How to Track Local Rainfall and Flood Alerts on Your Phone

Combine critical phone alerts with USGS water observations and NWS radar and forecasts. Learn what each tool does—and why a gauge notification is not a safety guarantee.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For U.S. readers, the most reliable phone setup combines Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) for critical government warnings, the USGS National Water Dashboard for nearby water and rainfall observations, and National Weather Service (NWS) pages for radar, forecasts, and official alerts. You can add a WaterAlert threshold notification if a nearby station measures something useful. These tools serve different purposes; a gauge or map is not a personal safety guarantee.

Set up more than one source of information

Start with the no-signup emergency channel, then add local monitoring and forecast tools. Availability and phone interfaces can change, so use each service’s current page and settings.

  1. Keep Wireless Emergency Alerts enabled. WEA sends government-authorized critical alerts to compatible phones through participating wireless carriers. It does not require an app or subscription, but it is intended for specially designated critical alerts—not every watch, advisory, or rainfall reading. Treat it as one layer, not your complete weather service. NOAA: Wireless Emergency Alerts.
  2. Find nearby monitoring stations. Open the USGS National Water Dashboard on your phone and look for active sites near home, work, or places you regularly visit. The map brings together USGS water observations with NWS radar, watches and warnings, and rainfall information. A USGS announcement dated October 30, 2020, described data from more than 13,500 observation stations; that is a historical figure, not a current live station count. USGS announcement.
  3. Subscribe to WaterAlert if a useful station is available. From a station, choose an offered measurement and set a threshold for email or phone notification. The sensors and measurements vary by site, so first check that the station tracks something relevant to your concern. Rainfall totals and local conditions affect what threshold is useful; you may need to adjust it. USGS WaterAlert and USGS WaterAlert information.
  4. Make NWS Radar easy to open. Visit NWS Radar and use the location view for radar, current weather, alerts, and forecasts. The service says the location page can be bookmarked and saved as an easy-access icon on mobile devices. This is a convenient way to check changing conditions without relying only on push notifications. NWS Radar guidance.
  5. Optionally add FEMA app alerts for saved locations. FEMA’s app listing describes NWS/IPAWS alerts for up to five selected locations at ZIP-code precision. Install the app and configure the locations you want covered; verify the current listing and in-app settings because features may change. FEMA mobile products.

Tool Best use What to know
Wireless Emergency Alerts Critical government-authorized emergency alerts No app signup is needed on compatible phones using participating carriers. Not every weather product or rainfall observation is sent as a WEA. NOAA WEA.
USGS National Water Dashboard Viewing nearby water observations alongside weather layers Coverage depends on active monitoring sites; the 2020 announcement’s station count is historical, not a live total. Dashboard.
USGS WaterAlert Notifications when a selected station measurement crosses a chosen threshold Requires a suitable sensor, selected measurement, and threshold. Update timing varies with the station and data receipt interval; alerts may not arrive in time for an emergency. WaterAlert.
NWS Radar Checking radar, local conditions, forecasts, and official alerts Can be bookmarked or saved as a mobile shortcut; it is a page to check, not a substitute for emergency notifications. NWS Radar.
FEMA app Alerts for selected additional locations The app listing describes up to five locations at ZIP-code precision; confirm current features and settings. FEMA mobile products.

Understand what a gauge alert can—and cannot—tell you

A WaterAlert message depends on a particular station, its sensor, and when new data reaches the service. USGS says incoming data often arrives hourly and may be more frequent during floods; it also cautions that notifications might not reach users in time during an emergency. A nearby gauge can provide useful context, but distance, local terrain, drainage, and conditions between the station and your location mean its reading cannot establish that your home or route is safe. Use the Dashboard to inspect observations, and check NWS radar and forecast products for developing weather. For official emergency information, keep WEA enabled and follow local officials’ instructions. NOAA recommends using more than one weather information source; NOAA Weather Radio is an optional additional source of official NWS warnings, watches, forecasts, and hazard information, not a requirement for phone tracking. Act on warnings, not just rainfall totals

An NWS warning means hazardous impacts are expected or occurring. In particular, NOAA says a Flash Flood Warning means dangerous flash flooding is expected: move to higher ground, heed local officials, and never walk or drive through floodwater. Do not wait for a local gauge to cross a threshold before acting on an official warning. NWS flood safety and NOAA storm safety.

  • If a warning affects your area, follow instructions from local emergency officials and move to higher ground when threatened.
  • Do not walk, swim, or drive through floodwater.
  • Use WEA, current NWS alerts, and local instructions for urgent decisions; treat automated station notifications as supplemental information.

If you are outside the United States
