For personal tracking, use the purchase-history page and compare its transactions with your payment statement. For a child’s account, Steam Families lets an adult approve or decline requests to pay for a shopping cart.
How to view your Steam purchase history
- Sign in to the Steam Client or Steam Help Site.
- Select your account name in the upper-right corner.
- Open Account Details.
- Select View purchase history.
- Open a transaction to review it or, if needed, begin a support or refund request.
For an unfamiliar charge, Steam recommends comparing the purchase-history total with your bank statement or invoice. The amounts may differ because payment providers in some countries add processing fees, taxes or currency-conversion charges; Steam says it does not control those fees. See Steam Support’s guidance on unrecognized charges.

Can you set a spending limit on your own Steam account?
The official Steam account controls documented here do not establish a general self-service purchase cap for an adult’s own account. Steam’s page called “limited user spend” is not a personal budget setting: it tracks qualifying spending toward access to certain community and social features.

Steam requires at least $5 USD of qualifying Steam Store spending for those features. Examples include adding at least that amount to the Steam Wallet or buying Store games of equivalent value. Retail activation keys, free demos, promotional trials and funds from items sold on the Community Market do not count. Pending or processing purchases count only after they are successfully processed. If your Store currency is not USD, Steam converts spending at the daily exchange rate in effect when each purchase is made. A bank refund or dispute can lower the qualifying total; a refund to the Steam Wallet does not change access to those community features. Details are on Steam Support’s Limited User Accounts page.

Use Steam Wallet funds as a budgeting aid
Your current Steam Wallet balance appears beside your profile name. To add funds, open Account Details and select +Add funds to your Steam Wallet. A fixed Wallet balance can help you keep to a personal budget, but it is a balance and payment source—not a documented account-wide purchase cap. Steam says Wallet funds cannot be transferred or gifted to another Steam account.
Steam continues to offer digital gift cards. Its Wallet help page says physical retail Steam Gift Cards are being phased out, with retailers expected to run out of stock by the end of 2026. Because availability can change, check the Steam Wallet help page for current details.

Set up purchase approval for a child with Steam Families
Steam Families includes a purchase-request workflow: a child can ask an adult family member to pay for the child’s shopping cart, and the adult can approve and pay through a mobile device or email. Approved games are added to the child’s account. This gives the adult a chance to decide whether to pay, but Steam’s documentation does not describe it as a configurable maximum-dollar budget.
- Open Account Details > Family Management.
- Create or manage a Steam Family and assign the child account the child role.
- Configure the available parental controls for that account.
- When the child requests payment for a cart, review the request and approve or decline it.
Steam Families also offers store restrictions, game-access permissions, playtime limits and playtime reports for child accounts. A family can have up to six members. Steam Families replaced the earlier Family Sharing and Family View feature set; Steam notes that Family View has been replaced. Exact menu wording may change, so consult the Steam Families User Guide and FAQ if the labels differ.

Request a refund for a purchase you regret
For a game, Steam’s standard refund rule is to request the refund within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of play. To submit a request, sign in to Steam Help, select Purchases, choose the purchase, identify the issue, then select I’d like to request a refund. Steam says you may still submit a request for review if the purchase falls outside the standard rule; approval is not guaranteed. See How To Request A Refund.
