Use machine-readable orbital records to detect changes in a satellite’s published orbit; use screenshots to preserve what a tracking page displayed at a particular time. A screenshot alone cannot establish that an orbit changed. The reliable workflow is to identify candidate objects, save dated records with their provenance, compare compatible records, and capture the relevant page when a visual record is useful.
What screenshots can—and cannot—show
A website screenshot records a rendered page at capture time. It can help document what a catalog or tracking site displayed, including its visible labels and presentation. Orbital records, by contrast, contain the values and epochs needed to analyze changes in a published orbit. Keep the two kinds of evidence together when useful, but do not infer a maneuver from pixels or treat a changed page as proof that an object’s physical orbit changed.

Even a change in published orbital elements is not, by itself, proof of an operator maneuver. It is an observed difference between records. Interpretation depends on the records’ epochs, source freshness, compatibility, and whether the object has been identified correctly.

Choose data sources for the question you need to answer
Before collecting anything, decide whether you are tracking a launch population, monitoring one cataloged object, or preserving a page’s appearance. The sources differ in launch queries, historical access, formats, and access constraints.

| Source | Useful for | Limits and qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| CelesTrak | Catalog lookups by catalog number, international designator, group, or name; its SATCAT page distinguishes catalog, GP, and supplemental GP data freshness. | Its SATCAT page showed 34,930 total objects and 17,140 active satellites in the combined tracked, restricted, or lost categories as of 2026-10-02; it showed 12,664 active satellites with supplemental GP data in the displayed state. These are live counts, not permanent totals. CelesTrak also warns that newly cataloged objects above 99,999 are not available in legacy TLE format. |
| Space-Track.org | GP records and GP_History, which its documentation describes as access to a database containing more than 138 million historical element sets. | A valid user account is required for basic data access. Prefer a supported format that can carry larger catalog identifiers; check current access terms and parser compatibility. |
| NASA Open APIs | A TLE API updated daily from CelesTrak, with name-search and catalog-number endpoints. | Daily updating does not mean every object has a current record at every retrieval. Check the returned record and its epoch. |
| N2YO REST API v1 | Satellite-tracking API requests, including TLE and position-related requests. | N2YO’s page, updated July 2026, publishes limits of 1,000 hourly transactions for TLE, positions, and several other verbs, and 100 for visual passes, radio passes, and “above” requests. Recheck its current limits and usage terms before automation. |
Freshness is not one timestamp. CelesTrak reports separate SATCAT, GP, and supplemental GP data-current times. Save the relevant source update time alongside your own retrieval time and the record’s element-set epoch. That separation helps distinguish a changed orbital record from a page refresh or delayed provider update.
Build a deployment-tracking workflow
1. Define the launch population and expected deployment
When possible, obtain the launch’s pre-launch manifest and expected deployment orbits. Record the coordinate frame, time system, units, and output format used by each source so later comparisons do not mix incompatible conventions. T. S. Kelso’s 2017 paper on identifying newly launched objects emphasizes advance coordination and consistent data definitions.
2. Find the launch’s candidate catalog objects
Query the catalog using a stable identifier. CelesTrak documents queries by catalog number, international designator, group, or name; the international designator is useful for retrieving objects associated with a launch. Keep the resulting candidates grouped at first. A shared launch association is not proof that a particular object is a particular payload.
3. Save successive records with provenance
For every observation, retain the raw response and enough metadata to interpret it later:

Prefer extensible formats such as JSON, XML, CSV, or OMM when available and supported by the provider and your parser. CelesTrak reported that five-digit catalog numbers ran out on 2026-07-11 and warns that newly cataloged objects above 99,999 are unavailable in legacy TLE format. Space-Track recommends formats including JSON, XML, CSV, or OMM that can represent larger identifiers. Check both provider support and your own tooling before choosing a format; a parser that silently truncates or rejects a larger identifier can corrupt the association.
4. Compare compatible records over time
Compare records for the same object and preserve their original values alongside any derived differences. Confirm that the formats and conventions are compatible, and inspect each record’s epoch rather than assuming that two retrievals represent two different orbital states. A refreshed webpage may show the same record, while a newly published record may have an epoch earlier than your retrieval time.
Describe the result precisely: for example, “the published elements differ between records with these epochs,” rather than “the satellite maneuvered,” unless you have independent evidence for a maneuver. Mark an interpretation provisional if the records are missing, delayed, or the object assignment is uncertain.
5. Capture the page as supporting visual evidence
Use a website screenshot API to capture the source page when its displayed state matters to your record. Store the screenshot with the page/source, capture time, and the corresponding machine-readable record or retrieval. Screenshot APIs differ, and the available sources here do not establish a particular vendor’s capture cadence, retention policy, or visual-diff capability. Verify those details in the chosen service’s documentation rather than assuming that repeated captures will be retained or compared automatically.

How to use ScreenshotNeo for the page capture
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-request API can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For this workflow, use it to preserve the page’s appearance; continue to use the provider’s orbital records as the evidence for orbit comparisons. The API’s parameter reference is in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
Keep your API key private. Replace the example target URL with the public source page you want to document, and keep the capture timestamp and source details with the resulting file.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://celestrak.org -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://celestrak.org"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({
access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
url: 'https://celestrak.org'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer())));
The Node.js snippet uses top-level await, so run it in an environment that supports top-level await, such as an ES module. Replace the example URL with the particular page being documented; the example captures the CelesTrak site root, not a specific query result.
Or skip the browser setup
One GET request returns the capture; you do not need to configure a browser for this example:

Deployment timing and attribution: allow for uncertainty
Newly launched objects may not appear in released orbital records immediately, and early records may not identify each payload reliably. In his 2017 paper Challenges Identifying Newly Launched Objects, T. S. Kelso wrote: “It can take days for the JSpOC to start releasing TLEs for a launch involving a large number of objects.” That is a statement from a 2017 paper, not a guaranteed current timeline for every launch.
Because release and attribution can lag, keep early candidates together and label assignments or orbit interpretations provisional until supported by evidence. Do not turn a missing record into a claim that a satellite is absent, inactive, or misidentified.

Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
Plan around data latency, not just capture frequency
A screenshot can only show what the page rendered at capture time. Capturing more often does not make a provider publish orbital data sooner. Store source update times and element epochs so you can recognize repeated or delayed data rather than treating every successful screenshot as a new observation.

Account for identifiers and record compatibility
Legacy fixed-width TLE/3LE formats have limits as catalog identifiers move beyond five digits. Before building a long-running pipeline, confirm that your chosen source provides a suitable format and that your parser preserves the identifier and fields without truncation.
Respect access controls and quotas
Space-Track requires a valid user account for basic data access. N2YO publishes per-hour transaction limits that may change; check current documentation and applicable terms before scheduling automated retrieval or redistributing data. Keep acquisition of orbital records separate from page screenshot capture so each request has a clear purpose and provenance.
Troubleshooting common monitoring problems
- The launch lookup returns several objects. That is a candidate set, not a one-to-one payload mapping. Preserve the group and seek corroboration before assigning individual objects.
- A newly deployed object has no current element record. A delay is possible, especially for a launch with many objects. Record the unsuccessful check and its time, continue monitoring the source, and keep the identification provisional rather than inventing an orbit.
- The page looks updated but orbital values are unchanged. Compare the record epoch and raw values, not just the visible page or its refresh time. Also check the provider’s displayed data-current time.
- Your parser rejects or alters an identifier. Check whether the selected format supports identifiers above 99,999 and verify that the parser is compatible. Prefer an extensible provider format where available.
- Two records appear to show an orbit change. First verify that they refer to the same object, use compatible formats and conventions, and have distinct, understood epochs. Report an element difference unless independent evidence supports calling it a maneuver.
- A screenshot does not show the expected page. Check the requested page URL and the screenshot service’s response status and page-verdict/billing headers where available. A rendered image documents what was captured; it does not replace the source record or prove that a provider’s data were current.
- Automated source requests stop working. Recheck account requirements, current API limits, and usage terms. A quota or access change is different from a change in the satellite’s catalog record.
A practical record format
Keep one observation per retrieved record, with the screenshot linked by filename or storage identifier rather than used as the data record itself. A simple log can include these columns:
Recommended Free Tools
| Field | What to preserve |
|---|---|
| Object identity | Catalog identifier, international designator, and whether the payload attribution is confirmed or provisional. |
| Orbital observation | Source, format, element-set epoch, source data-current timestamp, retrieval timestamp, and raw response. |
| Page evidence | Page/source, screenshot capture timestamp, and image or PDF location. |
| Analysis | Compared record identifiers and epochs, compatibility assumptions, derived comparison, and uncertainty notes. |
This separates what the source published, when it published or updated it, when you retrieved it, and what the page looked like when captured.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot show whether a satellite is transmitting?
A screenshot of a tracking page can show the information that page rendered; it does not by itself establish whether a satellite is transmitting.
How often should I capture a tracking page?
There is no single cadence established for all providers or launch phases. Choose an interval that serves your recordkeeping needs, and interpret each capture alongside the source’s data-current time and the orbital record’s epoch.
