Do not treat the end time, a closed flag, or an old price as proof on its own. Polymarket documents these data surfaces separately; the lifecycle labels below are an engineering model, not an official platform enum.
Which data sources show each part of the lifecycle?
Use each API for the evidence it is designed to provide, and retain the raw values and observation times. Gamma describes markets and their status; CLOB exposes current books and prices. Other layers can provide trading or on-chain context.

The documentation does not provide a universal timing or consistency guarantee between Gamma, CLOB, feeds, and resolution observations. Preserve when and where each signal was observed rather than collapsing them into one timestamp.

A practical internal sequence is discovered → active → approaching_boundary → closed_to_new_orders → awaiting_or_undergoing_resolution → resolved. These are application-defined states, not verified Polymarket labels. Keep the underlying evidence alongside the derived state so delayed or conflicting updates remain visible.

Discovered
Find the market through Gamma and store stable identifiers: market ID, slug, condition identifier, and outcome token identifiers. Retain the relevant status fields and scheduled boundary information supplied for that market.
Active
Use Gamma’s active/closed metadata as a discovery and status signal, then inspect CLOB’s current order book and order-book availability. An active metadata flag is not a substitute for a current book observation.

Approaching the observation boundary
Compare the current time with the market’s scheduled TWAP or observation boundary, using the actual market rules rather than assuming every market has the same window. This state is a warning that the observation period is near; it does not show that new orders have stopped or that resolution has occurred.

Use current order-book and orderability evidence where available, alongside market metadata. A scheduled end time alone is insufficient. If metadata and CLOB disagree, represent the disagreement and refresh the relevant observations instead of silently choosing one as definitive.

Awaiting or undergoing resolution
After order acceptance ends, treat resolution as a separate process. A market may have no active book while its outcome is not yet final. Use the market’s resolution state and relevant settlement evidence; do not infer this state from a stale last price.
Resolved
Mark a market resolved only when the applicable resolution evidence supports that conclusion. Keep the outcome and the source observation with the record, and distinguish confirmed resolution from an inferred or delayed status.

How does the TWAP window affect detection?
The observation boundary depends on the market’s specific rules and duration. A community-posted announcement about crypto up/down markets says their resolution would move from a single snapshot price to TWAP-based resolution and lists these windows:

These figures are claims in a community-posted announcement, not a guarantee for every TWAP market or a substitute for current market rules. The post names Chainlink Data Streams and Polymarket’s public Real-Time Data Streaming WebSocket as ways developers could consume TWAP prices. Verify current feed specifications, market coverage, and access behavior before relying on either feed operationally.

What should you do when signals disagree?
- Keep Gamma metadata, CLOB observations, feed data, and resolution evidence as separate fields with their own observation times.
- Do not convert a scheduled boundary into a closed or resolved state without corroborating evidence.
- Do not use
active,closed, orenableOrderBookas a complete lifecycle verdict in isolation. - Refresh the source relevant to the disagreement and preserve the conflicting values for monitoring or audit.
- Use trade, position, or on-chain records when the application needs evidence beyond current market metadata, while interpreting those records in context.
The Polymarket FAQ is another official reference point, but an implementation should follow the current rules and feed behavior for the specific market it tracks.
