, while absent parameter values may appear as “(not set).” Use a shared naming guide or link-building sheet so agents and teams do not invent variations. Google documents these campaign-tagging conventions and reporting behavior.

utm_source |
Names the referring source. | help_center |
utm_medium |
Identifies the medium or channel. | support_link |
utm_campaign |
Names the campaign or initiative. | account_setup_guide |
utm_id |
Provides a campaign identifier, useful when joining imported campaign data. | HC-2026-04 |
utm_content |
Distinguishes links or creative variants within a campaign. | contact_support_cta |
utm_term |
Records a paid keyword; it is usually not central to support-link tracking unless keyword-level tracking is genuinely needed. | Use only when relevant |
These values are examples, not prescribed universal names. Pick a convention that describes your actual support channels and use it consistently. Include utm_id if your organization needs a stable identifier to join campaign records; do not add fields merely because they exist.
Add parameters to the destination link
- Identify the final destination. Use the URL of the page the support link should open. Confirm that the destination is the one whose visit your analytics setup can record.
- Append the campaign parameters. If the destination URL has no query string, start parameters with
?. Separate each additional key-value pair with&. If the URL already has a query string, append the new parameters with&rather than starting a second question mark. - Use the same spellings and capitalization from your naming guide. An illustrative query string is
&utm_medium=support_link&utm_campaign=account_setup_guide&utm_content=contact_support_cta. Attach it to the destination URL; the values shown are examples. - Publish the tagged URL where the referral occurs. Use it in the relevant support page or outbound support message, and keep a record of which link uses which values. Google’s guidance concerns campaign or referral links to a destination; do not indiscriminately tag internal navigation links. Internal tagging can affect attribution behavior and needs implementation-specific review.
- Test the published link. Open it and check that it reaches the intended page with the campaign parameters intact. Confirm in your analytics setup that the visit is being collected before relying on the report.
Make sure the outcome is recorded separately
Campaign tagging is only one half of the measurement. Configure the system that observes the intended outcome to emit or import a corresponding event. In Google Analytics, the outcome may be reported as a key event if the property and implementation support that setup. A support event may instead originate in a help desk, CRM, or another system; the Google campaign-tagging guidance does not define a universal integration for those products.
Be explicit about the connection between the systems. If the purchase is recorded in Analytics but the support interaction exists only in a help desk, a UTM does not automatically join those records. The team needs an implemented, privacy-appropriate way to associate them, or should limit its claim to campaign-associated traffic and events. Do not report an “assisted conversion” unless the data and matching rule support that description.

Read the campaign and event reports carefully
In Google Analytics, review Traffic acquisition and use session campaign dimensions such as Session source, Session medium, and Session campaign to inspect traffic associated with your tags. Review the relevant event or key-event reporting separately to see whether the chosen outcome was recorded. The report answers depend on your property configuration and data collection.
Do not look for UTM values in the Landing page + query string or Page path + query string dimensions: Google says those dimensions omit UTM information. Its documentation points to Page location for the full URL information. See Google’s explanation of campaign reports and URL dimensions.
Keep the interpretation precise. A session campaign value can identify a tagged campaign associated with a session; it does not establish that the same person had a support interaction, nor does it independently connect a later event across sessions or systems. For credit across touchpoints, inspect the attribution model and path or model comparison available in your property. Attribution redistributes credit according to a model; it is not a causal test.
Importing campaign data
If you import external campaign data, align it with the identifiers and values used by the tagged URLs and collected sessions. Google’s import guidance calls for campaign data to match the campaign identifier and source, medium, campaign, and date values associated with the collected sessions. A mismatch can prevent the imported details from joining as intended. Read Google’s campaign-data import requirements before relying on an import.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common implementation problems
- Different capitalization or spellings: standardize values and update future links; historical variants may remain separate in reporting.
- Missing campaign values: audit the destination link for omitted parameters and review reports for “(not set).”
- UTMs absent from a page-path report: use the campaign dimensions in Traffic acquisition or Page location for URL-level inspection, rather than expecting UTM fields in Landing page + query string or Page path + query string.
- Visits appear but no conversion does: check whether the outcome event is emitted or imported, whether its trigger is working, and whether the report is using the correct event or key-event definition.
- A campaign gets credit, but the team wants proof support caused the outcome: campaign attribution does not establish causation. Report the observed association accurately or use a separately designed causal measurement method.
- Imported campaign data does not line up: compare identifiers, source, medium, campaign, and dates with the values for the collected sessions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do UTM parameters identify the support agent who sent a link?
Not by themselves. UTMs label campaign and referral details. They identify an agent only if an organization deliberately encodes an agent identifier, which raises separate privacy, governance, and reporting considerations not addressed by campaign tagging alone.
Can a UTM show whether a support issue was resolved?
No. It can label traffic from a support link. Resolution must be recorded as an outcome by a system that actually observes the support status, such as the relevant support platform, and connected to analytics only through an implemented data flow.
Should every link in a help center have UTM parameters?
No. Use campaign parameters for referral or campaign links where campaign identification is intended. Tagging ordinary internal navigation can change attribution behavior, so internal links need a deliberate implementation decision rather than blanket tagging.
Why might a UTM value be “(not set)”?
Google says missing campaign values can appear as “(not set).” Check that the link contains the intended parameters and that their values use the agreed spelling and capitalization.
