This split matters: server events are authoritative for history, GSI is excellent for presentation but can lose data when requests fail, and Steamworks requires protected credentials and is not a substitute for continuous event capture.

Choose the collection method that matches your goal
There is no single CS2 statistics feed that is ideal for every job. Decide whether you need an authoritative archive, a low-latency display, or a specialized integration before installing anything.

Use a plugin for a community leaderboard
A plugin can subscribe to connect, disconnect, death, damage, round, map, team, weapon and objective events as they happen. Because the server sees the complete match lifecycle, it can reconcile reconnects, identify warmup and competitive rounds, and retain data after a player leaves. This is the right foundation for a web leaderboard, player history page or cross-server ranking.

Use GSI for a live overlay
CS2 can send HTTP POST requests containing JSON to an endpoint specified in a Game State Integration configuration. A consumer can update a stream overlay, spectator panel or operations dashboard within seconds. GSI should not be your only historical source: endpoint downtime, dropped requests, reconnects and payloads that omit a section can leave holes.
Use Steamworks only for a specialized server-stat workflow
Valve documents GetGameServerPlayerStatsForGame for authenticated server submissions. It requires a publisher Web API key, the relevant game and app IDs, and a date range. Valve states that the call must run from a secure server and can never be used directly by clients. Writes are limited to users currently playing, with only a short grace period after departure, so waiting until the end of a round can miss players who disconnect.

Install the CS2 server-side stack
Start with a current CS2 dedicated server and a backup of its configuration. CounterStrikeSharp is a server-side .NET 8 scripting layer built on Metamod:Source; the runtime and its plugins are not client-side mods.
- Back up the server. Copy configuration files, existing plugins and the database connection settings so an update can be rolled back.
- Install Metamod:Source. Copy its files into the CS2 game directory, restart the server, open the server console and run
meta list. A working installation should list Metamod and its loaded components. - Install the matching CounterStrikeSharp runtime. Follow the current CounterStrikeSharp getting-started package for your server build. Its installation requires Metamod:Source and involves copying the supplied
addonsdirectory into the CS2 game directory. - Verify the core plugin. Restart and inspect console output for CounterStrikeSharp load messages before adding a statistics plugin. Fix runtime or version errors first.
- Install a maintained statistics plugin. Place the plugin under
game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/plugins. Choose one that records sessions and raw events rather than only displaying a transient scoreboard. - Set a unique server name and database credentials. The name becomes the server key in a shared leaderboard. Keep the username, password and host in server-side configuration; never put them in a client download or overlay page.
- Restart and perform a controlled test. Join with a test account, play a short round, disconnect and reconnect, then inspect both plugin logs and database rows.
- Add presentation last. Connect a web API, dashboard or GSI overlay only after raw event capture is stable.
Design the database around raw events
Store facts first and derive rates later. This makes definitions auditable and lets you correct a query without rewriting history. A practical schema separates identity, sessions, matches, rounds, events and aggregates.
Identity and name history
Use the player’s Steam ID as the stable key and keep display names in a history table with first-seen and last-seen timestamps. Names change; Steam IDs are the durable identity for joins and leaderboards.
Server, match and round records
Every event should carry a server identifier, map, match or session identifier and round identifier. Record whether the round was warmup or competitive, the teams, start and end times, and completion status. A shared database can then distinguish the same player appearing on several servers.

Event records
At minimum, capture connection and disconnection, map and round transitions, team changes, kills, deaths, assists, damage, weapon, headshot flag, bomb or other objective events, and the warmup/competitive classification. Keep an event timestamp and a deterministic event key so retries do not create duplicate kills or damage.
Session records
Open a session on connect, close it on disconnect, and reconcile a missing disconnect when the server restarts or the player reconnects. Store the session’s server, map or match context and last-seen time. This is the basis for playtime and for excluding idle or abandoned sessions according to your published rules.

Define every metric before publishing it
A number without its denominator is misleading. Publish the filters used for each metric, including whether warmup, bots, abandoned rounds and incomplete matches count.

K/D
Calculate kills divided by deaths. Document the zero-death rule: for example, display “—” when deaths are zero instead of silently dividing by zero, or state that your system uses a defined capped value. Do not mix bot kills with human-player rankings unless that is intentional.
ADR (average damage per round)
ADR is total recorded damage divided by rounds played. State whether rounds with a disconnect, forfeiture or warmup are included. Damage events should be de-duplicated when an event is retried.

Headshot percentage
Use headshot kills divided by total kills. A player with no kills has no meaningful percentage; show “not available” rather than zero unless your interface clearly defines zero as the policy.
Win rate
Choose rounds or matches as the denominator. “Rounds won divided by completed rounds” and “matches won divided by completed matches” answer different questions. Exclude abandoned or unfinished units consistently and label the choice in the UI.
Playtime
Sum active session duration after reconnect and disconnect reconciliation. Decide how to handle spectator time, idle sessions and server restarts. A session that remains open after a crash must be closed using the last heartbeat or server shutdown time, not an arbitrary future timestamp.
Build live stats with Game State Integration
GSI is a push feed: CS2 sends HTTP POST JSON to an endpoint you control. Configure the endpoint on the machine running the game and authenticate requests at your web service. Depending on the configuration, payload sections can include:
mapandroundstate;player_idandplayer_match_stats;player_stateandplayer_weapons;allplayers_*data for a spectator or observer view;bombstate and phase countdowns.
Your receiver should acknowledge quickly, validate the payload, queue processing and return an HTTP success response. Use a timestamp and a monotonic sequence or content hash to reject duplicate deliveries. If historical replay matters, persist the raw JSON before transforming it for the overlay.
Overlay data flow
- CS2 posts a state update to your HTTPS endpoint.
- The endpoint authenticates and validates the request, then stores or queues the payload.
- A worker normalizes player and map fields and publishes the newest state through a WebSocket or polling API.
- The browser-based overlay reads that API and renders names, kills, deaths, weapons, bomb state or countdowns.
GSI is suited to current-state display, not authoritative accounting. Keep the server-plugin event stream as the source for final totals and use GSI to make the presentation responsive.

Share one leaderboard across several servers
Use a globally unique server name or ID and store it on every match and event. Keep a single player identity table keyed by Steam ID, then aggregate by server, map, season or date range. Never use display names as the join key.
When servers have different rules, record the ruleset or plugin configuration with the match. A warmup-heavy deathmatch server should not be ranked beside a competitive server without a visible filter. Scheduled queries or database views can produce daily, weekly and all-time leaderboards from the same raw events.
Secure the installation
- Keep Steam publisher Web API keys, database passwords and signing secrets on the server or a protected backend.
- Do not expose credentials in client-side JavaScript, downloadable configs, logs or public screenshots.
- Restrict database access to the plugin host and dashboard service; use a read-only account for public statistics.
- Validate Steam IDs and event fields before inserting them, and use parameterized queries.
- Retain only the identity and history your community actually needs, and document name-display and deletion policies.
Keep statistics correct after updates
CS2 updates can change event names, schemas or plugin compatibility. SourceMod’s statistics page records an earlier example in which an engine change made CS:GO servers unavailable to its query inclusion. Treat that as a warning not to assume an old statistics plugin will continue working after a game update.
- Pin known-good Metamod:Source, CounterStrikeSharp and plugin versions.
- Monitor startup logs and alert when a plugin fails to load or an expected event count drops.
- After each CS2 update, run a test kill, death, damage event, round transition, map change, connect and disconnect.
- Re-check event names and payload fields before promoting the update to every server.
- Keep raw events so a corrected aggregate query can repair derived statistics without replaying the game.
A live server count is not a quality guarantee; one SourceMod page captured on October 14, 2026 showed 8,966 servers and 27,245 players, but that figure is a time-specific observation rather than a measure of your plugin’s reliability.
Troubleshoot common failures
meta list does not show Metamod
Recheck that the files were copied into the active CS2 game directory, not a parent installation folder. Confirm the server restarted after copying and inspect startup errors before installing CounterStrikeSharp.
CounterStrikeSharp loads but the statistics plugin does not
Verify that the plugin is in game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/plugins, that its build matches the installed runtime and that its dependencies are present. Read the first load error rather than repeatedly restarting.
Players appear twice
Use Steam ID as the identity key and make event insertion idempotent. Reconnects should close or supersede an old session instead of creating a second active session for the same player.
Kills or damage are missing
Check whether the plugin received the relevant event after the latest CS2 update, whether warmup or bot filters removed it, and whether a database write failed. Compare plugin logs with raw event rows before changing metric queries.
GSI overlay freezes
Check endpoint availability, request authentication, response time and queue depth. A receiver that takes too long to respond can cause missed updates. Show the timestamp of the last accepted payload so viewers can distinguish a real in-game pause from a stale overlay.
Steamworks submissions miss disconnected players
This is an API constraint, not necessarily a database bug. Submit while players are active or capture events continuously with the server plugin; do not depend on a single end-of-round write.
Validate before publishing a leaderboard
- Create a test account and record its Steam ID.
- Connect, disconnect, reconnect and change teams; confirm one identity and correctly bounded sessions.
- Complete a round with a known kill, death, assist, damage and headshot; compare raw events with the displayed totals.
- Play a warmup segment and a competitive round; verify your filters.
- Restart the server mid-session and confirm the recovery rule closes the old session.
- Send duplicate GSI payloads and confirm idempotent handling.
- Run aggregate queries with zero deaths, zero kills and incomplete matches to verify that the UI follows your documented denominator rules.
- Test the public dashboard with a read-only database account and confirm that no credentials appear in browser developer tools.
For most community servers, the durable design is straightforward: CounterStrikeSharp captures server events into a protected database, scheduled queries calculate clearly defined metrics, and GSI supplies the low-latency state that a live overlay needs. That separation gives players trustworthy history without sacrificing the responsiveness of a broadcast display.
