In Java Edition, use Create New World → World Type: Superflat → Customize → The Void. That preset creates a small stone platform with the Void beyond it. In Bedrock Edition, the built-in Flat World menu currently offers approximations such as Bottomless Pit, while a genuinely empty Overworld requires a behavior pack whose dimension file sets "generator_type": "void".
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The two editions therefore need different procedures. The Java method is menu-only; the Bedrock method either uses the closest preset or a custom pack with files, activation steps, and a backup plan.

A “void world” can mean two different things: a Superflat map that leaves a platform or other flat layer above emptiness, or a dimension generator that creates no ordinary terrain at all. Your edition determines which option is available.
| Method | Edition | What generates | Starting platform | Setup | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Void Superflat preset | Java | Void beyond the preset’s platform | Small stone platform | Menu only | It is not a completely platform-free spawn |
| Bottomless Pit Flat World preset | Java and Bedrock where listed | Flat-world layers without a bedrock floor | Flat layers remain | Menu only | Not the same as a generator-level empty dimension |
| Void generator behavior pack | Bedrock | No ordinary Overworld terrain in the generated range | None unless you build one | Files plus pack activation | Height bounds and saved chunks require care |
Java players who want a quick challenge should use The Void. Bedrock players who only need to reach empty space can try Bottomless Pit; players who want an actually empty Overworld should use the behavior-pack route.

Create a void world in Minecraft Java Edition
Use the built-in The Void preset
- From the title screen, select Singleplayer, then Create New World.
- Open the world-creation settings and set World Type to Superflat.
- Select Customize.
- Choose the preset named The Void.
- Confirm the settings, select the game mode you want, and create the world.
The Java menu documentation describes this preset as a world with a stone platform and nothing beyond it except the Void. The platform is intentional: it gives you a safe place to spawn instead of dropping immediately into empty space.
Prepare for the first minute
The platform does not provide wood, stone, food, villages, ores, or a naturally generated structure. Decide how you will obtain your first blocks before creating the world. In Creative mode you can begin building immediately. In Survival mode, a normal world-generated supply chain does not exist, so the map is primarily a construction, challenge, or command-testing environment unless you arrange resources through other means.
Keep coordinates visible if you need to return to the platform, mark its edges with blocks, and avoid walking beyond the safe area. A single misplaced step can leave you falling indefinitely. If you are testing redstone, commands, or a build, create the world in Creative first so an accidental fall does not end the experiment.
When Bottomless Pit is the better Java choice
Bottomless Pit is a different Superflat option. It removes the bedrock layer from a flat-world configuration, allowing you to mine downward until you reach the Void. It does not begin as an entirely empty dimension: the configured flat layers still exist above you. Choose it when you want a conventional flat surface with a deliberate route into the Void, or when you need to test what happens after removing the floor.

Choose The Void when the goal is an isolated platform surrounded by emptiness. Choose Bottomless Pit when the goal is a mineable flat map that eventually opens into the Void.
Create an empty world in Minecraft Bedrock Edition
Check the current Flat World presets
- Open Create New World.
- Go to the Advanced tab.
- Enable Flat World.
- Open the preset list and inspect the options available in your installed release.
Mojang’s official article dated May 7, 2025 lists Classic Flat, Tunneler’s Dream, Water World, Overworld, Snowy Kingdom, Bottomless Pit, Desert, and Redstone Ready. That article says the team was still working on a dedicated Void preset, so its absence from your menu is expected in releases that follow that list. Labels and availability can change between Bedrock updates.

Bottomless Pit is the closest built-in choice when you do not want to install files, but it is not an exact Bedrock equivalent of Java’s The Void. It remains a Flat World configuration rather than a generator-level instruction that every block is absent. Select it for a fast, menu-only test or for a flat build that can be opened to the Void. Use a behavior pack for a truly empty Overworld.
Generate a true Bedrock void Overworld with a behavior pack
Microsoft’s documented behavior-pack method replaces the Overworld dimension definition with one whose generation component is set to void. It also lets you define the vertical range that Minecraft treats as the visible, buildable dimension.

1. Close Minecraft and create the pack folder
Close Minecraft before editing pack files. Create a new behavior-pack folder in the normal location used by your Bedrock installation. The folder must contain a standard manifest.json for a behavior pack. That manifest identifies the pack and its modules; use the normal behavior-pack manifest format supported by your installed Bedrock version.
Your initial structure should look like this:
VoidWorldPack/
├── manifest.json
└── dimensions/
└── overworld.json
The folder name is only an organizational label. The manifest is required, and the dimensions directory must sit beside it, not inside another nested pack folder.

2. Add the dimensions directory and Overworld file
Inside the pack, create a folder named dimensions. In that folder, create overworld.json with the following documented definition:
{
"format_version": "1.18.0",
"minecraft:dimension": {
"description": {"identifier": "minecraft:overworld"},
"components": {
"minecraft:dimension_bounds": {"min": -16, "max": 256},
"minecraft:generation": {"generator_type": "void"}
}
}
}
The minecraft:generation component is the part that requests void generation. The minecraft:dimension_bounds component in this example sets a minimum Y value of -16 and a maximum of 256. Those bounds constrain the range you can build in; they are not a promise that terrain exists inside the range.

3. Activate the pack on a new world
- Launch Minecraft after saving the files.
- Choose Create New World.
- Select Behavior Packs and activate your void pack.
- Use Creative mode for the first test.
- Enable coordinates so you can record the spawn location and height.
- Create the world and verify that the Overworld contains no ordinary terrain.
Build a platform before switching to Survival or inviting other players. A void generator does not supply a safe spawn, trees, stone, food, or a floor. If the initial spawn position is inconvenient, use your permitted world-management tools to move to a known coordinate while you are still in Creative.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Optional Nether and End definitions
The same documentation states that the Nether and End support void generation, but they do not support custom height bounds in the same way as the Overworld example. To define one, create a corresponding file such as nether.json or the_end.json, change the dimension identifier to the relevant dimension, and omit the bounds component where required. Test each dimension separately; an Overworld definition does not automatically make the Nether or End empty.
How the two Bedrock approaches compare
| Question | Flat World preset | Behavior-pack void generator |
|---|---|---|
| Is the world generator instructed to produce void? | No; it uses a predefined flat configuration | Yes; "generator_type": "void" |
| Are ordinary resources generated? | Some flat presets contain layers or features | No normal terrain resources are created |
| Is a platform supplied? | Depends on the selected preset | No; you must build or import one |
| Files required? | No | Behavior-pack manifest and dimension JSON |
| Can you set Overworld height bounds? | Only through the preset’s fixed configuration | Yes, with minecraft:dimension_bounds |
| Risk to an existing save? | Low when creating a new world | Pack changes can affect saved and newly generated chunks |
Plan resources and spawning before playing
Void terrain removes the systems that normally make Survival progression possible. There is no ground to catch a fall and no naturally generated source of wood, stone, water, food, or ores. Treat the first platform as infrastructure, not as a complete base.
- Spawn safety: Place a broad, fenced platform under the spawn area and light it if hostile-mob rules matter to your design.
- Navigation: Keep coordinates enabled and record the platform’s location. In a world with no landmarks, coordinates are your map.
- Materials: In Creative, bring the blocks and utilities you need before testing. In Survival, establish a deliberate supply method; the generator will not provide one for you.
- Testing: Use a disposable Creative copy when experimenting with teleportation, filling or clearing blocks, or changing pack files.
- Multiplayer: Tell players that the world has no natural floor. Spawn protection and a shared starting platform prevent avoidable deaths.
Back up before changing a Bedrock world
Make a copy of any Bedrock save before activating, replacing, or removing the behavior pack. Microsoft explains that the pack slices the visible height range, generates unsaved areas as Void, and can leave explored chunks void after the pack is removed. Removing the pack restores the original height range for hidden existing terrain, but newly generated areas may retain their saved void state.

The safest workflow is to create a new test world, confirm that the pack behaves as expected, and only then decide whether to use it on an important save. Keep the original world untouched so you can return to it if the dimension definition, bounds, or manifest is wrong.

Troubleshoot common problems
The Void does not appear in Java
- Confirm that World Type is Superflat, not a regular world.
- Open Customize; the preset is selected there rather than in the ordinary terrain settings.
- If your release uses different labels, look for the Superflat preset that explicitly says The Void.
Bedrock has no Void preset
This is not necessarily an installation error. The May 7, 2025 official preset list did not present a dedicated Void option and described that feature as still in development. Use Bottomless Pit for a built-in approximation or install the documented behavior pack.
The behavior pack is not listed
- Check that
manifest.jsonis directly inside the pack folder. - Check that
dimensions/overworld.jsonis spelled and nested exactly as shown. - Make sure the JSON uses straight quotation marks and contains no trailing commas.
- Reopen Minecraft after editing files, then activate the pack from the world’s Behavior Packs screen.
- Test on a new Creative world before touching a valued save.
The world still contains terrain
Verify that the pack is active on the world you are testing and that the dimension identifier is exactly minecraft:overworld. Existing chunks may retain previously generated terrain; inspect newly generated areas in a fresh test world to determine whether the generator definition is working.
The spawn point is unsafe
A generator-level void world does not promise a platform. Enable coordinates, enter Creative mode for setup, and build a platform at a known height before attempting Survival play. If you fall, return to the saved copy or recreate the test world rather than modifying an important save blindly.
Which option should you use?
- Use Java’s The Void for the quickest platform-in-the-Void map.
- Use Bottomless Pit when you want a menu-only flat world that can be mined down into emptiness.
- Use the Bedrock behavior pack when “empty world” means no ordinary Overworld terrain and you are comfortable managing pack files and backups.
In every case, plan the spawn platform and resource supply first. The defining feature of a void world is also its main difficulty: there is nothing beneath or around you unless you deliberately add it.
